During his career at The Globe, Kurkjian was part of three teams which each won Pulitzers, the most recent of which was for exposing wide-spread child rape and abuse by Boston priests in the Catholic church, and high-level attempts by the archdioceses to cover it all up.

Informal talk with director Jason Reitman
11/09/2009
Tufte Performance and Production Center
Greene Theater (6th floor)
Free

The son of directors Ivan Reitman (Stripes, Ghostbusters) and Geneviève Robert (Casual Sex?), Jason Reitman initially essayed bit and supporting on-camera roles, typically in his father's projects -- such films as Ghostbusters (1984), Twins (1988), Kindergarten Cop (1990), and Dave (1993). Reitman took his directorial bow in 2005 with the acerbic satire Thank You for Smoking (2005), starring Aaron Eckhart -- a freewheeling adaptation of Christopher Buckley's tome about a crafty spin doctor for the tobacco lobby. That outing netted rave reviews from critics across the country. Reitman followed it up with Juno (2007), a comedy drama about an teenage girl (Ellen Page) forced to grow up very quickly when she must contend with an unplanned pregnancy after a tryst with a classmate (Michael Cera). The film opened to glowing reviews, and garnered a number of year-end accolades including a Best Director nomination by the Academy for Reitman's work on the project. At about the same time, Reitman teamed up with actor and scenarist Rainn Wilson (The Office) for Bonzai Shadowhands (2008) -- a seriocomedy about a ninja (Wilson) sinking ever rapidly into a mediocre life.

From PA to President: Paula Shugart's Forum For Women In The Television Industry
11/12/2009
Little Building
Charles Beard Room
Free!
Paula Shugart, current President of the Miss Universe Organization, is a shining example to what can be accomplished in the high-stress world of television production. She will be on campus to discuss her career and the challenges facing women in today's media landscape in a sit-down forum. Light refreshments will be served.
Graduating from Ohio University, Paula moved to California with big dreams and little else. After five days in Los Angeles, she got her "big break" as a PA on the puppet unique sitcom/talk show Madame's Place.
Shugart developed a specialty in live television production while working on Star Search, and was the production supervisor for the Academy Awards, American Music Awards, Golden Globes, International Rock Awards, President Clinton's 50th Birthday Celebration, as well as several Lifetime Television specials. She has also worked on the television side of Madonna's "Blond Ambition Tour" and the Rolling Stones' "Steel Wheels" Tour, and served as Senior Producer on MTV's hit show Fanatic.
Shugart joined the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) in 1998 as the Vice President of Production and in 2001 was appointed President by Donald Trump who, incidentally, had never met Paula but had noticed her outstanding work within the company. As President, Paula has strived to break the stereotypes typically associated with beauty pageants, and has successfully boosted ratings for the organization's three major pageant events (nationally televised Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, and the Miss Universe Pageant, broadcast live around the world).
Additionally, since the partial sale of the organization to NBC, Paula has spearheaded contestant appearances on Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal and Identity, and was the Executive Producer to the MTV reality series Pageant Place, which followed the lives of MUO titleholders.
We hope you can join us for this special event!

Shane Hurlbut ASC, Cinematographer and Emerson Alumnus, "Catch The Wave: How The Canon 5D Mark II Is A Game Changer For Student Films"
11/12/2009
216 Tremont
Bill Bordy Theater
Free

SHANE HURLBUT, ASC is an accomplished cinematographer who graduated from Emerson College with a Bachelor of Arts in Film. The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) nominated Hurlbut's first feature for Best Picture in the category of Motion Picture, Miniseries or Pilot Television. Currently, Shane is shooting an untitled Navy SEAL feature directed by Scotty Waugh and Mike McCoy for Bandito Brothers, Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers. This highly anticipated footage details the covert operations performed by the US Elite Navy SEALS.
Hurlbut's versatility and expertise affords him the opportunity to work within any production budget. In addition, he has designed a workflow with his Elite Team which reduces production's financial and eco-footprint, making it more efficient to accomplish the same number of set-ups as big budget projects. Shane and his Elite Team have shot a total of 14 films in a variety of genres, always maintaining the highest standards.
Shane balances shooting features with commercial work, using his diverse skill set to maximize short form campaigns. His credit list includes: Visa, Coca-Cola, Verizon, American Express, US Navy, Discovery, Big Love, and Deadwood. He has also worked with music legends The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins.
In response to Hurlbut's mastery of the Canon 5D and his trailblazing spirit, he has become a coveted public speaker. Addressing his colleagues within the film industry at seminars & panel discussions as well as young film students during course studies with an eye to the future.
Further explore:
Cutting-edge technologies, including the HDSLR Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera advancements developed by Hurlbut and his elite team to turn the 5D into a movie-making machine.
A little known fact about Shane: he was the number one goalie for college soccer in New York State. Besides soccer, his passion includes good movies, cooking, spending time with his children, wine tasting, and mentoring aspiring filmmakers.
**Keynote Speech: "Catch The Wave: How The Canon 5D Mark II Is A Game Changer For Student Films"
Shane will provide a stimulating, interactive discussion about the Canon 5D Mark II camera and how it changes the way student films are being made. Hurlbut refers to this camera as a "game changer" because of its versatility. Important features include: compact nature of the camera itself, lighter still lenses, image stabilizing ability, and flexibility to accent the action in new ways with increased depth and sharpness. Finally, there is an affordable camera for a student filmmaker with ability to deliver images that rival 35 mm film. Shooting with the Canon 5D Mark II prepares students to dive into the professional world of making movies with experience.
Shane Hurlbut, ASC combines his passion for shooting film with his natural gift of teaching as an in demand keynote speaker. After completing "Terminator:Salvation" directed by McG and starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington for Warner Brothers Pictures, Shane researched and accessorized the Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera to turn it into a movie making machine! Shane designed a helmet mount for the Canon 5D Mark II to shoot 9 webisodes as part of a marketing campaign for "Terminator: Salvation." The webisodes were produced by Bandito Brothers, Warner Brothers and Wonderland Sound and Vision. Shane also used the helmet mount for the Canon 5D Mark II for a ride experience video for the "Terminator:Salvation" rollercoaster ride at 6 Flags Magic Mountain starring Moon Bloodgood and Common produced by Bandito Brothers, Halcyon and 6 Flags Corporation. Cheech and Chong's "Light Up America" was another project where Shane used the Canon 5D Mark II for the Weinstein Company. Currently, Shane is working on the film, "The Only Easy Day Is Yesterday" directed by Scotty Waugh and Mike McCoy for Bandito Brothers, Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers. He is using a combination of the Canon 5D Mark II and traditional film cameras to capture the unique undercover operations of the Navy SEALS.
