Women's Soccer Names Tri-Captains

Emerson College has announced that one upcoming senior and two upcoming juniors have been selected as captains of the 2008 Lions. Midfielder/Defender Alex Matthews (Jr., Queensbury, N.Y., above left) and midfielders Kendra Davidson (So., Newport Beach, Calif., above center) and Katie Franzeo (So., Henderson, Nev., above right) have been named captains.

Whalen Named All-New England in Soccer

Whalen'08CroppedEmerson College women’s soccer forward  Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) has been named to the D3kicks.com All-New England second team.  Whalen, the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Year led the GNAC in goals and total points with 19 in 18 games. She also tallied four assists. She is one of only four players from the GNAC to be named to one of the teams.  Whalen led Emerson to an 13-3-3 record and the GNAC Championship game where the Lions lost to Emmanuel 3-0.

 

Emerson College Honored by NSCAA with Academic Award

Emerson College is one of 73 institutions nationwide to be honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with that organization’s team Academic Award for both its men’s and women’s programs.  This is the third consecutive year Emerson has earned the honor, and Emerson is one of only five New England institutions from all NCAA Divisions to have both teams qualify for the award.

The Emerson men’s program compiled a grade point average of 3.30 on a four point scale, while the women have an aggregate 3.32.  There are 112 men’s teams and 297 women’s teams that qualify for the award based on grades from the 2006-2007 academic year. On the men’s side Emerson is one of only four Division III teams in New England to qualify for the award.  Bates College, Colby College, and Lesley University are the other three. The women are joined by New England Division III schools Colby-Sawyer College, Endicott College, Lesley University, Roger Williams University, Simmons College, Smith College, Tufts University, and Wheaton College. The other four New England institutions that had both men’s and women’s teams qualify are Dartmouth College, Lesley University, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Vermont.  Dartmouth, New Hampshire and Vermont are Division I teams, Lesley is Division III.

The soccer teams are the second and third teams to be honored by national organizations for their academic achievements.  The Emerson Women’s Softball team was named the 2007 Division III Team Academic Champion by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Judges End Emerson Season with 3-0 Win in ECAC's

Katie Hartman WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team got a pair of goals from rookie forward Tiffany Pacheco (Rehoboth, Mass.) as the top-seeded Judges defeated No. 8 Emerson College, 3-0, in the opening round of the ECAC Division III New England championships.

Brandeis (11-6-2) got all the scoring they would need in the 24th minute. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Gorenkoff (Woodbury, N.J.) took a pass from senior forward Tzlil Castel (Boston, Mass.) near the goal-line in the right corner. Gorenkoff dribbled closer to the box and curved a ball into the net for her eighth goal of the season. The score tied her for the team lead this season.

The Judges added their second goal just under five minutes before the half. Pacheco took a pass from classmate Taryn Martiniello and dribbled past the goalkeeper, enabling her to put the ball into the far side of the net. It was Pacheco's third goal of the season. She added goal number five in the 76th minute on an assist from Gorenkoff.

Emerson (13-5-4) sees its season come to an end despite a fine performance by goalkeeper Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J., above left), who kept her side in the game with 16 saves, including 10 in the second half. Brandeis outshot the Lions, 33-14, and owned a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks for the match.

Women's Soccer Qualifies for New England Division III Tournament

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Emerson College women's soccer team will make it's first appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Championship Tournament when it travels to Waltham, Mass., to take on top seeded Brandeis University in a first round game.

Brandeis will be making its fifth-straight appearance in the tournament. The Judges, who finished the regular season with a 10-6-2 record, earned the tournament's top seed and will host No. 8 seeded Emerson College (13-4-4) at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 on Gordon Field.

Emerson reached the finals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, falling to Emmanuel College in the finals. The Lions are paced by senior forward Casey Whalen of Great Barrington, Mass., the GNAC Player of the Year. Whalen led the conference with 19 goals and 42 points, ranking in the top 30 in the NCAA in both categories. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams on the women's soccer pitch. Brandeis has posted a 2-0 record against the ECAC field, with wins over Roger Williams and MIT, while Emerson is 0-2-1, with an OT loss to Curry and a loss and a tie against St. Joseph's.

