ROSS NAMED TO ALL-REGION TEAM

Maeghan_RossEmerson College lacrosse midfielder Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) has been named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association Division III Pilgrim Region All-Region team.  Ross, who was the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, was a second team selection, and was the only GNAC Player named to either of the first two teams.

During the 2009 season Ross set Emerson school records for goals in a season (78), assists in a season (26, tying her own record set in 2008), goals in a game (9, twice) and game winning goals (6).  She also holds Emerson career records for goals (140) and assists (52).

LIONS SEEDED SECOND IN ECAC NEW ENGLAND DIVISION III TOURNAMENT

Emerson College has secured the second seed in the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The Lions (12-2) will face seventh seeded Worcester State College (7-6) on Wednesday at 3:30pm at Rotch Field. Emerson defeated the Lancers 15-7 earlier this season.

Top seeded Roger Williams University (15-3) has a first round bye. In other Wednesday games third seeded Castleton State College will host number six seed Curry College (11-8), and fourth seeded Western New England College (10-7) will host the fifth seed, New England College (10-8).

Should the Lions defeat Worcester State, Emerson will face the winner of the Castleton-Curry Game on Saturday at 2p.m. in the semi-finals. Roger Williams will play the survivor of the WNEC-New England College match-up.

The championship game will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed on Sunday, May 10.

EMERSON TAKES GNAC TITLE WITH 18-9 VICTORY OVER NORWICH

ChampionshipBOSTON, MASS. -- Emerson College rode the six goal barrage of tournament MVP Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) to defeat Norwich University 18-9 in the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.

Top seeded Emerson jumped on top quickly, scoring the game's first three goals. Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) led off the run with an unassisted tally just 32 seconds into the game. Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) scored the first of her three goals at the 2:57 mark, and Katie Dodge (So., West Newbury, Mass.) added the Lions third marker 18 seconds later.

Kacey Abbriano deposited the Cadets' first goal just under five minutes into the game, but Emerson went on a seven goal run highlighted by three Ross scores to give the Lions a 10-1 lead.

Emerson extended the lead to 13-2 just before halftime when Norwich countered with goals by Abbriano and Ally Daniels to forge a 13-4 halftime advantage for the Lions.

Ross opened the second half scoring with an unassisted tally just 1:45 into the half and was countered by a Daniels goal. Dodge then nettted her third goal of the game followed by a Monica Carroll (So., Reading, Mass.) tally on an assist from Ross.

Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) netted her second goal of the game to give Emerson a 17-5 lead but Daniels scored three of four consecutive Norwich goals to draw the Cadets to within 17-9. Dodge finished the scoring to give Emerson its first title ever in women's lacrosse.

In addition to Ross, the All-Tournament team consisted of Peters, Dodge, Meg Robinson (Jr., Erdenheim, Pa.), and goal keeper Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) from Emerson; Daniels, Danielle Del Dotto, and Dawn McNulty from Norwich; Caitlyn Murphy and Andrea Ward of Lasell College, and Alyssa Marchant and Lauren Hagerman of St. Joseph's College.

ROSS, DeTROIA LEAD GNAC WOMEN’S LACROSSE ALL- CONFERENCE TEAM

Maeghan_RossKristen DeTroia Offensive Player of the Year Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass., left) and Defensive Player of the Year Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J., right) lead the list of eight Emerson College Women’s Lacrosse players who have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference 2009 All-Conference teams.  Emerson won both the GNAC regular season and Conference Tournaments and placed five players on the first–team.

Ross was the league leader in points scored with 68 goals and 25 assists for 93 points.   She had six game winning goals in Emerson’s 12 wins.  A midfielder, Ross had 31 ground balls and 39 draw controls. She was named the GNAC Player of the Week three times during the season.

DeTroia was the GNAC ‘s top goal keeper.  She is the only goalie in the Conference to allow less than double figures in goals against average at 7.65.  She led the GNAC with a .520 save percentage.

Gervis_Cropped Joining Ross and DeTroia on the first team were Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J., left), Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.), and Katie Dodge (So., West Newbury, Mass.).

Gervis was second on the team in scoring with 42 goals and 12 assists.  She had one game winning goal and was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 29.  She plays attack.

Katie Peters A midfielder, Peters (right) finished third on the team with 39 points on 34 goals and five assists.  Peters led the Lions with 42 ground balls and was second to Ross with 35 draw controls.

Katie Dodge Dodge (left) was the Lions’ top defensive field player, and was the fourth leading scorer on the team.  She had 25 goals and four assists while picking up 31 ground balls and 34 draw controls.

Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) and Kayla Dowd (FY, Avon, Conn.) were second team selections.  Miley’s 23 goals and 6 assists from her midfield spot were good for fifth on the team in the scoring category.  She had 15 ground balls and five draw controls.

Dowd was primarily a defensive player.  She scored four goals and added an assist. She also scooped 21 ground balls and captured 22 draw controls.

Meg Robinson (Jr., Erdenheim, Pa.) was the Emerson selection to the GNAC Sportsmanship Team.  A team co-captain, Robinson was a starting defender for the Lions.

Ross cops second consecutive player of the week honor

Maeghan_RossFor the second straight week Emerson College women's lacrosse player Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Ross was also named to the Women's lacrosse.com weekly national Division III honor roll for her play the week ending April 19. Ross was Emerson's leading scorer on the week with 12 goals on only 19 shots (.632%) including the game wining score in the battle for the GNAC regular season championship with Norwich University. Ross dominated the Norwich game with nine of Emerson's 16 goals and assisted on two others.

