Emerson College

OHRL Student Staff

Resident Assistant (RA)

The RA is an upper-class student who reports to the Residence Director and works closely with the residents on a given floor(s) and throughout the building. He/she has direct responsibility for working with residents on a floor(s) or section of the residence hall.

Your RA will be able to explain College policy and regulations, refer you to College services and offices, react to emergency situations, advise you, sponsor programs and act as a general source of support.

Your RA is your first contact for concerns; do not hesitate to contact your RA when you are in need of any kind of assistance. If the RA does not have the answer, you will be referred to an appropriate source.

Your RA will hold a floor meeting during orientation week and regular meetings thereafter. At your first floor meeting, you will meet your neighbors and have the opportunity to make decisions regarding some of the rules of your living unit.

Resident Assistants are selected in the Spring for the following academic year. Qualifications considered in the selection process include social, academic and financial standing at the College, maturity, ability to relate well to people, responsibility, initiative, assertiveness and time availability.

Applicants must be full-time Emerson students enrolled in a degree granting program.

Current Emerson students interested in applying for an RA position should talk to either their RA or Residence Director, or stop by the Office of Housing and Residence Life for more information.

Desk Receptionists

The Desk Receptionists are responsible for monitoring and enforcing hall security. They screen and log in visitors and collect and distribute IDs of guests signing in and out of the hall. They also loan out hall equipment and take messages for residents.

They have a difficult and responsible job; please be considerate of and cooperate with them. Because it is not possible for all Desk Receptionists to know all residents, all residents must show their IDs to the Desk Receptionist each time they enter the hall.

While it is understood that this responsibility may cause some level of inconvenience to residents, that inconvenience is far outweighed by the added security this precaution provides to the community.

Desk Receptionists are directed and supervised by the Residence Director (RD). If you are interested in one of these positions, contact your RD or leave your name, telephone number and whether you qualify for work-study employment at the residence-hall staff office.