The other first-round match-ups – also played on Wednesday - in the ECAC women's soccer tournament feature No. 2 seeded Roger Williams University (15-5-1) hosting No. 7 Curry College (13-5-1); No. 3 Keene State College (12-8-1) taking on No. 6 Western New England College (13-5-3); and No. 4 St. Joseph's (Maine) College (16-1-3) facing No. 5 MIT (12-6). The semifinals will be played on Saturday afternoon and finals on Sunday with higher seeds hosting each match.

Whalen Named GNAC Player of the Year, Moretti and Davidson Also Honored

Casey Whalen Emerson College forward Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass., left) has been named the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Year in balloting by conference coaches.  Whalen was selected from the eleven players chosen by the coaches as first-team members.

Whalen led the Conference in goals scored, goals per game and points scored, and she tied for second in the GNAC in game winning goals with four. She had 19 goals, and four assists in 18 games.  One of Emerson's tri-captains, Whalen was also a first team selection in 2006.  She transferred to Emerson following a year at Goucher College.Mal Moretti

Mallory Moretti (Sr., Warwick, R.I., right) and Kendra Davidson (So., Newport Beach, Calif.) were each second team selections.  Moretti, a forward was third on the Lions in goals scored with six, and added two assists.  She was also a tri-captain.

Kendra Davidson Davidson (left) played midfield.  She scored four goals and added three assists.  Davidson scored a goal in Emerson's semi-final victory over St. Joseph's College and also scored on her penalty kick opportunity in the shootout after the tie. In addition to being named to the All-conference team, she was selected to the GNAC All-tournament team.


Saints End Lions GNAC Dream

Lisa Viccione Emmanuel College (15-2-2) used relentless pressure and stingy defense to capture the championship of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a 4-1 victory over Emerson College (13-4-4). 

The Lions took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the game's 26th minute by Lisa Vicchione (FY., Meredian, Conn.) after an Emerson's Lindsay D'Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) was taken down in the box by an Emmanuel defender.  Emmanuel responded just over 11 minutes later as Hillary Mota lofted a high shot over Emerson goal keeper Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.), that Hartman appeared to lose in the sun.  The team entered the half in a 1-1 deadlock.

Emmanuel dominated play in the second half getting the eventual game winning goal from Caitlin Egan on an assist from tournament MVP Amber Di Nucci at 50:59.  Di Nucci deposited her won goal in the 68th minute, and Stephanie Levesque closed the scoring with a breakaway down the middle at 79:30.

Emerson's Kendra Davidson (So., Newport Beach, Calif.), Hannah Cotier (FY, East Hampton, Conn.) and Sara Hogan (Sr., Cumberland, R.I.) were each named to the All-tournament team.

Penalty Kicks Boost Lions to Championship Game

Caroline DevinIt took 110 minutes of soccer and 10 penalty kicks but the Emerson College women's soccer team will advance to the championship game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference for only the second time in its history.

Emerson and St. Joseph's College ties 2-2 at the end of regulation and played through two "golden goal" overtimes before the issue was decided by penalty kicks.  Caroline Devin (FY, Brockton, Mass., left) and Kendra Davidson gave Emerson a 3-0 lead, both scoring unassisted in the 11th minute. St. Joe's cut the lead in half 20 minutes later with the teams entering halftime with the Lions holding a 2-1 lead.

25 minutes into the second half St. Joseph's tied the game and neither team could muster a goal through the final 20 minutes of regulation or the overtime periods.

In the shootout, Lisa Viccione (FY, Meridien, Conn.) scored first for the Lions.  Following a miss, Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.), Davidson, and Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, Calif.) all scored to give Emerson the 4-3 edge in kicks and a ticket to the Championship game.

In the title match, third seeded Emerson will face top seeded Emmanuel College.  The game will be played Saturday, November 3 at 1:00pm at Pine Manor College.  The winner will get an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III National tournament.

Davidson Goal Advances Lions

Kendra DavidsonKendra Davidson (So., Newport Beach, Calif.) scored on a header in the 17th minute as third seeded Emerson College (13-3-3) eliminated sixth seeded Simmons College (8-9-2) 1-0 in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Lions advance to play second seed St. Joseph's College in Standish, Maine on Tuesday afternoon.