Ross earns GNAC Player of the Week Honor

 Emerson College women's lacrosse midfielder Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending April 12. Ross scored 10 goals and added an assist in two Lion victories, including the team's first-ever defeat of Worcester State College. Ross scored her 10 goals on only 16 shots (.625 shooting percentage), and had the eventual game wining goal in both games for Emerson. The Lions have not lost since returning from their Spring Break trip to Florida and have racked up seven consecutive wins

Gervis Named GNAC Rookie of the Week

Amy GervisEmerson College women's lacrosse player Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for her play the week ending March 29. During the week, Gervis fueled two conference wins for the Lions, scoring five goals, including four in the last t 17 minutes in a 14-11 come from behind victory over Lasell College. Later in the week against St. Joseph's College, Gervis scored three goals and assisted on the game winner.

Teammate Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll. During the week Ross scored eight goals and had three assists,and scored the game winner against St. Joseph's College. She had four goals in each game and was dominant in the face off circle.

Spartans Advance To ECAC final with 22-15 Victory over Emerson

BOSTON, MASS. - Third-seeded Castleton State College made the most of its scoring opportunities and upset second seeded Emerson College 22-15 in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Championship tournament at Emerson’s Rotch Field. The Spartans connected on 22 of 36 shots in the game.

Castleton drew first blood in the contest when Angelica Mazzola scored on an assist from Nicole Adams 3:05 into the game. Emerson came right back, knotting the game at one on a goal by Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) 53 seconds later.

Goals by Adams, Marie VanDerKar, and Mazzola regained the lead for the Spartans, but Emerson then answered with a pair of Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) goals to pull the Lions within one.

Adams again hit the back of the net off Stephanie Pearce’s third assist of the game, and Ross answered again for Emerson to keep the one goal deficit. A four goal burst by Castleton that included goals by Pearce, Mazzola and two by Adams over the next 1:52 opened a 9-4 edge.
The teams then traded three goals each to end the half with a 12-7 Castleton advantage. The last minute of play proved costly for Emerson as Ross, the Lions’ leading scorer picked up a second yellow card with 32 seconds remaining in the half and was disqualified for the remainder of the game.

Emerson’s Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) opened the second half with the first of her three goals in the period. Pearce answered just over a minute later and Stephanie Paproski gave Castleton a six goal lead. Emerson was able to pull within for goals on two different occasions, but that was as close as the Lions would come.

Emerson outshot Castleton 40-36, had a 21-11 edge in ground balls, and a 22-13 turnover margin. Castleton was dominant in draw controls, winning 18 to the Lions’ 10.

Francesca Mazzola had a huge game in net for Castleton making 18 saves. Emerson’s Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) had nine in the losing effort.

Castleton (15-3) will now host fourth-seeded Western New England College in the ECAC New England Division III Championship game on Sunday with a game time to be announced. Emerson saw its 12 game win streak snapped to finish the season at 13-3.

Emerson Knocks Off Worcester State To Advance to ECAC Semi-Finals

BOSTON, MASS. – Second seeded Emerson College (13-2)overcame a listless opening 20 minutes to defeat seventh seeded Worcester State College (7-7) 15-11 and advance to the semi-finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Championship Tournament.

With the score tied at five following a three goal Lancer comeback, the Lions answered with two goals by Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) sandwiched around a goal by Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) to take an 8-5 halftime lead. 

A Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) tally to open the second half stretched the lead to 9-5 just 29 seconds into the frame. The teams alternated goals with Shannon Feeley and Ross exchanging scores.

Goals by Carley MacIntyre and Feeley brought the Lancers to within 11-9 with 15:46 remaining in the second half. Emerson then ran off consecutive goals by Ross, Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) , and Miley to take a 14-9 lead with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Worcester attempted one final rally as Michelle Astuccio and Karla Rotondi scored inside six minutes, but Ross put the clamp on the game with a goal with 1.8 seconds remaining.

Worcester gained the early lead on a goal by Feeley 4:21 into the game. Emerson took the lead with two Katie Dodge (So., West Newbury, Mass.) markers in the next 3:07. Megan Rosborough pulled the lancers even at the 10:01 mark. Goals by Dodge. Miley and Dodge again forged a 5-2 Emerson lead just under four minutes later.

Worcester State rallied on goals by Rosborough, Astiuccio, and Amanda Cosenza to forge the 5-5 tie.

Both goalies played well with Emerson‘s Kristin DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.), and the Lancers’ Haley Erickson each having 12 saves.  Emerson outshot Worcester 33-26, and had 17 ground balls to Worcester’s 11.

Ross led Emerson in scoring with six goals. Dodge added four and Miley chipped in three. Gervis had a goal and an assist for the Lions. Feeley had four goals and an assist for the Lancers. Astuccio and Rosborough each added a pair and Cosenza had a goal and two assists.

Emerson will advance in the tournament to play third seeded Castleton State College, a 15-13 winner over sixth seeded Curry College. Game time will be 6p.m. Saturday, May 9 at Emerson’s Rotch Field.

Emerson rolls over Monks on way to GNAC Title Game

BOSTON, Mass. – Top seeded Emerson college rode the second consecutive nine goal game from Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) to eliminate St. Joseph’s College from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament by a score of 24-7. The victory for the Lions places Emerson in the championship game for the second consecutive year.

