Semel Theater, February 22-24

A Movie Star has to Star in Black and White by Adrienne Kennedy, “….probably the boldest artist now writing for the theater….” will grace Emerson Stage this season.  Clara, a young African American woman writer in the late 1950’s, whose story unfolds through scenes from popular movies, faces the horrors and the cosmic visions of disparate constructions.  The play speaks images that shape and reveal the cores of the young woman's lives. It explores and creates encounters with identity, yearnings, and the essence of survival. Grounded in enchanting language and cultural authenticity the play reflects definitions of both vintage movies and surreal theater.

Robbie McCauley originated the role of Clara. She is thrilled to resume her long term relationship to Adrienne Kennedy’s plays.