Emerson dominated the first half of play out shooting Simmons 14-4 but were unable to put anything other than Davidson's goal by Simmons keeper Rachel Elliot. Lindsay D'Andrea (FY., Medford, N.J.) assisted Davidson on a cross from the left side.

Much of the game was played in a wind-swept rain. Despite the weather Emerson continually got good scoring opportunities but were unable to convert as Elliott had 14 saves. Emerson totaled 28 shots for the game. Simmons managed six second half shots as Emerson net minder Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) turned away seven shots in the game.

Whalen Goes Out With a Bang As Emerson Cruises to 6-0 Win Over Albertus Magnus

Casey WhalenEmerson College forward Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) celebrated Emerson's Senior Night by scoring a career high four goals as Emerson (12-3-3, 11-1-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) defeated Albertus Magnus College ( 10-5-3, 6-5-2 GNAC) 6-0 in the regular season finale for both squads. The win ties Emerson for second place in the GNAC standings, and earns the Lions the third seed in the GNAC championship Tournament that starts Saturday, when the Lions will host sixth seeded Simmons College at 5:00pm.

Whalen scored the only goal of the first half in the 29th minute taking a cross from Lindsay D'Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) and depositing it into the lower right corner of the net. Whalen opened the second half with a flourish, scoring three times in the space of 2:12. The first came on a drive to the right side off a throw in at 46:57. A minute and a half later she scored off a rebound of a D'Andrea shot. Her final goal was an unassisted tally at 49:09.

Kim Richards (FY, Newbury Park, Cal.) scored Emerson's fifth goal on a header assisted by Jessica Lander (FY, Casselberry, Fla.) in the 78th minute and April Leavenworth (Jr., Woodbury, Conn.) closed the scoring with a shot to the lower right corner at 82:15.

Emerson outshot Albertus Magnus 46 - 1. Falcon goalkeeper Christina Oddo tallied 11 saves.

D'Andrea Named GNAC Rookie of the Week

Lindsay D'AndreaEmerson College's Lindsay D'Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's Soccer rookie of the week for the week ending October 22. During the week D'Andrea scored two goals. The first came in an overtime loss to Curry College. D'Andrea scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time to force the overtime period. Her second goal was the Lions' only score in Sunday's 1-1 double overtime tie with GNAC top ranked Emmanuel College.

Whalen Earns Second GNAC Player of the Week Honor

Casey WhalenEmerson College forward Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass., left) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her performance during the week ending October 14. Whalen had three goals and an assist on the week, including both Lion tallies in a 2-1 overtime victory at Lasell College that gave Emerson its ninth consecutive victory. The win kept the Lions tied for second place in the GNAC Standings.Katie Hartman

Whalen was previously honored by the GNAC as Player of the Week for the week ending September 30.

Emerson goalkeeper Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J., right) was also honored by the GNAC for her play last week. During the week, Hartman was credited with shutouts in Conference victories over Rivier College and Norwich University, and gave up only one goal in Emerson's overtime thriller against Lasell College.

OT Goal Ends Lions Streak

Laura Lydon took a crossing pass from Amanda Howland 3:32 into the first overtime period and drove it into the lower left corner of the net as Curry College (10-4-1) defeated Emerson College (11-3-2) 3-2 in a non-conference game. The victory for the Colonels snapped Emerson's nine match win streak.

Emerson had tied the game in the 89th minute on a goal by Lindsay D'Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.). D'Andrea drilled a shot from just inside the 18 yard box to the upper right hand corner of the net.

Curry led the scoring with the first half's only goal as Ashley Hansbury scored on a breakaway down the middle and shot to the lower right corner 9:41 into the game.

Emerson tied the score on a Mal Moretti (Sr., Westerly, R.I.) rebound off her own shot at the 59:33 mark. Hansbury gave the Colonels a 2-1 lead on another breakaway, this time down the left side at the 63:27 mark.

