Get Involved

Once you arrive, we encourage you to get involved so you start to feel engaged in the campus community and begin to create a positive college experience. With a number of organizations on campus, Emerson College offers you a variety of ways to get involved in campus life: 

Feeling Homesick?

Moving away from home and adjusting to life on campus, roommates, new classes, and a new routine takes time. If you are feeling a little homesick, here are a few tips on settling in at Emerson:

  • Get involved: Social groups and events are a core part of your college experience. Stop by Student Life or ask your Resident Assistant (RA) about activities on campus. You can also try attending a sporting event, concert, or campus-sponsored program.
  • Do something you enjoy: Almost everyone has a favorite hobby, sport, or pastime. Go on a morning run, read a good book, add some pages to your scrapbook, paint, or shoot some hoops. Doing something you enjoy will add some happiness to your day and take your mind off of thinking of home. If you don't think you have a hobby, college is a perfect place to try something new and discover what you like and what you're good at.
  • Get organized: Take some time to keep track of what's going on every day. A planner, notebook, or pad of sticky notes can help you remember important stuff such as homework due dates, assignments, weekend plans, and campus events.
  • Go out with a friend: Boston has so many interesting places to visit, restaurants to eat at, and events to attend. Try a new coffee shop, visit a museum or historic landmark, or catch a concert with a friend.
  • Keep in touch with your family: Keeping in touch with your parents/guardians or siblings will help the whole family adjust to your move to college. However, remember to make new friends in an attempt to make college your “new home.”
  • Write in a journal or diary: Try writing in a journal or diary the next time you are feeling down. Just write down what's on your mind and express some of your worries and fears. Over time, you can reflect on what you wrote and see how far you've come.
  • Volunteer: Forget about your problems by serving others. Visit the Office of Service Learning and Community Action to find out more about volunteering.
  • Set goals: A little homesickness is normal as you adjust to your new school and surroundings, but you can't let it dampen your spirit. Now is a good time to remember your dreams and think about how much you can accomplish with a little effort and hard work. Write down what you want to accomplish and commit yourself to working toward your goals. Your attitude and confidence will improve as you progress.
