Reading Groups

The CITL periodically hosts a reading group to discuss a recent book on teaching and learning in higher education. Participants receive a free copy of the selection. View our calendar for current reading group information.

Collaborative Events

Course Design Spa

The Course Design Spa is sponsored by the Iwasaki Library, The Instructional Technology Group, and the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning. Offered in August before the start of classes, and open to all faculty, the day is designated to designing, re-designing, or perfecting courses. Expert guidance, information, and support about the various aspects of course design are provided by consultants from several units across campus. Coffee and lunch are provided. The Course Design Spa is a free, space-limited opportunity. Invitations to sign-up are sent to all faculty via email.

Faculty Writers’ Retreat

Twice a year during semester breaks, the CITL and the Iwasaki Library arrange two days of designated time for faculty to work on writing projects. Time can be used to work independently or with a fellow participant. Consultations can be scheduled with experts from the Iwasaki Library, the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship, the Lacerte Family Writing and Academic Resource Center, and with the CITL about any of the following:

  • Grant or fellowship application writing
  • Formatting a manuscript
  • Outlining or organizing writing projects
  • Managing citations and/or sources
  • Researching information and/or reviewing literature
  • Brainstorming scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) projects

The Faculty Writers’ Retreats are free and lunch is provided. Invitations to sign up for these space-limited opportunities are sent via email to all faculty.

Information Literacy Collaborative

The information Literacy Collaborative (ILC) is an annual professional development opportunity for faculty who wish to enhance their courses so their students will be skilled and informed inquirers in the discipline. For three days in May and one half day at the end of Fall semester, 16 faculty work on perfecting their learning goals for information research, their research assignments, and their teaching for student learning. Each year in late spring, invitations to apply to participate in the ILC are sent via email. Besides enhancing their courses, faculty are expected to share their experience with fellow departmental faculty in order to receive a stipend for successful completion of the ILC. The CITL and the Iwasaki Library have been co-sponsoring the ILC since 2008.

Internal and External Funding for Faculty Research

The CITL collaborates with the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship (ORCS) on projects that fund faculty research. Through co-sponsored workshops and other professional development opportunities, the CITL supports proposal preparation. In addition, the CITL supports evaluation of student learning during post award grant-related activities. The ORCS is the primary resource for faculty seeking internal and external funding.
