Preparation


Apply to Graduate

All students who plan to graduate must file an application which must be processed by the Registrar’s Office. Instructions and forms will be posted on the Registrar's Apply to Graduate webpage. Note: You must be approved by the Registrar's Office before you can pick up your tickets.


Attending Commencement

All students, including students who graduate December 30, 2015, will need to let us know if they will be participating in the 2016 Commencement Ceremony. Sign in to eCommon and click the commencement self-service tab for instructions.

Important dates

  • Deadline to submit your intent online: April 20 th
  • Deadline for summer graduates to register and pay for remaining credits: April 20th

Students completing their degrees at the end of the summer 2016 term

Only students who have registered and paid for their remaining credits by April 20th will be approved to participate in commencement. You will be notified via email from the Registrar’s Office about the status of your request.

Pick Up Tickets

Undergraduate students

May receive up to six (6) guest tickets to the commencement ceremony. The graduating student does not need a guest ticket if they are participating in the ceremony.

Graduate students

May receive up to ten (10) guest tickets to the commencement ceremony. The graduating student does not need a guest ticket if they are participating in the ceremony.

You must pick up your guest tickets in person and provide proper identification (photo ID). Guest tickets will not be mailed under any circumstances. Tickets also cannot be picked up at the door.

Pick-up Location/Times

Tickets must be picked up on campus by the graduating student with an ID. We will distribute Commencement ticket starting April 25th from the Campus Center Information Booth, 150 Boylston Street. Ticket Hours are:

· Tuesday, 5/3: 10:00am-7pm

· Wednesday, 5/4: 10:00am-5pm

· Thursday, 5/5: 10:00am-7pm

· Friday, 5/6: 10:00am-5pm

· Saturday 5/7: 10:00am-4pm

Purchase Cap and Gown

Caps and gowns may be purchased at the Emerson College Bookstore 617-824-8696 beginning April 2016.

Commencement FAQs

When: Sunday May 8th, 2016

Where: Agganis Arena at Boston University, 925 Commonwealth Ave.

Time: Undergraduate ceremony 10am-1pm, reception follows in adjacent building. Doors open to guests at 9 am.

Graduate ceremony 3pm-4:30pm, reception follows in adjacent building. Doors open to guests at 2 pm.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

You need to a) apply to graduate and then b) confirm that you will be participating in Commencement via eCommon.

Approximately one week after you apply to graduate, on eCommon under Student Services you should see a Commencement box with a link called Participating in the 2016 Commencement? Click here! If you do not see it, please email the Registrar and let them know you will be participating.

Tickets

Q. How many tickets do I get?

A: Seating at the Agganis allows for 6 tickets per undergraduate student, and 10 tickets per graduate student. If you require more, please ask your peers if they have tickets they will not be using. Tickets are general admission, so your guests will still be able to sit together.

Undergraduates may also offer or ask for tickets on the Emerson College Class of 2016 Official Group Facebook page. Please support your peers!

Q. How much do tickets cost?

A: There is no charge for tickets.

Q. Where do I pick up tickets?

A: Tickets must be picked up on campus by the graduating student with an ID. We will distribute Commencement ticket starting April 25th from the Campus Center Box Office. Hours will be set once staffing has been confirmed. They will include one Saturday on May 7th and some evening hours during the week.

A: We are not able to mail tickets. Tickets must be picked up in person by the student.

Q. What happens if I lose my tickets?

A: If you lose your tickets your guests will not be able to attend. Please, DO NOT LOSE YOUR TICKETS!

Cap & Gown(Required for the graduation ceremony)

Q: How do I order my cap & gown?

A: You may purchase your cap, gown, tassel, and pin (undergraduates) or cap, gown, tassel, and hood (graduates) either at the Emerson Bookstore, or online. The order form will be on the bookstore website on April 4, 2016.

Q. When may I pick up my cap and gown?

A: As of 2016 you may choose to have your cap and gown mailed to your home address, or you may pick them up at the Emerson Bookstore in late April. An email will be sent to graduating students when they are ready for pick up.

Q. I’m in LA, studying abroad, or no longer on campus, how do I get my cap and gown?

A: As of 2016 you may choose to have your cap and gown mailed to your home address, otherwise you may pick them up at the Emerson Bookstore in late April. An email will be sent to graduating students when they are ready for pick up.