Emerson’s Katie Dodge (So., West Newbury, Mass.) started the scoring with the game’s first two goals in the first six minutes. Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) gave Emerson a three goal margin before Alyssa Marchant made the score 3-1 just over half way through the first period.

Emerson stretched the lead to 7-1 a pair of goals by Ross , Gervis’ second marker of the game and a Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) tally.

The Monks answered with goals by Abigale Pelletier, Lizzie Farley, and Marchant to make the score 7-4 with 14:25 remaining in the opening period.

Emerson then ran off seven straight goals to close the first half and scored the first three of the second before a Lauren Hagerman goal followed by Farley’s second score temporarily stopped the bleeding. Emerson was able to score four more times before Hagerman tallied her second marker of the evening. The Lions netted the last three goals of the game for the 24-7 final.

Taylor Allison made 13 saves in the Monks net, several from point blank range. Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) had 10 saves for the Lions.

Emerson will host the GNAC Championship game on Saturday at 6p.m. at Rotch Field against second seeded Norwich University in a rematch of the 2008 title game.

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) scored a game-high nine goals and added a game-best two assists, and Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) chipped in four goals to help lead Emerson to a 16-13 come-from-behind victory over Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Howard Field.

With the victory, Emerson wins the GNAC regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Norwich, will be the the No. two seed for the second straight season.

The Lions (10-2, 6-0 GNAC) trailed 10-5 at the 26:54 mark of the second half, but they scored the game’s next six goals to take an 11-10 lead. Miley scored three times during the game-changing spurt, while Ross tallied twice.

Kacey Abbriano tied the game at 11-11 at the 14:29 mark, but three unanswered goals by Ross in a span of less than three minutes gave Emerson a lead that it never relinquished.

Abbriano and Ally Daniels combined to score eight of Norwich’s nine first half goals as the Cadets took a 9-5 lead into halftime.

Daniels made it 10-5 early in the second half, but it was all Emerson from there as the Lions ended the game on an 11-3 run.

Abbriano led Norwich (7-4, 5-1 GNAC) with a team-high six goals and one assist. Daniels, meanwhile, finished with five goals. Mollie Fitzpatrick and Ashley Haviland both netted goals for the Cadets as well.

Norwich goalie Kellie Pickel made nine saves on 22 shots in the Cadets’ cage, while Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, NJ) stopped nine of the 22 shots that she faced.

Emerson held a 33-26 edge in shots, including a 25-22 edge in shots on goal.

Emerson will begin its quest for its first GNAC Tournament championship in women's lacrosse on Wednesday, April 22, when the Lions host the fourth-seeded team depending on which team wins the St. Joseph's College-Simmons College game on April 20. The GNAC playoff game on the 22nd will begin at 6p.m.

Lions Drub Simmons for second time

BOSTON, MASS. -- Emerson College got goals from seven different players as the Lions defeated Simmons College 18-5 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up at Emerson's Rotch Field. The win sets up a battle for the GNAC regular season title and top seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship Tournament as Emerson and Norwich University will meet in Northfield, Vt. on Saturday at 1:00ppm. Each team enters the regular season finale with perfect 5-0 Conference records.

Emerson scored the first goal just over a minute into the contest as Amy Gervis (Fy, Randolph, N.J.) drilled home a shot from directly in front of the crease. It was the first of Gervis' game-high five goals.

Simmons tied the game on an unassisted tally from Natalie Stever 30 seconds later, but Emerson ran off the next 10 goals to en route to a 13-2 halftime lead.

Emerson twice ran the lead to 14 goals in the second half, and the Lions scored on all five shots they took in the period.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn., April 11, 2009 – Saint Joseph College sophomore Melissa Chalk came away with six saves in her goalkeeping debut but the Blue Jays fell to Emerson College, 16-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse action in cold and rainy conditions this afternoon on campus in West Hartford.

The victory keeps the Emerson Lions perfect in GNAC play at 4-0 and 8-2 overall while the Blue Jays are left searching for their first win, dropping to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in league play.

The Lions controlled the pace throughout the contest and scored the first, and winning, goal just 41 seconds into play as midfielder Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal. Ross would go on to score two more in the half and the Lions led at the break 12-0. Midfielder Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) added two goals and three assists in the first frame and Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) also had two before the break.

The second half was equally as dominant for the Lions and midfielder Genna Opatut (FY, Freehold, N.J.) had two goals for Emerson.

Chalk turned away six shots in the loss while Emerson keeper Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) saw four shots on goal and was up to the task each time.

Emerson is scheduled host Simmons College on Thursday at Rotch Field at 5p.m. in a GNAC tilt.

Ross Powers Emerson over Worcester State

Meaghan RossWorcester, MA --- Midfielder Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) scored a game-best seven goals to help propel Emerson College to a 15-7 win over Worcester State College this evening at Coughlin Stadium in non-conference women’s lacrosse action. With the victory the Lions have now won six straight to improve their record to 7-2 while the Lancers slip to 4-3.

Six Emerson players had at least one goal as they were highlighted by Katie Peters (so., Acton, MA) who scored a hat-trick with a team-high six ground balls while classmate Katie Dodge (Jr., West Newbury, Mass.) notched a pair of tallies. Kayla Dowd (Fr., Avon, CT) also chipped in with two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.

