Zauft's role redefined to include leadership of Graduate Studies
by Carrie Sheffield The position of associate vice president for Academic Affairs will be redefined to include the responsibilities of advancing the graduate studies department, Vice President of Academic Affairs Linda Moore announced recently.
"Several events over the past few years have signaled that the times necessitate decanal leadership, especially with the arrival of our new MFA degree in the Department of Visual and Media Arts, and the successful grant activities of some of our faculty," says Moore. Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Richard Zauft will take on the role of dean of Graduate Studies, but will continue in the role of associate vice president.
"Richard's portfolio has changed over the years," says Moore. "He has gotten in place many of the initiatives he was initially charged with and is capable of taking on new responsibilities."
Zauft came to Emerson in 2004 from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he was a professor of visual art. Co-editor of Hamilton Wood Type, A History in Headlines (Blinc Publishers, 2004), and designer and publisher of Threatening Heaven (Innerer Klang Press, 2004). Zauft is also president of the Society of Printers in Boston, and vice president for membership for the College Book Art Association. He has exhibited his work and conducted workshops and visiting artist lectures on fine printing and wood type at institutions and conferences. He is a two-time project grant recipient from the National Endowment for the Arts, and holds an MFA degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Zauft says of his new additional role, "I hope to strengthen all 10 degree programs, work closely with all the program directors to develop an assessment plan and program review and prioritize a number of initiatives in graduate studies."
