Emerson head coach Jared Scarpaci was named the Conference's Coach of the Year for the first time in his seven year tenure with the team. Scarpaci led the team to a 12-8 overall record and the title game of the GNAC Championship Tournament. The Lions won 10 of their last 13 games after starting the season with a 1-5 record.

Lions Lose 2-1 Heartbreaker in GNAC Championship

Match boxscore

From St. Joseph's College Sports Information

STANDISH, ME – #1 Saint Joseph’s College (14-7-1, 7-2 GNAC) defeated #6 Emerson College (12-8, 5-4 GNAC), 2-1, in the 2009 GNAC Men’s Soccer Championship at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon. Jack LaFreniere notched both SJC goals, less than five minutes apart in the second half, to help the Monks capture their first GNAC title. With the win, St. Joe’s collects an automatic berth, awarded to the GNAC winner, into the NCAA DIII Tournament, which begins this week. The trip to the NCAA’s will be the first in men’s soccer program history. NCAA tourney seedings will be announced on Monday morning.

GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player Will Pike ’10 made three stops in net for the Monks, while his counterpart, Emerson keeper Noah Price ’12 (Apex, NC), registered seven saves in a losing effort.

St. Joe’s dominated play for the majority of the match, but the game stood at a scoreless deadlock after 70 minutes of play despite the fact that the Monks had a handful of excellent opportunities.

LaFreniere put the Monks on the board at the 71:39 mark with a tremendous individual effort. Andre Cushing fed the ball to the rookie forward, who headed the ball to himself in traffic and beat Price with a ball into the top of the net.

LaFreniere struck again less than five minutes later with his second tally of the game and fourth of the GNAC Tournament. This time the flashy freshman managed to get past the defense and gain control of a bounding ball as Price left the net to challenge. As the ball was about to reach Price, LaFreniere step-kicked the ball, which created an irregular bounce that fooled the Emerson keeper, and wound up following the bouncing sphere into the net with his arms spread wide knowing that he had put his team up by two goals.

The two-score cushion seemed impossible for the visitors to surmount, but a goal from Zach Sayward ’10 (Franklin, MA), which was scored off a free kick, in the 82nd minute provided unwanted drama for the Royal Blue faithful. Sayward unleashed a low, sinking kick directly at Pike, who appeared to make the easy save, but the ball trickled in behind him, cutting the SJC lead in half.

The Lions were unable to mount a serious threat after the Sayward tally, as Pike easily stopped both shots on goal in the final six minutes of play.

The game began with both sides getting a feel for the other, as is typical, but after about 15 minutes the action began and the Monks began pouring on the pressure. In the 24th minute, Doug MacCallum belted a curving kick just over the crossbar and, eight minutes later, LaFreniere battled his way through the Lions defense but his kick was denied with a nice stop by Price. An offsides call with 20 second remaining in the opening half revoked an apparent SJC goal. Overall, Saint Joseph’s outshot Emerson, 5-1 in the first half.

The second stanza began in a similar manner to the way the first ended, as the Royal Blue controlled play and recorded numerous chances, with the common theme being “wide left,” to grab the lead. Seven minutes in, Robins booted a laser that sailed just wide to the left. MacCallum missed left two minutes later to the left and an attempt by Michael Sanfilippo off a great corner from Robins and quick pass from MacCallum, in the 58th minute missed left.

Price denied MacCallum, who sent a header toward the net off a long Sanfilippo pass, with a great diving save to his right in the 60th minute. MacCallum appeared to score a minute later after collecting a rebound off a Robins header and Price save, but an offsides call kept the match scoreless. The wait for the game’s first goal ended 12 minutes later when LaFreniere’s effort resulted in a Saint Joseph’s goal.

St. Joe’s outshot Emerson 10-6 in the second half and held a 15-7 lead in shots overall. The Monks held a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks in the triumph.

Lions Pull Second Upset of Tournament to Advance to Finals

From Lasell College Sports Information

Game boxscore

Newton, Mass.- Sixth seeded Emerson College continues on a five game winning streak as they upset the number two seed Lasell College in the semi-finals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Field.

The first fifteen minutes passed in the game without a shot from either side.  Lasell eventually got off three attempts before Emerson even had one, but it was just one shot that the Lions needed to take the lead.

