Program Description

Media Production catalogThe Media Production Certificate Program offers participants a theoretical and practical introduction to media with an emphasis on training in multiple media. The core curriculum exposes participants to the basic history, theory, and practice of the media arts. Through the curriculum, individuals are given the opportunity to develop hands-on production skills, achieve aesthetic and technical proficiency, and make sophisticated choices in the creation of media art. Participants also gain proficiency in film, video, audio, and new media production on a digital platform, progress to further study in either film or television/video, and gain insight into the various media industries.

WHO SHOULD ENROLL

The Media Production Certificate Program is intended for individuals who would like to gain knowledge and training through non-credit multi-media courses, hands-on labs and workshops. The Media Certificate Program is ideal for participants seeking to build media production skills, which participants will showcase through a final capstone website of their work finished in the program.


CERTIFICATE PROGRAM COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

The following guidelines apply to all non-credit, non-degree individuals seeking to earn the Media Production Certificate at Emerson College:

  • Individuals must satisfy the certificate program requirement published for the term in which they register for the first course toward the certificate; all prerequisite coursework must be completed, and program courses must be taken in the prescribed sequence.
  • All Individuals must complete coursework for the certificate program within a period of three years from his or her initial date of registration.
  • Only learning activities offered by Emerson College's Department of Professional Studies & Special Programs may be applied to fulfill the requirements of the certificate program.
  • Enrollment in non-credit, non-degree certificate programs is open to all individuals who have a high school diploma or GED. Prerequisite requirements apply in some instances. To receive a certificate, individuals must submit a "Request for Certificate" form to the Department of Professional Studies & Special Programs within one year of program completion.

MEDIA PRODUCTION COURSES & WORKSHOPS

The Media Production Certificate Program consists of progressive, non-credit courses, hands-on labs and workshops offered during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer, participants hone their skills in media production and complete a final capstone website.

CE0401-9   Production and Aesthetics I: Film and Video

This course is designed to provide the theoretical and critical framework for participant projects required in Media Production I. Through Production Aesthetics I; participants become familiar with the aesthetics of mainstream and experimental film and video production. Participants explore the principles and theories behind film and video form, including shot composition, editing, sound design and narrative, with emphasis on the underlying social and technological contexts of each form's development. Participants should expect to attend classes composed of lectures, discussions and screenings.

Media Production I is the first of a two-semester course designed to introduce participants to digital video and new media production. Using a variety of applications, including Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and DVD Studio Pro, participants will gain a basic competency in digital imaging, web design, and video production. The course also emphasizes concept development and pre-production, and participants produce treatments, storyboards, or other pre-visualizations for several short video productions.

CE0402-9   Production and Aesthetics II: Audio and New Media

Production and Aesthetics II is designed to provide the theoretical and critical framework for projects required of participants in Media Production II. Individuals explore audio and interactive media aesthetics in this course, analyzing the theories and principles of sound design and mixing, web design, interactive non-linear narration, digital imaging and web-based animation. Participants examine a variety of mainstream and experimental projects and learn to think critically about the impact and social function of new media in general. Class time is composed of lectures, discussions, and screenings. (Prerequisite: CE0401-9, Production and Aesthetics I: Film and Video)

In Media Production II, participants learn to use more advanced production techniques, including animation for Web and video, title design, special effects, color correction, data compression, and sound design. This course also provides an introduction to such applications as Flash, Motion, and After Effects; and offers training for more advanced applications in such programs as Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack Pro. CE0405-9   Introduction to Video Field Production
                      12-session, non-credit course, Summer Session 1                                          $1,295.00
Through lectures and hands-on projects, participants learn the equipment and techniques used in single-camera field production and post-production. Participants write and produce a variety of projects, which are edited in digital non-linear mode and then downloaded for review in class.

CE0407-9   Introduction to Studio Television Production

Through lectures and hands-on laboratories, participants learn the principles of pre-production, production, and post-production for the studio as well as for control room procedures. Participants prepare their own productions, from concept to completion. Each project is shot multi-camera, live on tape in the studio. (Prerequisite: CE0405-9, Introduction to Video Field Production)

Film Track

CE0406-9   Introduction to Film Production
                      12-session, non-credit course, Summer Session 1                                          $1,295.00
An introductory level course in the basics of non-synchronous 16mm filmmaking, including basic camera operation, principles of cinematography and lighting, black-and-white film stock information, introduction to non-sync sound recording and transfers, and picture and sound editing.

CE0408-9   Digital Filmmaking
                      12-session, non-credit course, Summer Session 2                                          $1,295.00
The goal of this course is the development of an understanding of the current "digital revolution" from the perspective of the filmmaker, offering participants the opportunity to explore film grammar as it applies to the digital format. All forms of digital filmmaking will be discussed, including its use as a tool for narrative storytelling. The course will cover such topics as how to achieve film-quality results with a DV camera; the limitations as well as the benefits of the DV format for lighting and camera movement; and the necessary steps for shooting DV and blowing up to 35mm. The class will be conducted in a lab format, with students making short digital films. (Prerequisite: CE0406-9, Introduction to Film Production)

The Capstone Project
In addition to successful completion of all required courses and workshops, participants must complete a final project under the supervision of the program coordinator, in order to earn the Media Production Certificate. The capstone project is a final project that takes the form of a Web portfolio and showcases the individual's work completed as part of the program. Individuals must revise any work deemed substandard by the program coordinator before it is uploaded online. The capstone project is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MEDIA CERTIFICATE PROGRAM TUITION & PAYMENTS

Tuition is due upon registration for all Media Production Certificate Program courses and workshops, and for all courses and workshops offered through the Department of Professional Studies and Special Programs. Tuition is calculated per course and individuals must pay tuition in full prior to participating in courses.

Participants may incur additional course-related expenses. Such additional expenses are separate from tuition costs and payments.

Emerson College reserves the right to change any provision of its programs and courses at any time. The College specifically reserves the right to change its tuition rates and any other financial charges. The College also reserves the right to rearrange its courses and class hours, to drop courses for which registration falls below the minimum enrollment, and to change instructor assignments.

Key Faculty

Peter Flynn is a faculty member of Emerson College's Visual and Media Arts Department where he teaches media history, theory and production. Peter is also the co-founder and director of the Boston Irish Film Festival which is now in its 8th year. Peter is currently finishing his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
