Connecting to the Emerson Network

This page will assist you in configuring your computer to function on Emerson's high-speed network. Follow the instructions below to get started.

Apple Logo Connecting your Mac computer:

Minimum Requirements:
  • The Macintosh Operating System version 7.5.3 or higher with Open Transport. OS X+ recommended.
  • An Ethernet Card. Most Mac computers have a card pre-installed.
  • An Ethernet Cable. (Also known as CAT-5 cable. Not to be confused with a phone cable.)
  • A valid ECnet account (Obtainable from the Help Desk with valid Emerson College ID)
Instructions (For Macintosh OS X):
  1. Connect your computer to the purple wall jack with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Open the System Preferences under the Apple Menu
  3. Open the Network Preference Pane
  4. Set Show to Built-In Ethernet.
  5. Click the TCP/IP tab.
  6. Set Configure to Using DHCP Server.
  7. Click the Apply button and quit System Preferences
  8. Open a browser such as Safari or Firefox. You should automatically be directed to http://netreg.student.emerson.edu/. You will register your computer on the network by following the instructions.
  9. All computers must be registered before network access will be granted.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Windows 95 or higher (98, ME, 2000, XP, NT4, etc.)
  • An Ethernet Card.
  • An Ethernet Cable. (Also known as CAT-5 cable. Not to be confused with a phone cable.)
  • A valid ECnet account (Obtainable from the Help Desk with valid Emerson College ID)
Instructions (For Windows XP):
  1. Connect your computer to the purple wall jack with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Go to the Start Menu and select Control Panel.
  3. If necessary, switch to classic view and then click on the Network Tasks on the left.
  4. Follow the instructions provided by the New Connection Wizard:
    • Network Connection Type: Connect to the Internet
    • Getting Ready: Set up my connection manually
    • Internet Connection: Connect using a broadband connection that is always on
    • Click Finish to close the Wizard
  5. Open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. You should automatically be directed to http://netreg.student.emerson.edu/. You will register your computer on the network by following the instructions.
  6. All computers must be registered before network access will be granted.
NOTE: The registration process runs a simple system security check before allowing you to register your computer. You may need to install certain Microsoft Updates in order to protect your computer on the network. These install programs are created by Microsoft and will be available to you via the NetReg website.
