Tyler Kinney Polishes His Skills as A Scenic Designer
Tyler Kinney talks about his hands-on experiences in the Theatre Design/Technology program — from designing costumes for Into the Woods to dreaming up the set for Bud, Not Buddy. (Filmed and edited by Emerson students.)
Q. Why did you choose Emerson?
I chose Emerson for the hands-on experience of designing and creating theatre. Also, Emerson's passionate and accepting community was the ultimate factor in my decision.
Q. What do you love about your field/major?
What I love about Theatre Design is the collaboration. I get to be part of an organic process that challenges and enriches me at the same time.
Q. What do you like about Emerson?
The facilities! I love having shared spaces that encourage collaboration and efficiency. From the costume shop to the Cutler Majestic Theatre, I am working in professional, top-of-the-line facilities that will prepare me for Broadway and beyond.
Q. How does the Emerson community help you thrive as a student?
There are an immense amount of opportunities to apply your skills. Clubs, organizations, and projects for credit all give us a chance to find out where our passion lies.
Q. Describe a typical day or week.
A typical week can consist of core and major-specific classes. In addition, there are usually production meetings for shows (Emerson Stage and extra-curricular). I also spend a lot of time in the library, studio, and shops (costume and scenic).
Q. How have Emerson faculty helped you?
The faculty are extremely accessible. When I have a question, they're never more than a knock or an email away. My advisors have trained me and helped me to obtain work outside Emerson.
Q. How have you changed personally between your first day at Emerson and now?
I have learned to take responsibility for running the business that is me. I am in control of how I market myself and plan for a successful career.
Q. What do you hope to do with your Emerson degree?
I plan on taking my degree all over the world to work with exciting artists.
Q. What advice would you give to an incoming Emerson student?
Find mentors and people who interest you. Reach out and take initiative on projects. I promise you: it will pay off!