Danielle Denham (Sr., Framingham, Mass.) had seven saves in the Curry net. Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) had four first half saves for the Lions and Ana Lowry (Jr., Barrington, R.I.) picked up two in the second half. Emerson out shot Curry 20 -14.

Emerson Tops Norwich for Eighth Straight Win

Emerson College (10-2-2, 9-1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) got two first half goals and made the margin stand as the Lions defeated Norwich University (10-4-0, 8-2-0 GNAC) 2-0 in a key conference contest.

Emerson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, Cal.) in the 13th minute. Lerma sent a throw in from the left side across the net to the lower right corner.

At the 37:25 mark Tamara Kearney (FY., Everett, Mass.) knocked in a rebound of her own shot to give the Lions a two goal margin.

Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) had three saves for the Lions in recording her first full game shutout of the season. Nicki Hunsicker had nine saves for the Cadets. Emerson outshot Norwich 19-5.

D’Andrea Scores With 21 Seconds Remaining to Lift Emerson Past Simmons

Boston, Mass. – Lindsay D’Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) scored with 21 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 4-4 tie and give the Emerson College (8-2-2, 7-1-0 GNAC) women’s soccer team a 5-4 victory over Simmons College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Simmons (4-8-1, GNAC 3-4-1) struck first in the opening minutes of the game. Freshman Natalie Stever found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Allie Megna 2:23 into the contest. The Sharks added to their advantage before halftime when senior captain Christina Aldrich buried a shot from 10 yards out 15:34 prior to the break.

Emerson erased the deficit just four minutes into the second stanza. Senior captain Mal Moretti (Sr., Westerly, R.I.) scored both goals, just 42 seconds apart, to the even the score at two apiece. The Lions took the lead at the 66:32 mark when Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) stripped a Simmons defender, went in on goal and buried the ball in the left side of the net.

The Sharks responded with just over 10 minutes remaining as freshman Brooke MacKenzie, who leads her team with seven goals this season, received a drop pass from Megna and found the upper-right-hand corner of the net from 20 yards out. Andrea Caldwell scored 4:20 later to give the Sharks a 4-3 lead off another pass from Megna, who had four assists on the day.

But, the Lions, who have won six straight, tied the score 1:40 later on Moretti’s third goal of the game and regained the lead for good D’Andrea’s goal off a cross fromStephanie Hachem (FY, Shrewsbury, Mass.) with 21 seconds to go.

Goalkeeper Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) saved six shots for the Lions, while sophomore keeper Rachel Elliott recorded 10 stops for the Sharks.

Lions Win Fifth Straight, Drop Gators 9-1

Emerson College (7-2-2, 6-1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) had seven different players score including two goals each from Sara Hogan (Sr., Cumberland, R.I.) andRachel Lerma (So., Irvine, Cal.) as the Lions defeated Pine Manor College (0-8-0, 0-5-0 GNAC) 9-1. The win was the fifth straight for Emerson.

Lerma opened the scoring in the ninth minute as she scored on a breakaway down the right side. Pine Manor answered nine minutes later as Angeline Capre scored on a direct kick. Emerson's Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) gave the Lions the lead in the 31st minute as she shot from 15 yards from the center to the lower left corner. Kendra Davidson (So., Newport Beach, Cal.) and Courtney Stefancyk (FY., Uxbridge, Mass.) finished Emerson's first half scoring.

Three minutes into the second half Hogan led the scoring with a penalty kick. Lerma followed with her second goal less than a minute later on an assist from Mal Moretti (Sr., Westerly, R.I.). Moretti had a goal of her own at the 51 minute mark, while Hogan Drilled a shot from 30 yards. Lisa Viccione (FY., Meridien, Conn.) closed the scoring in the 54th minute.

Pine Manor goalkeeper Meaghan Sage had 17 saves as the Gators were outshot by the Lions 49-2.

Whalen Earns GNAC Player of the Week Honor

Casey WhalenEmerson College forward Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.), has been selected the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending September 30. Whalen, Emerson's leading scorer, continued her strong play during the week with a three goal hat-trick, including the game winning goal, in the GNAC win at Johnson & Wales University and scored the Lions' first goal in a GNAC 2-1 victory at St. Joseph (Conn.) College. Whalen has led the Lions to a 6-2-2 record.