Worcester's Brittany Jamieson recorded a team best five points with two goals and three assists while senior Shannon Feeley finished with two goals and a pair of helpers. Kim Vail picked up a game-best eight ground balls while she also caused three miscues.

Emerson controlled the pace of the first stanza as they took 10 of their 16 shots in the opening 15 minutes of the contest, but the Lions ended up with only a 3-2 lead. Ross and WSC's Abby Cosenza then traded goals before the visitors scored three unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead at the intermission.

The Lions came out of the gate scoring three free position goals to help Emerson take 10-3 edge, ten minutes into the period, before Feeley stopped the bleeding with a goal at 18:13.

Emerson then opened up a 13-4 lead after three more tallies and the visitors then substituted their bench with six minutes left in the contest. At that point the Lancers rattled off three quick goals in a span of 33 seconds to get within six (13-7), but Peters and Ross each scored to bring the lead back up to eight with two minutes left as Emerson would control the ball to cruise ahead for the victory.

After the first half both teams ended even in ground balls (11-11) and turnovers (WSC 12; EME-11), but the Lancers dominated the turf in the second half (12-7) and they forced more miscues than they committed as well (12-7).

Haley Erickson took the loss in the cage for the Lancers as she ended the evening with 10 saves while her counterpart, Kristen DeTroia (FY., Bridgewater, NJ), stopped nine of 17 shots for the Lions.

Emerson will travel to St. Joseph college (CT) on Saturday for a 1p.m. draw.

Lions Swamp Gators with 17 Goal Barrage

Katie Peters BOSTON, MASS. -- Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass., left) scored six goals and Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) added a goal and five assists as Emerson defeated Pine Manor College 17-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Emerson's Rotch Field.

Emerson set the tone early as Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) scored just 28 second into the game on an assist from Ross. Peters followed with the Lions' second goal just 37 seconds later, and Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) made the score 3-0 with only 93 ticks off the clock.

Ross added the Lions fourth goal at the 3:36 mark of the first half before Beth Deegan was able to net the Gators' lone goal of the game with just over 18 minutes remaining in the first half.

Emerson added 10 more scores before the first period ended with goals from six different players during that stretch, giving the Lions a 14-1 lead at the half.

Emerson scored three second half goals on only three shots in the second period.

Emerson dominated all the game statistics taking 29 shots to only seven for the Gators. The Lions had an 11-5 edge in ground balls and a 9-2 margin in draw controls.

Emerson will play at Salve Regina on Thursday, April 2 with a 4p.m. faceoff.

Lions Roll Over Monks, 18-5

Katie Peters BOSTON, MASS. – The Emerson College women’s lacrosse team ran its record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play, with an 18-5 victory over St. Joseph’s (Maine) College at Emerson’s Rotch Field.

The Lions got goals from nine different players including four each from Meaghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) and Katie Peters (So., Acton. Mass., above left), and three from Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, NJ). Ross also added a pair of assists while Peters and Gervis also had assists.

Emerson broke out of a 1-1 tie early in the first half with consecutive scores by Gervis, Katie Dodge (So., West Newbury, Mass.) and Peters. The Lions took a 10-3 halftime lead. Emerson took away any doubt of the outcome by scoring the first six goals of the second half.

Lauren Hagerman scored four of the Monks’ five goals. Taylor Allison made 16 saves in the St. Joseph’s net.

Emerson’s next game will be another GNAC contest against Pine Manor College at 5p.m. Wednesday, April 1.

Lion Rally Snuffs Lasers

NEWTON, MASS -- Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) scored four goals, including the game-winning goal, in the final fifteen minutes of the women’s lacrosse contest today at Grellier Field between Lasell College and Emerson College, as the Lions snuck away with a 14-11 win. The Lions improve to 4-2 this season, and 1-0 in the conference, and Lasell falls to 3-4, and evens out at 1-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Emerson attacked first as Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) rocketed in the first goal just 1:28 into the contest off a pass from Maeghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.). Jenna Stint answered for Lasell with a diving goal from a cross-crease pass from Caitlyn Murphy . Lexi Giatrelis put Lasell on top with a subsequent goal just one minute later. Midway through the first half, the Lions had even the score back to 2-all with a mark by Ross, who traveled from before midfield to score unassisted.

The teams continued to play evenly matched throughout the remaining period with each team scoring three more goals apiece, including one each on a penalty shot. Giatrelis put in a free position shot while the Lasers were man-up with less than fifteen minutes to play in the half. Ross replied with another unassisted mark just 55 seconds later. Tina Canavan fought through defensive traffic to shoot in the lower right corner past the Lions goalkeeper Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) for Lasell’s fourth, followed by Laura Miley (So., Cranston, R.I.) on a penalty shot for Emerson, and another Ross tally. Giatrelis shot down field to find Murphy in front of Emerson’s net at 7:02, who notched the final goal of the half, evening the score back out to 5-5.

Lasell broke out with two quick goals to take a 7-5 advantage after the break. However, Gervis closed the gap back within one with her first score of the game. The Lasers answered with three more goals to take the biggest lead of the game 10-6. Erika McGrath scored once and Murphy scored the other two Lasell goals during that time.

