Student Health Insurance
The college is required by law to provide health insurance for all students enrolled at least 75% of full time. Matriculated undergraduates enrolled for less than 12 credits and part-time degree students enrolled for less than 9, who desire health insurance, must submit a written request for coverage, with payment to Student Financial Services, located at 80 Boylston St., 1st floor. Matriculated graduates enrolled for less than 8 credits are not automatically billed for insurance and must submit a written request for coverage, with payment to Student Financial Services.
Coverage is effective September 1 through August 31 of the current academic year and is provided under a blanket policy issued to Emerson College. For new Spring semester students, coverage will become effective on January 12 of the current academic year. The policy is underwritten by Aetna Insurance Company, and is administered by The Aetna Student Health group. For complete details on the policy, please visit http://www.chickering.com/schools/emerson.
Undergraduate students and Graduate students may waive the Health Insurance Fee upon submission of written proof of comparable coverage by the designated deadline date. Waivers are available online beginning the first week of July. If you have trouble accessing the waiver, contact the Student Service Center at 617-824-8655. An insurance waiver must be completed at the start of each academic year. You can see if insurance has been waived by checking your account online at www.emerson.edu/payment.

Insurance regulations for students who experience a loss of coverage mid-year:
Massachusetts state law requires any student participating in at least 75% of the full-time curriculum to have continuous medical insurance. Based on this law, Emerson is responsible for insuring their students have continuous medical coverage. If a student is eligible for an insurance waiver at the beginning of an academic year, then subsequently loses coverage prior to the start of the spring semester, the student is responsible to pay for a full year insurance plan. Unfortunately there is no pro-rated premium available for students when coverage begins during the middle of the policy year.
International Undergraduate Students
Massachusetts regulation does not consider coverage by insurance carriers outside of the U.S. and coverage by foreign national health service programs as comparable under a qualifying student health insurance program.
Massachusetts "Health Care Reform Law"
On April 12, 2006 the"Health Care Reform Law" as it is known became effective. It is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' goal to reduce the number of residents without health insurance and improve the cost and quality of health care provided in the state. The new law requires all Massachusetts residents (18 and older) to be enrolled in an insurance program effective July 1, 2007. These FAQ provide clarification of the requirements as they apply to Emerson College students.