With 24 minutes elapsed in the contest, Emerson’s freshman forward Chris Nenshati (Swampscott, Mass.) took the Lion’s first shot of the game.  Nenshati made his way through three Lasell defenders starting just outside the midfield circle, coaxing goalkeeper Julian Dutton to challenge him for the ball. As Dutton made an attempt to dive for the ball, Nenshati pitched a high shot over the keeper's head, putting the Lions ahead, 1-0.

Ten minutes later, the Lions were awarded a direct kick from 30 yards out after a Lasell foul. Casey Shane (New York, N.Y.) curled a perfect pass to Ken Nikravesh (Geneva, Switzerland) who nailed a 19 yard goal to the high right corner of Lasell’s net, giving the visitors a two goal advantage.

The hosts had three times as many shot opportunities as Emerson in the first half, but the Lasers were only on target with three of those chances. Lion goalkeeper Noah Price (Apex, N.C.) turned away each of those attempts, creating a first half shutout.

The Lasers kept the ball in Lion territory for most of the second half, though they generated only five shots in the 45 minutes. With just 2:41 left in the match, Lasell’s senior midfielder Shane Vinnicombe initiated a pass from the sideline to freshman forward Eric Fournier who was two steps off of the midfield circle. Fournier took a chance by launching the long distance shot, which paid off, marking the Lasers only goal of the contest.

Price had a strong day in net for Emerson, making four saves, en route to the GNAC semi-final victory.  The Lions (12-7-0) will face top seeded St. Joseph’s College of Maine on Saturday, November 7 in the GNAC Championship, in Standish, Maine. Game time is 1:00pm.

Lions Upset Suffolk to Advance in GNAC Tournament

From Suffolk University Sports Information

Game boxscore

Somerville, MA – Cooler heads prevailed as the sixth-seeded Emerson College Lions (11-7) pulled off an upset over the third-seeded Suffolk University Rams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals. Both teams had to battle through tough windy elements, but the Lions capitalized outlasting the Rams by a 1-0 score.

Emerson scored the game’s lone goal on a controversial call. After a throw-in by the Lions’ Casey Shane (New York, NY), the ball appeared to have deflected off a Rams’ player that would have negated the goal, but the referee ruled it was headed in by sophomore Cory Walls (Scituate, MA). The goal was Walls’ third of the season.

The Rams were forced to play the final 23-minutes of the game short-handed as their leading scorer sophomore Danny Lloyd was issued a red-card for a verbal altercation with the referee.

Frustrations for the Rams mounted from early in the first half as the Rams missed three scoring opportunities. Freshman Ben Rollins had the Rams’ first chance as he picked up a rebound off of a shot from senior Bernhard Lotterer, but Rollins’ shot hit off the left side post of the goal. Lloyd had another Suffolk chance after an Emerson foul with 9 minutes remaining in the first half. On the free kick, Lloyd kicked in a laser that hit the top crossbar on the Lions’ goal. Then three minutes later, Lotterer had his shot blocked by Emerson goalkeeper Noah Price (Apex, NC), but the gusty wind pushed the ball just far enough from a streaking Rollins cutting off his angle to the goal and another missed scoring opportunity for the Rams.

Price made seven saves in the game for Emerson picking up his fifth win of the season and second shutout of the year.

Tensions continued to mount in the game’s final 15 minutes as six yellow cards were issued between both teams, forcing the Rams to play 11-on-9 in the final thirty-seconds of regulation.

Junior Jack DeJesus made seven saves in net during the hard-luck loss.

With the win the Lions will now advance to the GNAC Semi-Finals on Tuesday as they take on # 2 seed Lasell College. The Lasers defeated Mount Ida College, 6-0 on Saturday to advance.

Emerson Ends Regular Season by Pitching Shutout

Game Boxscore

from Newbury College Sports Information

The Newbury College men’s soccer team dropped a non-conference match today to visiting Emerson College by a score of 5-0. Chris Nenshati (Swampscott, Mass.) led the Lions with two goals while teammate Mike Giles (Wakefield, R.I.) added one goal and one assist.

The first half was dominated by the victors as they outshot the Nighthawks 9-1. Giles found the back of the net just 8:25 into the game as junior Sean Batson (Boulder, Colo.) found him on the tail end of a great run down field. Eric Dabdoub (Monterrey, Mexico) would score off a feed from Giles to bring the lead to 2-0 at the break.

Newbury would turn up the intensity to start the second half, taking eight shots over the final 45 minutes. The Lions responded, however, taking 16 shots in the second half alone. Brian Doyle (Mahwah, N.J.) scored at 47:20 and Nenshati sealed the victory with two back-to-back goals at 68:44 and 81:57.

