Program Description
The Digital Media Production Certificate Program offers participants a practical introduction to digital media with a core curriculum that exposes participants to the practice of the media arts. Through the curriculum, individuals are given the opportunity to develop hands-on production skills, achieve technical proficiency, and make sophisticated choices in the creation of digital media art.
Beginning Fall 2009, the Digital Media Production Certificate Program will consist of the following course requirements. If you began the Media Production Certificate Program Fall Semester 2007 through Spring Semester 2009, please contact Professional Studies for instructions regarding the completion of your certificate program.
WHO SHOULD ENROLL
The Digital Media Production Certificate Program is intended for individuals who would like to gain knowledge and training through non-credit multi-media courses, hands-on labs and workshops. The program is ideal for participants seeking to build digital media production skills, which participants will showcase through a final capstone of their work completed in the program.
The following guidelines apply to all non-credit, non-degree individuals seeking to earn the Digital Media Production Certificate at Emerson College:
- Individuals must satisfy the certificate program requirement published for the term in which they register for the first course toward the certificate; all prerequisite coursework must be completed, and program courses must be taken in the prescribed sequence.
- All Individuals must complete coursework for the certificate program within a period of three years from his or her initial date of registration.
- Only learning activities offered by Emerson College's Department of Professional Studies & Special Programs may be applied to fulfill the requirements of the certificate program.
- Enrollment in non-credit, non-degree certificate programs is open to all individuals who have a high school diploma or GED. Prerequisite requirements apply in some instances. To receive a certificate, individuals must submit a "Request for Certificate" form to the Department of Professional Studies & Special Programs within one year of program completion. The Digital Media Production Certificate Program consists of progressive non-credit evening courses and workshops typically offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Successful completion of the following core courses is required for certificate candidates.

| This is the first of a two-semester course designed to introduce you to digital video and new media production. Using a variety of applications including Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, an DVD Studio Pro, you will gain competency in digital imaging, web design, and video production. Emphasis also will be placed on concept development and pre-production, and you will produce treatments and storyboards (or other relevant pre-visualizations) for several short video productions. | ||

| In Digital Media Production II, you will explore more advanced production techniques including animation for Web and video, title design, special effects, color correction, data compression, and sound design. You will be introduced to a host of new applications including Flash, Motion, and After Effects, and you will continue to do more advanced work in Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. | Video Animation and Advanced Effects is designed to help you develop advanced skills in After Effects and Motion. In this course, you will continue to work on complex compositing and motion effects for 2D animation. Emphasis also will be placed on 3D computer modeling and animation--using Photoshop and Maya to model, texture, and light animated objects and environments. | Building upon the skills developed in Digital Media Production I and II, you will learn advanced techniques for web animation using Flash and Dreamweaver. You will explore more complex ways of animating text and graphics for output on the Web, as well as other interactive media, such as DVD/CD-ROM productions. | The Capstone Course is required of all students intending to complete the Certificate Program in full. Here you will develop a final Web-based portfolio for the work you completed over the course of the Certificate Program. Pre-existing projects may be revised, or updated with the goal of producing a website that best showcases your creative talent and technical expertise. Emphasis also will be placed on distribution and marketing of final projects with a range of options addressed, from broadcasting to podcasting, from film festivals to video streaming. | ||

Workshops are graded on a pass/fail basis.
DIGITAL MEDIA CERTIFICATE PROGRAM TUITION & PAYMENTS
Tuition is due upon registration for all Digital Media Production Certificate Program courses and workshops, and for all courses and workshops offered through the Department of Professional Studies and Special Programs. Tuition is calculated per course and individuals must pay tuition in full prior to participating in courses.
Participants may incur additional course-related expenses. Such additional expenses are separate from tuition costs and payments.
Emerson College reserves the right to change any provision of its programs and courses at any time. The College specifically reserves the right to change its tuition rates and any other financial charges. The College also reserves the right to rearrange its courses and class hours, to drop courses for which registration falls below the minimum enrollment, and to change instructor assignments.
Key Faculty
Peter Flynn is a faculty member of Emerson College's Visual and Media Arts Department where he teaches media history, theory and production. Peter is also the co-founder and director of the Boston Irish Film Festival which is now in its 8th year. Peter is currently finishing his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