It was at the 17 minute mark that Emerson staged their comeback. Monica Carroll (So., Reading, Mass.) and Gervis each scored twice in a three minute span to tie the game once again at ten. Murphy’s made her way through a crowd to score the Lasers’ final goal of the game, and put them up again 11-10. However, Emerson’s Katie Dodge (So., West Newbury, Mass.) tied up the game for the last time, and Gervis created an isolation to score the game winner, with 7:59 left.

Emerson outshot Lasell by a narrow 36-30 margin, and also held a slight advantage in ground balls, 19-18. Lasell had an edge in draw controls, winning 15 to Emerson’s 12, with Canavan and Meredith Hessler each controlling four.

Murphy efforts totaled six points, with five goals and an assist. Giatrelis and Stitt each added two goals. Defensively, Cassandra Haase put in a tremendous effort, causing five turnovers and also gathering 6 ground balls. Kristin Coderre picked up 16 saves in the net for the Lasers.

For the visitors, in addition to Gervis’ five goals, Ross added five points with four goals and an assist. DeTroia collects the win making 12 saves in the contest.

Emerson will host St. Joseph's College at noon on Saturday in another GNAC contest.

Amy Gervais (FY, Randolph, N.J.) led the way for the Lions with four goals and an assist, while Meaghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass,) added two goals and three assists. Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) also had a hat trick for Emerson.

The Lions built a 12-2 halftime edge in the game and coasted through the second half against Anna Maria's first year program. Katie Schebel had both the Amcats' goals.

The Lions will open their Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday at 3:30p.m. at Lasell College.

Emerson defeats Simmons in Sharks First Game Ever

BOSTON, MASS. – Emerson College spoiled Simmons College debut as an NCAA Division III women’s Lacrosse team with a 13-2 defeat at Emerson’s Rotch Field. The Lions built an 11-1 halftime lead and coasted through the second half to pick up their second win of the season against two defeats.

Amy Gervis (FY, Randolph, N.J.) led Emerson in with four goals, while Meaghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) tallied three goals and added a pair of assists. Lee Sutherland scored the first goal in Simons history at with 27:32 remaining in the first half on a free position shot. Natalie West had the other goal with 12:25 left in the contest. Amanda Weaver had 11 saves in the Sharks’ goal.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. -- The Vassar women's lacrosse team jumped out to 5-0 lead in the first 7:16 of the contest, led by a pair of goals and an assist by Katama Martellucci and a pair of assists from Christine Eaccarino.

Emerson's Meaghan Ross (So., Wrentham, Mass.) scored the first of her game-high six goals to cut into the Brewers' lead, but Vassar added two more to push the margin up to six at 7-1. Again Ross scored to cut the deficit, and again Vassar scored twice in quick succession. Ross scored her third goal to answer back, and again the Brewers scored twice to take an 11-3 lead. A goal by Emerson's Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) stopped the run, and the teams took a Vassar lead of 11-4 into the break.

The two teams traded goals for the opening minutes of the second half with the Brewers moving out to a 14-6 lead before Emerson forged a four-goal run, with Ross marking two of the goals, to pull within four at 14-10 lead with 4:13 to play. Eaccarino added a late goal for the final score of 15-10.

Emerson's Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) made 13 saves for the Lions, while 12 different players scored for Vassar in the contest.

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. -- After Emerson took a 2-0 lead, the teams basically traded goals for an 8-8 halftime. Emerson took another 2 goal lead with the first two goals of the 2nd half, but three goals by Curry gave the Colonels a 1-goal lead.

After Emerson tied the score at 11-11 at the 38:44 mark, Curry's Nikki MacKay was suspended from the rest of the game for a second yellow card. The Lions took a 1-goal lead on a Katie Peters (So., Acton, Mass.) goal, and a minute later Curry's Rachel Robichaud was assessed a second yellow card. The Colonels then scored four consecutive goals, including two by Hansbury, to take a three-goal lead, their largest of the game.

The teams traded goals again, and Curry had a chance to increase the lead to two with an 8-meter attempt, but the shot went wide and Emerson rallied to score two goals in the final 90 seconds, including a goal by Amy Gervis (FY,Randolph, N.J.), her eighth of the game, with four seconds left in regulation to tie the game. Curry won all four draw controls in the overtime period and held on for the 20-18 win. Emerson's Kristen DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.) made 20 saves in the contest to keep the Lions close all game.

LIONS PLACE FIVE ON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM, BLANCHARD ALSO HONORED

Laura Miley Jess Kalikow Emerson College’s first place finish in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular season caught the attention of the Conference coaches as five Lions have been named to the All-Conference teams, and coach Mike Blanchard has been selected co-coach of the year.

Laura Miley (FY, Cranston, R.I., left) and Jess Kalikow (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass., right) were each named to the first team at attack.  Miley was a three-time GNAC Rookie of the week during the season.  Miley was the team’s second leading scorer with 52 goals and four assists.  Kalikow tied for third on the team in scoring with 49 points on 38 goals and 11 assists.  Both Kalikow and Miley were named to the GNAC Championship All-Tournament team as well.

Maeghan Ross Second team selections were Maeghan Ross (FY, Wrentham, Mass., right) and Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass., left) at midfield Katie Peters and defender Devon Turner (So., Philadelphia, Pa., lower right).  Ross was the team’s leading scorer with a school record 62 goals and 26 assists.  Peters tied with Kalikow for third on the team in scoring with 49 points on 43 goals and six assists. She scored a school record 10 goals in an early season victory over Devon Turner Westfield State College.   Turner was the Lions’ top defender and was regularly assigned to cover the opposition’s most potent offensive player. She was a GNAC Championship All-Tournament team selection.

