Prior to joining Emerson College, Julie E. Volkman spent more than five years applying and researching health communication efforts. She has concentrated on an ecological view of health message design across a variety of contexts. Currently, her research focuses on the use of narrative evidence in health messages to promote osteoporosis prevention behaviors for young women ages 18–25. In addition to her academic research, her experiences also involve working in both the private and public sectors, including media and government relations for medical device companies, as well as working at the federal level with the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Health and Human Services. She has published in the Journal of Health Psychology, Health Policy, Health Marketing Quarterly, and Social Science & Medicine, and has publications in-press at the Journal of Health Communication and Health Communication. She has also presented her research at the regional, national, and international levels.