Johnson & Wales Women’s Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision To Emerson

East Providence, R.I. – Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass., left) recorded a hat trick to lead Emerson to a 4-1 victory against Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Whalen put the visiting Lions on the board early when her unassisted goal just 4:22 into the contest gave the team a 1-0 advantage. Johnson & Wales responded quickly, however as sophomore Jennifer Paquin put in a throw in from freshman Melissa Kmon to knot the score 1-1 at the 6:22 mark. Whalen struck again at 24:36, giving Emerson a 2-1 lead, an advantage the team would take into halftime.

Whalen’s third goal of the game came at the 60:15 mark and the Lions capped off the scoring for the afternoon at 72:27 on a goal by Mal Moretti (Sr., Westerly, R.I.)as Emerson took the 4-1 victory.

Sophomore Kate Nast made 11 saves in the setback for Johnson & Wales while senior Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) and junior Ana Lowry (Jr., Barrington, R.I.)combined for the win in net for Emerson.

Lions Blank Suffolk, 6-0

Emerson College (4-2-2, 3-1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) started their scoring with a quick goal just 3:56 into the contest from Lindsay D'Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) who headed in a picture perfect corner kick from Kendra Davidson (So, Newport Beach, CA.).

The second goal of the game came from Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) at 10:58 with a one-on-one 15 yard shot that was assisted by Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, CA.). Tamara Kearney (FY, Everett, Mass.) capped the first half scoring at 19:07 with a finish on a cross from D'Andrea 10 yards out.

Whalen tallied her second goal of the game 17:11 into the second half with an unassisted deflection off of the goalie. Next, Kearney followed by putting up her second goal at 38:08 on a beautiful unassisted breakaway. Just 31 seconds later, Caroline Devin (FY, Brockton, MA) finished the scoring with a goal from 10 yards out assisted by Kearney. The Lions out shot Suffolk by a margin of 43 to four en route to their victory.

Lions Offense Grounds Eagles

Sara HoganEmerson College (3-2-2, 2-1-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) built a 5-0 first half lead and coasted to a 6-0 victory over Daniel Webster College (0-6-0, 0-4-0 GNAC). Six different Lions scored in the contest in which the Lions out shot the Eagles 38-3.

Stephanie Hachem (FY, Shrewsbury, Mass.) led off the scoring only 3:59 into the game as she drove a shot from the left side to the upper right hand corner. Less than six minutes later defender Sara Hogan (Sr., Cumberland, R.I., left) lobbed a shot to the top center of the net on an assist from Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, Cal.). Hachem assisted Lindsay D'Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) in the 11th minute.

The next two scores came off deflections by Daniel Webster goalkeeper Rose Chapman. Kim Richards (FY, Newbury Park, Cal.) went high, and Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) drove a shot off Chapman's hands. Sarah Kneezle (Sr., Warren, Ver.) closed the scoring in the 81st minute on a breakaway.

Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) had two first half saves for Emerson, while Chapman knocked 13 shots aside for the Eagles.

Leopards, Lions play to 1-1 Draw

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman forward Sarah Norkiewicz scored the game-tying goal with 22:50 left in regulation, and neither team would get the go-ahead goal as Wentworth (1-4-1) and Emerson (2-2-2) played to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference contest at Sweeney Field.

Neither team could get the upper hand in the first half, as Emerson held a slim, 8-7 shot advantage, but only two of those shots went on net, as opposed to four from the Leopards.

At the 63:56 mark, Lion freshman midfielder Lindsay D’Andrea (Medford, N.J.) broke in all alone down the left side and broke the scoring drought. However, the lead would not last long as Norkiewicz put in a rebound of a sophomore defender Mallory Beirne (Guilford, Conn.) shot for her first collegiate goal, which came 4:14 after Emerson had gone up 1-0.

In the 82nd minute Emerson had a chance to go ahead, but senior keeper Allison Wellman (Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped a freshman midfielder Stephanie Hachem (Shrewsbury, Mass.) shot from point-blank range. Over the course of the second half, Wentworth held an 11-9 shot advantage.