Nighthawk goalkeeper William McNally recorded 13 saves on the afternoon. Emerson's Noah Price (Apex, N.C.) and Dan Pelegero (Woodinville, Wash.) combined for the Lion shutout.  Emerson will begin the post-season as the Lions will travel to Albertus Magnus college on Saturday for a first round Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament game.

Late Rally Gives Lions 3-2 win

Game boxscore

BOSTON, Mass. – Eric Dabdoub (So., Monterrey, Mexico) took a pass from Casey Shane (Sr., New York, N.Y.) and scored on a breakaway straight down the middle of the field in the 87th minute as Emerson College (9-7-0, 5-4-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) rallied to defeat Mount Ida College 3-2 at Emerson’s Rotch Field.

The Lions came back from a 2-1 deficit with two goals in the final 5:27 as Shane scored the tying goal on an unassisted tally that went from the right side to the lower left corner.

Emerson dominated the first half, but could manage only a 1-0 lead at the break. Josh Watkinson (Sr., Rochester, N.H.) drove home a shot from the right side to the top left corner on an assist by Cory Walls (So., Scituate, Mass.) in the 24th minute. The Emerson defense dominated the Mustangs and did not allow a shot in the stanza.

The second half proved a different story as Mount Ida shot early and often. The Mustangs got the tying goal from Will Daniels on a cross from the right side by Michael Almeida in the 63rd minute. The Mustangs took the lead less than seven minutes later when Daniels drove a ball from the left center to the lower right corner of the cage to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.

Both teams had multiple chances as the game progressed with strong goal play by each team. Mount Ida’s Steven Enright made eight saves and Emerson’s Noah Price (So., Apex, N.C.) stopped five Mustang second half shots.

Emerson out shot Mount Ida 20-11 in the game including 10-0 in the first half. The Lions had six corner kicks to Mount Ida’s three, and Emerson was offside six times to none for the Mustangs.

Lions Drop 1-0 Heartbreaker to Albertus

Game boxscore

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Albertus Magnus College scored the lone goal of the game off a throw in with less than 12 minutes remaining and defeated Emerson College 1-0 in a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest for both teams.

The Falcons' goal was credited to Alphonse Butticci and resulted from a throw in that deflected off an Emerson player. It was the only ball that eluded Emerson keeper Noah Price (So., Apex, N.C.) the entire game.

Emerson had the best of the offensive play firing 19 shots at the Falcon net to just 10 for Albertus.. Falcon goal keeper Gerald O'Connor proved up to the task, however as he made a dozen saves, including nine in the second half. Price had seven stops in the contest.

The loss drops Emerson from the all important fourth spot in the Conference standings that would result in a home playoff game, to fifth, one spot behind Albertus Magnus. Should the two teams finish tied at the end of the season, the Falcons would win the tie-breaker by virtue of the head to head victory.

Emerson next plays a non-conference contest at UMass Boston on Wednesday at 3:30pm.

Emerson had taken a 1-0 halftime lead when Emmanuel scored an own goal in the 32nd minute. A defender attempted to head the ball away from the goal, but the ball ricocheted just over the outstretched hands of Saint goal keeper Carlos Perez.

BOSTON, Mass. – Phil Svitek (Sr., Branford, Conn.) drilled a shot from the middle of the restraining line in the 18 yard box to the lower left corner of the net to give Emerson college a 2-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Rivier College. Svitek’s shot came in the 73rd minute and snapped a four match losing streak for the Lions.

Emerson took the early lead in the game when Mike Giles (Jr., Wakefield, R.I.) converted a pass from Casey Shane (Sr., New York, N.Y.) in the 13th minute. Giles shot from the left side to the lower right hand corner of the net.

Lynx Score Early and Late To Capture Charles River Cup

Game boxscore

BOSTON, Mass. -- Lesley University scored two goals in the first five minutes then got two more late in the second half to take the Charles River Cup from Emerson College by a score of 4-2 at Emerson's Rotch Field. The Lynx take the cup back to Cambridge for the first time in four attempts.

Lesley scored first less than three minutes into the contest as Ari Sinanis placed a header into the right side of the net on a corner kick by Tyler Reeves. Just over two minutes later, Joe Petit took advantage of Emerson goal keeper Noah Price's (So., Apex, N.C.) drop of a saved ball and drilled in the Lynx' second marker.

