Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders Banner

Welcome from the Chair

Daniel Kempler, Chair of Communication DisordersCommunication disorders affect the academic, social and career achievements of twenty million Americans.  Fortunately, many communication disorders can be prevented and treated; communication abilities can be regained and developed.  But there is a growing need for teachers, speech pathologists, and researchers.

The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at Emerson prepares students in the clinical field of speech-language pathology.  At the undergraduate level, our program also prepares students for study and careers in allied fields, including linguistics, education, occupational and physical therapy, medicine, hospital administration, law, and aspects of marketing (such as health-care marketing).  At the graduate level, our program prepares students for certification and licensure as a speech-language pathologist.

Emerson College is a leader in the field of communication sciences, fortunately situated in Boston, a city with tremendous academic and clinical resources.  Through this environment, our students receive a unique and stimulating educational experience.  Our nationally recognized faculty provides coursework in the basic science of communication disorders and rehabilitation.  At every phase of the program, traditional coursework is paralleled by "hands-on" clinical education, where students observe and assist in treating patients, both in our own facilities, and at hospitals and clinics throughout the region.

Whether you are looking to begin or continue a career in communication disorders, become a teacher, clinician or researcher, we invite you to take a closer look at our exciting undergraduate and graduate programs.  If you are an alum of the department or a community member concerned about a family member, please contact us for more information and to learn about some of our latest developments.
