Meet the Coach

Head Coach Phil McElroy
Coach McElroyPhil McElroy’s fifth year as the Emerson College head softball coach was the most successful in school history as the 2006 Lions went 34-8 overall 22-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play and earned a third straight trip to the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Regional Tournament were they were named the number one seed.

McElroy owns a 158 and 98 overall career record and a 142 and 75 record at Emerson. Emerson has qualified for the GNAC Tournament the last eight years, and produced three National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Selections (Ellen Boss 2004, Mallory Moretti 2005, Lindsay DeStefano 2006) four New England Softball Coaches Association All-Stars, four ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District picks and 19 GNAC All-Conference selections since 1999.

In 2005, McElroy was recognized as a Three-Star Master Coach by the NFCA and this spring is expected to complete his Four-Star certificate, the highest level recognized by that association. In 2004 and 2005 Coach McElroy was named "Emerson College Coach of the Year".

Prior to Emerson, McElroy was an assistant coach at Bentley College (1994) and took over as interim coach in 1995 were he led the Falcons to a 16-23 record. From 1997-2001 McElroy was an assistant coach at Reading Memorial High School where alongside his sister, head coach Jill McElroy won the 2001 Massachusetts Division 1 State High School Championship.

Accomplished in his field, Coach McElroy also brings over a decade of travel ball experience with him as head coach of the Middlesex County Krush and the assistant coach of the Boston Bat Busters. These two youth softball programs have helped place numerous female student-athletes in college softball programs around the country. Coach McElroy's accomplishments with the Krush include nine Metro Boston ASA Championships and seven trips to ASA, NSA, and Pony National Championships.

Coach McElroy is also the current Junior Olympic Commissioner of Metro Boston ASA (1998-Present). He resides in Arlington , MA .

Joy TashjianJoy Tashjian enters her fifth year as Emerson's assistant coach after spending four years as the Lions centerfielder. While at Emerson Tashjian was named three times to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All- Conference team and team MVP in her senior year. Tashjian's energetic and upbeat attitude makes her the emotional leader for the Lions; she works with the top of the order short game players as well as the outfielders.