The second goal seemed to awaken Emerson as the Lions' caliber of play picked up and the team stormed back to tie the score at the half. Emerson's first goal came off the foot of Casey Shane (Sr., New York, N.Y.) on a breakaway down the center of the field in the 20th minute.

With just over a minute remaining in the first stanza, the Lions' Zach Sayward (Sr., Franklin, Mass.) drilled a shot off a corner at Lesley keeper Zach Almeida-Beers that the Lynx netminder was unable to smother. Emerson's Kevin Peters (Jr., Nanuet, N.Y.) took advantage of the ricochet and drove the ball into the net.

The second half was evenly played throughout with neither team able to take advantage of several early scoring opportunities. In the 73rd minute, Lesley's Jimmy Paulsen drove down the left side of the field and sent a shot past Price into the lower left corner of the net. Just under six minutes later Yair Correa crushed a free kick from 30 yards out that just eluded Price and sneaked under the crossbar in the middle of the net to complete the scoring.

Emerson held a 16-12 edge in shots in the contest including a 9-6 second half advantage. Almeida-Beers made seven of his 10 saves in the second half, while Price had five total saves in the Emerson goal. Each team took four corner kicks.

Emerson (1-5-0) next has a homecoming date with the Rivier College Raiders at 2:30 Saturday at Rotch Field in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up. Lesley (6-2-1) will host Elms College on Sunday at 2:30pm.

Hatch Leads Lasers to 4-1 Win over Lions

From Lasell College Sports Information

Game boxscore

Newton, Mass.- The Lasell College Lasers and the Emerson College Lions met today in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Taylor Field. The Lasers were the victors of the contest by a score of 4-1.

The Lasers were the first to attack, drilling the opening goal just eight minutes into the match. Dan Hatch received a pass from Tholemson Francois from 20 yards out. Hatch was waiting just outside the six, turning and firing the ball into the opposite corner of the net.

Less than four minutes later, Shane Vinnicombe found Robby Gonzalez from the deep outside into close range, beating the Lions' keeper with another cross-net attack.

At 23:34 into the period, and just three minutes after their previous score, Paul Meucci upped Lasell’s advantage again when Vinnicombe sent a long ball from the midfield to within the goal box. Meucci did a quick hesitation causing the goalkeeper to dive one way, while he shot the other way, scoring his third goal of the season.

Lasell entered the halftime with a comfortable three goal lead. Freshman Evan Gaccione had a close shot that edged just wide at the 56th minute. Emerson’s Joshua Watkinson (Rochester, NH) followed up with the first near opportunity for the Lions in the second with a ball that skimmed the top of the cross bar on the net.

The score remained unchanged until at 68:16, Anatole Draleau chipped a pass to Zachary Johnson who was situated in front of the net, dropping the ball just a short way to Hatch who scored with a cannon from short left field.

Emerson got on the board in the 77th minute when Corey Walls (Scituate, Mass.) dribble from the midline past the Lasers defense and shot a ball hard at Lasell’s Julian Dutton in the net. Dutton was ready but a bad bounce trickled the ball behind the Lasers keeper and Mike Giles (Wakefield, R.I.) of Emerson knocked the loose ball into the goal. The Lions goal finalized the scoring on the day.

Dutton collect a total of five saves in the net over the 90 minute game for Lasell. During the final 20 minutes of contest Dan Pelegero (Woodinville, Wash.) replaced Noah Price (Apex, N.C.) in net for Emerson and collected four saves in the final minutes. Price had three saves in the contest.

The Lasers are now 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in GNAC play. Emerson finished the day at 1-4-0 and they are 0-2-0 in the conference.

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior F Jake Yaris delivered the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to break a scoreless deadlock and lead the Norwich University men’s soccer team to a hard fought 2-0 victory over visiting Emerson College Saturday afternoon at Howard Field.

The game was a physical back-and-forth affair with both teams getting numerous chances to score. Timely defense and solid goaltending, along with near misses, kept the scoreboard clear.

Emerson (1-2-0, 0-1-0 GNAC) had a great chance to score in the 37th minute when Mike Giles blasted a shot towards the right corner of the net. Norwich senior GK Charles Maxwell made an outstanding save diving to his left and just managed to tip the ball over the net and preserve the 0-0 score.

Midfielder Michael Concecao (Jr., Cranston, R.I.) crossed a free kick from the right side of the field into the middle of the box. Junior Taiki Otsuka (Jr., Kanagawa-Ken, Japan) put his head on the ball and found the foot of Jean Demorcy (Sr., Jersey City, NJ) who hammered it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead with 2:30 remaining in the contest. The Lions would have no answer for the surging Mustangs who rode to their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season.