Kristi WallesKristi Walles (Sr., Merrimack, N.H., left) was selected to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team for Women’s Lacrosse.  Walles was a starting attack throughout the year and scored seven goals with an assist.

Michael BlanchardBlanchard  (right) was co-coach of the year with Norwich University’s Tyler Renaud.  In his two seasons at the helm, the Lions have been 6-6 in 2007 and 13-4 in 2008.  The seven win improvement from one season to the next is the third highest in the history of NCAA women’s lacrosse.


Norwich Rides Strong Second Half to GNAC Title

Boston, Mass. (4/26/08) -- Second-seeded Norwich University (11-4) scored the first five goals of the second half to rally from a two goal halftime deficit and defeat top seeded Emerson College (13-4) 10-8 in the first ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Game.

The first half was a see-saw battle as Emerson opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by Jess Kalikow (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) 7:06 into the game. The Cadets answered with the next three goals over the next 4:07 on unassisted markers by Ally Daniels (So., Concord, N.H.), Ashley Haviland (Sr., Manchester, Vt.) and Kathleen Hennessey (So., Essex Junction, Vt.). Kalikow pulled the Lions to within one, and Laura Miles scored the first of her tow goals to even up the score.

Kristi Walles (Sr., Merrimack, N.H.) gave the Lions the lead at the 16:35 mark on an assist by Kalikow, but Daniels knotted the score just over seven minutes later, before Jessica Allmer (FY, Bellport, N.Y.) gave the Cadets a 5-4 lead on a free position shot.

Norwich dominated the second half scoring the first goal of the stanza on a free position shot by Haviland just 1:20 into the half. Daniels then scored unassisted, and on a free position shot to give Norwich an 8-7 lead. Goals by Hennessey on an assist by Daniels, and Haviland on a free position shot gave the Cadets a 10-7 lead with 12:57 remaining. Miley brought Emerson to within a pair on an unassisted tally with 6:38 left, but the Lions could pull no closer.

Daniels was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, and teammates Kellie Pickel, Dawn McNulty, Hennessey, and Katie Magnus were named to the All-Tournament team. Kalikow, Miley and Devon Turner were All-Tournament selections for Emerson. Alyssa Marchant and Lauren Hagerman from St. Joseph's College, and Tina Canavan and Caitlyn Murphy of Lasell College rounded out the team.

Emerson Sweeps Into GNAC Final With 14-7 Win Over St. Joe’s

Boston, Mass. (4/23/08) – Emerson College (13-3) stormed out to an 11-1 first half lead and cruised to victory over St. Joseph’s College (5-6) in the semi-final round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The top seeded Lions will host second seeded Norwich University in the Finals at 3:30pm on Saturday, April 26.

Laura Miley (FYU, Cranston, R.I.) led Emerson with six goals, followed by Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass.) with four markers. Lauren Hagerman (So, Scarborough, Maine) notched a hat trick for St. Joe’s.

Monks’ goalkeeper Chynna Nichols (FY, Achusnet, Mass.) made 17 stops, while Meredith Tufts stopped 9 shots for Emerson.

Lions Capture GNAC Top Seed With 14-10 Victory Over Lasell

Boston, Mass. (4/19/08) - Emerson College rode multiple goal performances from Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass.), Maeghan Ross (FY, Wrentham, Mass.), and Laura Miley (FY, Cranston, R.I.) to a 14-10 victory over Lasell College. The win for Emerson (12-3, 5-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) clinches the top seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship Tournament.

Miley opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the contest with an unassisted goal. Lasell's Christina Canavan knotted the contest at 1-1 on a free position shot just 14 seconds later. Ross answered with the first of her four goals at the 28:22 mark, but Canavan responded with an unassisted goal a minute and a half later to tie the game at 2-2.

Emerson then scored the next six goals to run out to an 8-2 lead. Peters notched four of the goals with two coming on assists from Ross. Ross and Miley each added one of their own during the streak.

Lasell fought back scoring six of the next seven goals as Canavan tallied five of the goals before the end of the half pulling the Lasers to within 9-8. Canavan's last goal came with just 14 ticks remaining on an assist from Kendall Barreio.

A Peters goal at 18:35 opened the second half scoring and gave the Lions a 10-8 lead. Miley then scored at 12:50 to increase the margin to a three-goal cushion. A free position goal by Erika McGrath 27 seconds later kept Lasell within striking distance, but two unassisted goals from Ross and Peters' sixth marker of the afternoon over the course of the next five minutes secured the win.

Emerson captured the first ever GNAC regular season crown with the win and will host fourth seeded St. Joseph's (ME) College in the first round of the GNAC Championship Tournament on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00pm. The loss drops Lasell (7-7, 3-2 GNAC) to the third seed and the Lasers are scheduled to travel to second seeded Norwich University Wednesday at a time to be announced. The Championship Game will be played at the site of the top remaining seen on Saturday, April 26.

Emerson Edges Norwich for Top Spot in GNAC Women's Lacrosse

Boston, Mass (4/13/08) - Meaghan Ross (FY., Wrentham, Mass.) scored her third goal of the game with 3:59 left to cap a three-goal rally and give Emerson College (11-3, 4-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) a 13-12 victory over Norwich University (6-4, 2-1 GNAC). The victory keeps Emerson in first place in the Conference and sets up a battle for the top seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship Tournament when Emerson hosts Lasell next Saturday at 12:30.

