Meet the Coach

Mason AstleyMason Astley became the Emerson College men’s and women’s tennis coach in the summer of 2008 and brought a wealth of tennis coaching and playing experience to the position.

A 1999 graduate of Swarthmore College, Mason played varsity tennis and soccer while majoring in English Literature. As an undergraduate he was named a David S. Cowden Scholar in honor of Professor David S. Cowden '42, who taught English literature at Swarthmore from 1949 until his death in May 1983.

Mason’s tennis teaching and coaching experience began in 2003 when he was certified by the Professional Tennis Registry.  He became an assistant coach and instructor at the Adirondack Club in Franklin, Mass., where he coached a team in the Dorothy Bruno Hills Indoor Tennis League and taught both private and group lessons.

Concurrently with his work at the Adirondack Club, Mason was head coach of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute tennis team.  His responsibilities included all the on-court and administrative responsibilities of WPI’s program.

The Mount Auburn Club in Watertown, Massachusetts was Mason’s next stop. As a full-time professional there, Mason continues to be involved with teams in the Hills Indoor Tennis League, and he teaches approximately 35 hours of private and group lessons per week.  He has competed as a member of the Mount Auburn Club Open-Level Central Massachusetts Indoor Tennis League.

In addition to his work at Mount Auburn, Mason has earned his Master’s Degree from the Boston University School of Education in Counseling Psychology with a Sport Psychology concentration. In 2008 he founded Astley Performance Coaching as a consultant to athletes and artists on performance issues.