Mount Ida goal tender Brian Leighton (Turner, ME) came up with a couple of huge saves for his squad tallying four on the day. Strauss would also come up big for Emerson notching seven stops.

Emerson next plays Becker College on Thursday at 6:00pm at Rotch Field in a non-conference match.

Lions Bite UMass Boston

Boston, Mass. -- Casey Shane (Jr., New York N.Y.) scored the game's only goal to bring The Lions a 1-0 win over UMass Boston at Rotch Field today.

Before the game Coach Jared Scarpaci said that he hoped to preserve the momentum from last weeks 3-1 win over Eastern Nazarene College.

"We're looking for a solidly played game and to continue what we had done over at Eastern Nazarene," he said.

Head Coach of UMass Miles Berry said that he was looking for his team to continue with the momentum they had in the second half of their game last week.

With the coaches from both teams looking to continue momentum from the previous weeks, the game came down to a kinetic battle for dominance of the field.

Derek Dumont,(Jr., Pittsburgh PA) normally a goal keeper, was pressed into field action because heat forced substitutions early in the game. "I just went out there and did what I could," he said.

Shane said that despite his kicking the winning goal, the victory belongs to the entire team stalwartly dominating defensively, in spite of heat that made it like playing inside a closet full of teddy bears.

Lions take advantage of opportunity and open season with victory, 3-1

(From Eastern Nazarene College Sports Information - 9/4/08)
QUINCY, MASS. -- After battling back from a 1-0 deficit, Eastern Nazarene conceded the game winning goal in the 78th minute and absorbed its first loss of the season, by a 3-1 count to Emerson College

Emerson scored a first half goal by Greg Epstein (Sr., Marlboro, N.J.), on a near post finish from Zach Sayward's (Jr. Franklin, Mass.) cross, the Crusaders hung around and tallied a goal of their own in the second half when ENC co-captain Matt Woodley (Setauket, N.Y.) sent a bending ball around the wall of Lion players on a direct kick to notch the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.

The Crusaders continued to press the Lions for heavy portions of the next 25 minutes. But a foul 40 yards from the Crusaders goal, provided the Lions with a direct kick that they capitalized on. Kevin Peters (So., Nanuet, N.Y.) served the ball into the left side of the penalty box and Emerson’s Casey Shane (Jr., New York, N.Y.) beat everyone to it heading the ball back across the goal, over the head of Crusader keeper Chris Cherry (Brockton, Mass.) just inside the far post. The goal sparked the Lions and six minutes later Shane found himself 30 yards out unmarked, and let a shot fly that trailed left and just outside of Cherry's reach for goal number three.

Emerson held the shot advantage at 18-13 while Lion goalkeeper Nick Strauss (Jr., Norwood, Mass.) collected five saves and Crusaders goalkeeper Chris Cherry had nine saves.

Emerson (1-0) hosts UMass-Boston at 12:30 pm for its second match of the season.

NORTHFIELD, VT. Rob Harlow scored a pair of goals, and Drew Dilley added a goal and an assist to lead the Norwich men’s soccer team to its fourth consecutive shutout victory, 4-0, over Emerson on Wednesday afternoon at Howard Field.

The Cadets (14-2-1, 9-0-1 GNAC), who capped an undefeated conference slate, have locked up the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. NU will host a quarterfinal game against an undetermined opponent at Howard Field on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1:30 p.m.

Emerson (10-8-0, 3-8-0 GNAC) controlled play for the first several minutes, but were unable to capitalize on its chances. The Lions’ inability to put shots on goal hurt them throughout the game as only three of their 17 shot attempts were on target.

Harlow opened the scoring for Norwich in the fourth minute when he corralled a pass from Chris Rivet and drilled the ball from the left side of the field into the far right-hand corner of the net to put the Cadets on top, 1-0.

Ryan Boyton, who has been named GNAC “Rookie of the Week” each of the past two weeks, continued his hot play, scoring NU’s second goal off an assist from Dilley in the 36th minute.

Pagragan made three saves, including a big stop on a point-blank shot attempt late in the game to preserve his third straight shutout, and sixth blanking of the season. As a team, Norwich has notched 10 shutout victories this year.

Imbert made several impressive stops throughout the match to keep Emerson close. He finished with 11 saves in the contest. Will Sagar led the Lions’ offense with seven shots, including two of the team’s three shots on goal.
