Meet the Coaches
Head Coach Phil McElroy
Phil McElroy, the Emerson College head softball coach, led the Lions to their fifth straight appearance in post season tournament play in 2008. On April 16, 2008 McElroy captured his 200th NCAA win against Lasell College, in his eighth season coaching the team.
Entering the 2010 season, McElroy is 261 and 161 in his overall career record and 245 and 138 at Emerson. Emerson has qualified for the GNAC Tournament in each of the last eleven seasons twice winning the championship and once finishing as runners-up, and has produced seven National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Selections (Ellen Boss 2004, Mallory Moretti 2005, Bridget Farago 2007, 2008, 2009, Lindsay DeStefano 2006, 2007, 2008, Kelsey Tuthill 2009, and Kendal Peiguss 2009) five New England Softball Coaches Association All-Stars, five ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District picks and 35 GNAC All-Conference selections since 1999.
McElroy coaches teams to outstanding academic records. In 2007 and 2009 the NFCA named Emerson College as the Nation's top academic softball team and had several players recognized for being National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athletes for carrying a grade point average of 3.5 or above. In 2008 the team ranked fourth in GPA.In 2007, McElroy completed the Four-Star Master Coach certification offered by the NFCA, the highest level recognized by that association.
Prior to Emerson, McElroy was an assistant coach at Bentley College (1994) and took over as interim coach in 1995 were he led the Falcons to a 16-23 record. From 1997-2001 McElroy was an assistant coach at Reading Memorial High School where alongside his sister, head coach Jill McElroy won the 2001 Massachusetts Division 1 State High School Championship.
Accomplished in his field, Coach McElroy also brings over a decade of travel ball experience with him as head coach of the Middlesex County Krush and the assistant coach of the Boston Bat Busters. These two youth softball programs have helped place numerous female student-athletes in college softball programs around the country. Coach McElroy's accomplishments with the Krush include nine Metro Boston ASA Championships and seven trips to ASA, NSA, and Pony National Championships.
Coach McElroy is also the current Junior Olympic Commissioner of Metro Boston ASA (1998-Present). He resides in Arlington, MA .