The Leopards, who would outshoot the Lions 3-0 in the two overtimes, had their best chance to score the golden goal when junior forward Katie Brown (North Brookfield, Mass.) put Wentworth’s only shot on goal in the extra frame, but was saved by freshman Ana Lowry (Barrington, R.I.).

Wellman made eight saves—four in each half—for the Leopards, who held a 21-17 advantage in shots. Lowry made four saves and allowed one goal in 65:00 of action. She came on for senior Katie Hartman (Northfield, N.J.), who made two first-half saves.

Monks Edge Lions in GNAC Tilt

Mikayla Call scored two second half goals to lead St. Joseph's College (5-0, 2-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) over Emerson College (2-2-1, 1-1-0 GNAC) 2-1 in Boston.

Following a scoreless first half, Call drilled a shot from the right side to the lower left corner from 15 yards out in the 53rd minute. The goal came off an assist from Anna Willis . Thirteen minutes later Call again scored, this time unassisted, off a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick.

Lindsay D’Andrea (FY, Medford, N.J.) pulled Emerson to within a goal driving a shot to the top left corner from 15 yards out on an assist from Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) at 70:20, but the goal was Emerson's last good scoring opportunity.

Wilson Leads UMass Boston over Lions, 3-0

Boston, MA – Senior forward Amber Wilson netted a pair of goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women’s soccer team over visiting Emerson College this afternoon, 3-0, at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 2-3-0 on the season, while the Lions suffer their first defeat of the year and fall to 2-1-1. It’s the first victory for UMass Boston over Emerson since a 6-0 home victory on September 16, 1997, snapping a seven-match winless streak.

Wilson’s first score of the day came when she dribbled in close to the net and deposited a shot into the right side at 61:03 of the second half to give the Beacons a 2-0 margin. She capped the game’s scoring, with another unassisted goal, when she took the ball down the field to the left corner, to draw the Lions’ keeper in, and sent a ground shot into the opposite corner for her team-leading fourth tally of the season and a 3-0 UMass Boston lead at the 70:47 mark of the second half.

Freshman midfielder Nicki Finamore wasted no time opening the scoring for the Beacons, taking the ball down the field and scoring her first collegiate goal, into the vacant right side, just 41 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 edge.

Junior keeper Courtney Haroules stopped 11 shots for UMass Boston to earn her first career shutout, while Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) stopped four of seven shots on net in the first 79:08 of action for Emerson, before yielding to Shayna Reich (So., West Hills, CA) who turned away both shots on net.

Mount Ida Falls 2-1 to Emerson

Rachel LermaNewton, MA – Today was the first round of conference play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for the Mount Ida College women’s soccer team facing off against the Lions from Emerson College. It was close the whole way through until the final three minutes of the game when the Lions came down roaring netting one with 3:35 left on the clock on a hot Saturday in September at Mount Ida College.

The Mustangs got the game started first with a rocket by freshman Lindsay Lincoln over the head of Emerson goaltender Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, NJ) to make the score 1-0. It was Lincoln’s first goal in a Mount Ida uniform.

The Lions came storming back with a goal of their own with 1:39 left in the first half by Alex Matthews (Jr., Queensbury, NY) coming off a cross by midfielder Lisa Viccione (FY, Meridian, CT).

It was all knotted up at the half by a score of 1-1 until the final three minutes of the game. Emerson was firing at the net until a ball popped out to Lions sophomore Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, CA, above left) who launched one in the bottom right corner of the net. This would be the final goal of the contest giving Emerson the victory and its first conference win of the season.

Emerson Blanks Eastern Nazarene in Home Opener

Casey WhalenEmerson College (1-0-1) out shot Eastern Nazarene College by a margin of 34 to three en route to a 6-0 victory in the home opener for the Lions. Five different Emerson players scored in the contest.

Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass., left) led off the scoring 6:10 into the contest as she scored from 12 yards on an assist from Caroline Devin (FY, Brockton, Mass.). Devin and Wahlen reversed the roles less than two minutes later on a low shot from the right side to the left corner. Jessica Lander (So., Casselberry, Fla.) capped the first half scoring at 21:37 on a long shot from the right side over the goal keeper.

