Human Research Subjects / Faculty Research

The mission of the Emerson College Human Research Subjects Committee is to assure quality research involving human subjects conducted under the auspices of the College. The Committee is guided by ethical principles outlined in the Belmont Report (1979) and legal mandates outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 45 Part 46 (1994). The main purpose of the Committee is to ensure the protection of human subjects through the review, approval, modification, or disapproval of research applications submitted by faculty, staff, or students. The Committee is responsible for communication, record keeping, reporting, monitoring, education of the campus community about ethical issues, and the overseeing of all research activity involving human subjects.

IRB submissions for the November meeting are due on Friday, November 13, 2009, by 5pm, to Donna_Schroth@emerson.edu. Further dates for submission will be posted in the future.

Training Module

Due to Federal Regulations, students, faculty and researchers must obtain a certificate from a tutorial regarding research with human subjects. This may be obtained at the following website:

  • Go to Educational Resources/QI
  • Select “Online Training” for Human Subject Assurance Training
  • Login
  • Select “Investigator Responsibilities and Informed Consent”
  • Complete this section and print your certification of Human Subject Assurance online training, Module 2. (Retain a copy for your files)

The OHRP recommends that students, faculty, and researchers read The Belmont Report.
