FUREY's focus leads Emerson harriers

Cross Country Team BOSTON - It is great running weather for a mid-October Friday in the 2008 fall season. Head Coach John Furey shouts words of encouragement to the Emerson team at Franklin Park, considered the best cross country course in the state, as they maintain a solid group in their first lap. This is the Emmanuel College Saints Cross Country Invitational. Maintaining a solid pack of runners this early in the race is important. It is good for the morale of the team, and disheartening for competitors. It is in line with Furey’s coaching strategy.

Furey began working at Fitcorp a fitness center in Boston 24 years ago. He brings a unique understanding of personal fitness to the table as a coach.  “I consistently stress hard work, preventative strategies, rest, foam roll, soft surface running and cross training to minimize impact, focusing on corrective and strength exercises.”

Furey maintains a strategy of injury free running and muscular skeletal integrity. With laser focus on strength and wellness training, this top tier health and fitness trainer integrates theoretical and practical knowledge into his overall coaching method. Furey has been coaching for 26 years. “If you run hard all the time, you will get injured, mentally exhausted or both.”

On a theoretical level he applies a master’s degree from Bridgewater State College, reinforced with constant study and reading. On a practical level he applies coaching stratagem from three championship seasons at Emerson, rooted in years of running experience. On a tactical level, where strategy meets reality, this has worked particularly well for the women’s team.

Team Captain Alleigh Marre appreciates the strategy, “Running is an individual sport and requires a lot of individual commitment.” Marre is recovering from an injury currently. The attention to detail from her coach in this case is particularly relevant. “He has always provided each of us with work outs and suggestions for work outs based on our own personal needs and abilities.”

The women have the most wins of any team at Emerson this season. Today the women add a few W’s to the record. They finish fourth out of 15 teams. Three of their runners are in the top 30 out of 115. Broken into a duel meet record the stats are quite impressive. The women are 46 and 21.

The men finish eighth out of 15. Team Co-captain Matt Sell, a senior, is not happy with the results. His team ran well, maintaining the pack integrity deep into the course, until the breakaways began. The team can recover. The strategy will keep them limber, and injury free, to whatever degree possible. Overall the day is a success. The runners from each team are guided, like aircraft to a carrier, into the chutes at the finish line. Their control tower is Head Coach John Furey’s vehement voice of encouragement.