Ross' goal came after two goals by the Lions' Laura Miley (FY, Cranston, R.I.) rallied Emerson from a 12-10 deficit. Miley scored unassisted with 4:59 remaining and then tallied a free-position shot 29 seconds later.

Norwich jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with Kathleen Hennessey (So., Essex Junction, Vt.) tallying an unassisted goal just 19 seconds into the game. Hennessey scored again just over two and a half minutes later, and Ashley Haviland (Sr., Manchester, Vt.) game the Cadets a three goal cushion just 3:53 into the game. Two Jess Kalikow (Sr., Brighton, Mass.) goals brought Emerson to with one, but Jessica Allmer (FY, Bellport, N.Y.) increased the lead to 4-2 at the 20:52 mark. The Lions knotted the score on goals by Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass.) and Kalikow, but Haviland gave the Cadets a 5-4 lead at the 9:52 mark. Miley knotted the score just 33 ticks before halftime.

Emerson scored the first two goals of the second half with Meaghan Ross and Miley finding the back of the net. The Cadets roared back with four straight goals to take a 9-7 lead. Miley and Ally Daniels (So., Concord, N.H.) traded goals before Peters hit a free position shot and ross tallied an unassisted marker at the 9:46 mark.

Goals by Haviland and Hennessey powered Norwich to a 12-10 lead with 8:34 remaining in the game before Emerson's final rally earned the victory for the Lions.

Lions Fall to Lancers on Late Goal, 10-9

Boston, Mass. (3/27/08) - Angela Johnson scored on an open net free-position goal with 8.8 seconds remaining in to give Worcester State College (2-0) a 10-9 victory over Emerson College (6-3) in a non-conference women's lacrosse game.

Emerson had tied the score with 26.2 seconds left on an unassisted goal by Meaghan Ross (FY, Wrentham, Mass.) after Ross pulled the Lions to within one with an unassisted tally with 36.2 ticks left on the clock. The Lions had fallen behind 9-7 at the 3:02 mark when Worcester's Shannon Feeley hit a free-position goal.

The game was close throughout with Emerson taking early leads of 2-0 and 3-1. Worcester closed the first half with five consecutive goals, four by Megan Rosborough , for a 6-3 lead that was the largest of the contest.

Emerson pulled within 6-5 on goals by Jess Kalikow (So., Brookline, Mass.) on an assist by Ross, and a Laura Miley (FY., Cranston, R.I.) unassisted marker with just over two minutes expired in the second half. The team then traded goals with Johnson, Abby Cosenza , and Feeley scoring, while Emerson countered with goals from Katie Peters (FY., Acton, Mass.) and Ross setting up the last minute fireworks.

Worcester goal keeper Lyndsey Nunes had a great night in the net making 14 saves, including stopping four of eight free-position goals.

Peters' 10th Goal Downs Owls in Overtime, 14-13

Katie PetersWESTFIELD, Mass. – Midfielder Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass., left) scored 10 goals to lead Emerson College to a 14-13 overtime victory over Westfield State in women’s lacrosse on Wednesday evening, March 19.

Emerson upped its record to 5-2 while it was the season opener for Westfield State.

Westfield State trailed 10-6 at halftime before it mounted a comeback led by sophomore Ally Brown. Brown scored six goals, including the game-tying goal and go-ahead goals that gave the Owls a 13-12 lead with 1:59 remaining in regulation. Brown was the recipient of a beautiful pass from junior Rachel Costa on the go-ahead goal.

But 15 seconds later Peters tied the score to send the game into overtime. Peters then scored the game-winning goal on an unassisted tally 54 seconds into the six-minute overtime stanza.

Westfield had control of the ball at the end of regulation and overtime but was unable to convert.

Emerson’s other multiple goal scorer was Jessie Kalikow (So., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) with two goals. Westfield freshman midfielder Laura Chiricosta had four goals and an assist.

Emerson goalie Sarah Ebbott (Sr., Manchester, Vt.) recorded nine saves and Westfield goalie Gina Simonetti had eight stops.

Lions Score Early, Often In 24-3 Victory Over Elms

Boston, Mass. (3/17/08) - Emerson College (4-2) scored the game's first goal only 39 seconds into the contest and went on to defeat Elms College (0-1) 24-3 in a non-conference women's lacrosse match-up.

Monica Carroll (FY., Reading, Mass.) opened the scoring for Emerson with the first of her three goals on the afternoon off an assist by Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass.). Caitlin Childs evened the score for the Blazers less than two minutes later with an unassisted tally. Emerson scored the next fourteen goals of the first half to take a 15-1 lead into halftime.

The second half was more of the same as the Lions tallied three more times before Childs drove home her second unassisted tally of the contest. The teams then traded goals before the Lions converted the game's final five scores.

Maeghan Ross (FY., Wrentham , Mass.) led Emerson with five goals and five assists. Laura Miley (FY, Cranston, R.I.), also had five goals and added an assist. Childs had all three Blazer goals.

Spartans lose season opener 20-12 to Emerson

Milford, NH – Maeghan Ross led the Emerson Lions with eight goals as the Lions downed Castleton 20-12. Jessie Kalikow and Laura Miley added four goals apiece with contributions coming from Katie Dodge, Monica Carroll, and Katie Peters as well. Emerson improves to 3-2 with the win.

