General information

What is eCommon?

eCommon is a new and evolving portal through which Emerson will be providing simplified sign-on access to role-based information and resources to the Emerson community. For example, students will use eCommon to access registration, student services, campus communications and announcements and group communication. Faculty and staff will use eCommon to access campus and group communications as well as links to teaching and job-related tasks.

eCommon, launched in its first phase in September 2009, will continue to evolve as the community develops a clear understanding of the many ways this tool can contribute to the communication and access needs of the College.

I need an ECnet account. How can I get one?

Just bring your Emerson ID (student, staff, or faculty) and yourself to the IT Help Desk, located on the 4th floor of 120 Boylston Street (the Walker Building). We have recently updated our system! Now, you just have to fill out a short computer-based application and show a photo ID. You'll have a working ECnet account within a business day! However, if you are an incoming student, your account information and temporary password will be mailed to your home address with other Emerson paperwork.

What do I do if I forget my password?

Come to the Help Desk, just like you would for a new ECnet account. You'll fill out the same computer-based form, but this time you'll check "Password Change" instead of "New Account." Password changes typically take less time than account creations, but to be on the safe side, make sure to place your request as soon as you can.

What do I do if my account has been disabled?

Accounts are automatically disabled as a security measure when access to an account has been attempted unsuccessfully several times in a row. This may also happen if one hasn't waited a few minutes after a password has been changed. An account will be re-enabled automatically with time or you may call or visit  the Help Desk to have your account re-enabled.

Security

Is the portal secured to transfer sensitive personal information?

Yes.  eCommon uses “SSL encryption.” This means the connection between your web browser and the server is encrypted.

Is there a timeout period?

Yes. After 30 minutes of inactivity within eCommon, you will be asked if you want to continue your session. If you don't answer this question, you will automatically be logged off the system to protect your account. Always log off eCommon as soon as you are finished or when you need to leave the computer, especially public work stations.