In the second half Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, CA) led off the scoring 3:31 into the half on a breakaway following a pass from Devin. Whalen scored her second goal of the contest at 56:40 also on a breakaway. The final goal of the game came off the foot of April Leavenworth (Jr., Woodbury, Conn.) at the 64:39 mark.

Joy Steinwedel and Brittany Hardie each had five saves for the Crusaders.

Lions Open Season With Deadlock

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - Freshman midfielder Katlyn Duarte scored the game-tying goal with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation time, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women’s soccer team and Emerson played to a 3-3, double overtime tie in the Corsairs’ home opener at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday. Duarte knocked home the rebound of a shot by freshman midfielder Krystal Monteiro with 7:37 remaining.

Brittany Jones (FY, Southington, Conn.) had given the Lions a 3-2 lead when she converted a long pass from Rachel Lerma (So., Irvine, Cal.) and scored from in front of the net with 18:08 to play.

The Lions took an early 2-0 lead. Caroline Devin (FY, Brockton, Mass.) converted Jessica Lander’s (So., Casselberry, Fla.) pass at the 11:48 mark to make it 1-0, and Casey Whalen (Sr., Great Barrington, Mass.) took a pass from Mal Moretti (Sr., Westerly, R.I.) and scored on a breakaway less than five minutes later.

UMass Dartmouth came back. Junior forward Sarah Killingbeck worked a give and go with junior midfielder Jessica Swenson and scored at the 27:29 mark. Freshman forward Carleen Ellis tied the score with her first career goal at the 53:50 mark. Monteiro assisted on her goal as well.

The Corsairs out shot Emerson 23-19. UMass Dartmouth freshman goalkeeper Tanya Braga and goalie Katie Hartman (Sr., Northfield, N.J.) of the Lions each made 12 saves.

Emerson College women's soccer coach Jason Tassinari has announced that three upcoming seniors have been selected as captains of the 2007 Lions. Goalkeeper Katie Hartman (Jr., Northfield, N.J., top right), midfielder Mallory Moretti (Jr., Westerly, R.I., right) and forward Casey Whalen (Jr., Great Barrington, Mass., center) have been chosen by a vote of their teammates.

"Although I expect all my seniors and veterans to be great leaders and role models, Katie, Casey, and Mallory have earned the respect of their teammates and the coaching staff with their attention to detail, work rate, and passion for the team and the tradition of the program," Tassinari says. "They, along with fellow senior teammates Baleigh Wark-Acebo and Sara Hogan, are great ambassadors for the Women's Soccer program and will model the way for the younger players with class and dignity."

Hartman has been the starting goalkeeper since her arrival on campus in 2004. She has compiled a 31-17-5 record in that time. Moretti has tallied 17 career goals with eight assists in her three seasons with the Lions, and led the 2006 team with eight goals. Whalen transferred following one year at Goucher College. She was a first team All-Great Northeast Athletic conference selection in 2006 and over her two year career with the Lions she has tallied 18 goals and eight assists.

Four Lions Named to GNAC All-Conference Team

Four Emerson College Women's Soccer players have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference 2006 All-Conference team by a vote of the Conference coaches. Midfielder Stacey Ambrose (Sr., Londonderry, N.H., above left) and forward, Casey Whalen (Jr., Great Barrington, Mass., above second from left) were first team selections, while defender Erica Coray (Sr., Ashburn, Vir., above second from right) and midfielder Katie Franzeo (First-year, Henderson, Nev., above right) were second team picks.

Ambrose and Whalen tied for fourth on the Lions in scoring, each netting five goals and three assists. Franzeo was the team's leading scorer with 21 points on seven goals and seven assists. Coray, who was a first team pick as a midfielder in 2005, became the team's top defender and also added three assists on the season.

Moretti Honored as Player of the Week By Two Different Organizations

Mallory MorettiEmerson forward Mallory Moretti (Jr., Westerly, R.I.) has been named the Women's Soccer Player of the Week by both the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. During the week ending October 15, Moretti scored six goals in leading the Lions to GNAC wins over Pine Manor College and St. Joseph College and a non-conference victory over Eastern Nazarene College. Moretti scored the only goal of the game in the Lion's 1-0 victory over St. Joseph. The ECAC honor encompasses all 194 ECAC Division III members.