Castleton was led by Maria VanDerKar’s four goals. Stephanie Pearce, Nicole Adams, Nicole Bouchard, and Aimee Goulette got in the scoring column for the Spartans as well in the losing effort.

The teams were tied at three halfway through the first period when the Lions scored six goals to take a 9-6 lead at halftime. Emerson scored five unanswered goals twice in the second half to squash the attempted comeback by the Spartans. Castleton was down by the score of 15-11 with under eight minutes to play before Maeghan Ross scored three of her goals in the next six minutes of play to put the Spartans away for good.

Meredith Tufts made 14 saves in the win for Emerson. Meredith Pope made four first half saves in the losing effort. Francesca Mazzola relieved Pope in the second half, making six saves in trying to keep the Spartans in the game.

Emerson returns home March 17 when the Lions host Elms at 5:30 pm.

Monarchs Fall to Emerson 16-9

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — It was a close game early, but Emerson took over late with a seven goal run to win 16-9. Methodist moves to 2-5 on the season while Emerson improves to 2-1 overall.

Emerson scored the first goal of the game, but Methodist responded with a goal from Diane Doroftei. The Lions went ahead by two, but Christina Layson tallied a goal and then Doroftei fed Andrea DiStefano to tie the game at three. Emerson came back with two goals, and Layson cut the lead to one with an unassisted goal. The Lions scored once more to take the 6-4 lead at halftime.

DiStefano jump started the second half with two goals for the Monarchs, tying the game at six. Emerson countered with two goals of their own but Methodist's Ann Ferrara scored on the assist from Doroftei. Emerson took over with a seven goal run through the second half before Krystal Poirier could get one for the Monarchs. Ferrara scored again to move within six, but the Lions registered a final goal to take the 16-9 win.

EMERSON RIDES HOT OFFENSE TO COOL YELLOWJACKETS, 17-9

Boston, Mass. (3/7/08) – Emerson College (1-1) got multiple goals from five different players as the Lions defeated American International College (0-1) 17-9 in a non-conference women’s lacrosse match-up.

The Lions were led by six goals by Laure Miley (FY., Cranston, R.I.) who tallied six markers, and Jessie Kalikow (So., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) who notched four goals and added three assists.

AIC actually held leads of 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Danielle Hodecker , and 2-1 when Kara Kirkland was assisted by Hodecker. Emerson knotted the score at 2-2 when Monica Carroll (FY, Reading, Mass.) scored the first of her two goals. Emerson built a 4-2 advantage on goals by Kristi Walles (Sr. Merrimack, N.H.) and Miley’s first goal. A second goal by Kirkland pulled the Yellowjackets to within one, but Emerson ran off the next five goals, including three by Miley, to give the Lions a 9-3 lead. In addition to Miley and Kalikow, Walles, Carroll, and Katie Peters (FY, Acton, Mass.) each had a pair of goals. Katie Dodge (FY, West Newbury, Mass) also had a goal for the Lions. Kirkland had four goals for AIC. Emerson goalkeeper Meredith Tufts ( FY, Milton, MA) turned away 12 shots while AIC’s Gina Gallo tallied 10 stops.

Five Hat Tricks Push Wheaton Past Emerson in Season Opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Five different players netted hat tricks for the Wheaton College (1-0) women's lacrosse team, as the Lyons opened the season with a 19-4 victory over Emerson College (0-1) on Thursday night under the lights at Bryant University's Turf Field Complex. Wheaton has won four of its past five season openers and took the first meeting between the teams during what was also Emerson's first contest of the spring.

During the Lyons' first opener played in New England since 2003, Wheaton tallied the first two goals of the contest by the 6:08 mark of the first half. Emerson Kristi Walles (Sr., Merrimack, N.H.) made it a 2-1 game at 8:47, but the Blue and White rattled off the next 10 goals of the contest to take a commanding 12-1 advantage, including 11-1 at halftime. Senior Meredith Hurd had three goals and an assist during the 10-0 run, while freshman Tess Meyer tallied two goals and two helpers.

After Emerson received two straight goals from freshman Maeghan Ross (Wrentham, Mass.) during a 3:12 span to make it 12-3 with 18:40 remaining in regulation, Wheaton scored seven of the final eight goals, including three free-position markers. Freshman Kathryn Sudbey tallied twice during the match-ending 7-1 run.

First-year Emma Doyle notched a game-high four goals, Meyer finished with three goals and three assists, and Sudbey had three tallies, as this marked the fifth consecutive season at least one freshman notched a hat trick during the season opener. Hurd recorded three goals and two assists, as she moved into fourth place in Wheaton history for career goals (123) and into seventh for points (136).

Junior Madeline Williams also finished with three markers, while classmate Caitlin Grant and sophomore Brittany King recorded one goal and one assist apiece. Senior Sara Dimick tallied during her first contest since 2006, as she missed last season while studying abroad. In goal, freshman Annalisa Carson made four saves in a little more than one half of work for the win, while classmate Marianna Marcellino stopped one second-half shot.

Ross led Emerson with two tallies, while sophomore Meredith Tufts (Milton, Mass.) turned aside 16 Wheaton shots between the pipes.

Emerson next plays Friday, March 7 at 4:00pm against American International College at Rotch Field.