Q. What color are the cap and gown?

A: The cap and gown are black, the tassel is purple and gold. Graduate student hoods vary by degree and are white for MA, gold for MS, and rust brown for MFA.

Q. My gown is wrinkled, what do I do?

A: DO NOT IRON IT, it will melt! Simply hang it up overnight.

Q. What should I wear under my gown?

A: Semi-formal is nice, but not required. You will be standing for a very long time and the walk into the arena is long and filled with stairs. Please DON'T WEAR HEELS or FLIP FLOPS, you will thank yourself for it later.

Getting to Commencement

Q. How do I get to the Agganis Arena?

A: Buses for graduating students and staff will be running between the Little Building and the Agganis Arena from 7am to 6pm on commencement day.

Q. What about my guests?

A: Family and friends must arrange for their own transportation. Agganis Arena is on the Green Line - B branch, the closest stop is St. Paul Street.

Q. What about parking?

A: There is a parking lot under the arena where guests may pay to park ($15). There is also on-street parking and other parking lots in the area.

Day of Commencement for Graduating Students

Q. I don't want to use the buses, can I go there myself?

A: Yes, Agganis Arena is on the Green Line - B branch, the closest stop is St. Paul Street.

Q. What entrance to the Agganis should I use?

A: Graduating students should use the Feld Public Skating Center entrance located off of Harry Agganis Way.

Q. What time do I need to be there?

A: Undergraduate students need to be at the Arena by 8:00am.

A: Graduate students need to be at the Arena by 1:30pm.

Q. What happens after I arrive?

A: Once you arrive you will be lined up by school, department, and in alphabetical order for Commencement. (If you are a double-major the Registrar will determine which department you walk with.) You will be standing for a very long time and the walk into the arena is long and filled with stairs. Please DON'T WEAR HEELS or FLIP FLOPS, you will thank yourself for it later.

Q. Should I be wearing my cap & gown when I arrive?

A: Please bring your cap and gown—without them you cannot participate in the ceremony—but do not wear your gown until you have passed through Security at the Agganis Arena.

Q. What about bags and coats?

A: The only bag you should have is for your wallet and phone—one that fits under your gown. Backpacks and laptops will not be allowed into the Arena. It should be warm enough by then that you won’t require a coat!

Q. Where will I be sitting?

A: You will be sitting in chairs located on the floor of the arena.

Q. Where will my guests be sitting?

A: They will be in the arena seats with a great view.

Day of Commencement for Guests

Q. What entrance should my guests use?

A: They should use the main entrance to the arena on Commonwealth Avenue.

Special Accommodation

Q: One of my guests needs special arrangements, what should we do?

A: There is no need to provide any information in advance. There will be a drop-off area on Commonwealth Ave. in front of the Agganis Arena, and a Special Accommodations table in the lobby where the Agganis staff will assist your party. There will be wheelchairs and assisted hearing devices available, and the Arena meets and in many cases exceeds all Massachusetts State Accessibility and Federal ADA requirements. If you wish you may arrive up to half an hour early (at 8:30am for the undergraduate ceremony, and 1:30pm for the graduate ceremony) to allow for a more leisurely process.

Q: Are bags allowed in the arena?

A: Guest’s bags will be searched and must be smaller than 12 in x 12 in x 6in (30cm x 30cm x 15cm). It is better not to bring a bag.

Q: Will you really be collecting tickets?

A: Yes! The Agganis staff will be making sure that everyone has a ticket so DON'T LOSE YOUR TICKETS because your guests will not be able to attend.

The Ceremony Itself

Q: How long is the ceremony?

A: The undergraduate ceremony will be approximately 3 hours.

A: The graduate ceremony will be approximately 1-1/2 hours.

Q: Who is going to be speaking?

A: We don't have that information yet but we will let you know as soon as we know.

Reception

Q: Is there a reception after the ceremony?

A: Yes! There will be a reception immediately following the ceremony in the FitRec Center at BU (next door to the Agganis Arena). More information about the reception will be shared as it becomes available.

Q: How will I find my guests?

A: You should have a plan for where to meet your guests after the ceremony and before the reception.

Accommodations for Guests

Q: My guests are coming from out of town. Where should they stay?

A: Emerson has no special arrangements with hotels. We recommend that guests book hotels or B&Bs well in advance as there are many graduation ceremonies in Boston in May.

Remember, DON'T LOSE YOUR TICKETS. If you lose your tickets, you can't get new ones!