Lions Blank Albertus Magnus

Katie Franzeo (first-year, Henderson, NV) scored in the 16th minute to give Emerson College a lead it would not relinquish in an 8-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory at Albertus Magnus College. Franzeo also tallied a second goal and added two assists in the victory Jessica Lander (Fr., Casselberry, Fla.) and Alex Matthews (So., Queensbury, N.Y.) also netted two goals while Casey Whalen (Jr., Great Barrington, Mass.) and Kendra Davidson (Fr., Newport Beach, CA) scored one each. Davidson added an assist as did Rachel Lerma (Fr., Irvine, Cal.).

Wellesley Nips Lions

Wellesley College scored in the 27th minute of the game and made that margin stand as Wellesley blanked Emerson 1-0 at the Field at Rotch Playground. Emerson goal keeper Katie Hartman (Jr., Northfield, N.J.) had 11 saves in the loss.

Whalen Honored by GNAC

Casey WhalenEmerson College forward Casey Whalen (Jr., Great Barrington, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her play during the week ending September 9. In two games Whalen scored the eventual game winning goal in a 5-1 non-conference victory over Lasell College, and scored the first goal and assisted on the second in the Lions' 2-2 GNAC tie with Norwich.

Additionally, Kendra Davidson (Fr., Newport Beach, Cal.) was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll. Davidson had a goal and an assist in the Lions opener and scored the second goal in Emerson's tie with Norwich.

Lions Deadlock with Cadets

Emerson took two one goal leads in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference season opener but was unable to hold on to either as the Cadets twice rallied to force a 2-2 tie. Casey Whalen (Jr., Great Barrington, Mass.) netted the first Lion goal on an assist from Stacey Ambrose (Sr., Londonderry, N.H.) in the ninth minute. Norwich tied the game on an unassisted goal seven minutes later.

Emerson took a one goal lead into halftime after Kendra Davidson (Fr., Newport Beach, Cal.) scored on an assist from Whalen in the 32nd minute. Norwich rallied for the tie with a goal twenty minutes into the second half. Due to a severe lightning storm that struck at the end of regulation, the teams did not play overtime.

First Year Players Help Lions Take Season Opener

Katie Franzeo (first year, Henderson, NV) and Kendra Davidson (Fr., Newport Beach CA) each figured in two scoring plays as Emerson defeated Lasell College 5-1 in the season opener for the Lions. Franzeo scored the last two goals of the game (one on an assist from Davidson) while Davidson had the game's third tally. Emerson's Stacey Ambrose (Sr., Londonderry, NH) opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a blast from 25 yards on the right side. Four minutes later Casey Whalen (Jr., Great Barrington, MA) gave Emerson a two goal lead on an assist from Heather Sands (Sr., Westbrook, ME) after drawing the goalie to the left side and beating her cleanly. Lasell's Ashley Lambert closed the first half scoring on an assist from Alyssa Ferreri in the 19th minute.

Quartet Named Captains for 2006 Season

Emerson soccer coach Jason Tassinari has announced that Stacey Ambrose, Erica Coray, Alicia Lombardi and Heather Sands have been named captains of the 2006 team. Ambrose (Londonderry, NH) and Coray (Ashburn, VA) will be seniors. Coray was a first -team Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Star at midfield in 2005. Lombardi (Cranston, RI) and Sands (Westbrook, ME) will each be seniors and are expected to anchor the Lions' defense.

2005-2006

Pinto Named Academic-All District

Emerson College senior forward Amanda Pinto (Monroe, CT) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Pinto earned the honor for the second consecutive year.

Coray Leads Lions All-GNAC Selections

Junior Erica Coray (Ashburn, VA) is a first-team selection at midfield as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer All-Conference team has been selected by the conference coaches. Coray leads three Emerson players named to the team.

Second team selections were seniors Amanda Pinto (Monroe, CT) and Tina Danforth (Dedham, MA). Pinto is a forward, while Danforth is a defender.
