Fennessey Named Academic All-District

Bryan Fennessey Bryan Fennessey (Sr., East Greenwich, R.I.) has been selected to the ESPN:  The Magazine College Division Academic All-District second team in a vote by the District 1 college sports Information directors.  Fennessey, a broadcast journalism major, carries a 3.54 grade point average.

Fennessey was the team's most valuable player in 2008 when he was a perfect 5-0 on the mound with a 2.42 earned run average and hit .300 as a first baseman.  He also starred in the field, making only three errors in 184 chances. Fennessey is a two time Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Star.  His selection to the Academic All-District team was as a pitcher.

Fennessey is one of 35 Emerson College students who will travel to Beijing this summer to work in press venues at the Olympic Games.  He has worked for both the college radio station and television station, and has also competed in varsity basketball.

To qualify for the Academic All-District program a player must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better.  District one comprises the New England states, New York State and the Canadian maritime provinces.

Fennessey Lone Lion on All-GNAC Team

Pitcher/first baseman Bryan Fennessey (Sr., East Greenwich R.I., left) has been selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference first-team All-Star team as a utility player. Fennessey, a left hander, was a perfect 5-0 on the mound with a 2.42 earned run average, and hit .300.  Among his 27 hits, he stroked three doubles, a triple, and a home run and drove in 15 runs.  His fielding percentage was .982, making only three errors on 184 chances.  Fennessey was a second-team selection in 2007.

Pirates Host Lions' Baseball Team

Pittsburgh ParrotDuring its 2008 Florida schedule the Emerson College Baseball team was the guest of Emerson alumnus Tevor Gooby, Vice President of Florida Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Gooby hosted the team for lunch at a game against the Cincinnati Reds.  The team was brought out onto the field and visited with pitcher Tom Gorzelanny, a 14 game winner for the Pirates in 2007. The team also visited with the Pirate Parrot.

Emerson Baseball Well Represented at Yawkey League All-Star Game
Yawkey League All-Stars '07The Emerson College Baseball team was well represented in the 2007 edition of the Yawkey Summer Baseball League All-Star game in Lynn, Massachusetts.  Players Zach Wintrow (upcoming senior, Killingly, Conn., second from left ) and Kent Anderson (upcoming senior, Kensington, Md., second from right) were each all-star selections based on their play with the South Boston Saints.  Representing the Medford Mad Dogs were Head Coach David Hanley (right), Assistant Coach Jim Taylor (left), and Assistant Coach Buddy Hanley (center).  Buddy Hanley is the shortstop for the Mad Dogs, While David Hanley and Jim Taylor coach the team.

Fennessey Named to GNAC All-Conference Team
Bryan FennesseyEmerson College first baseman Bryan Fennessey (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I., left) has been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball all-conference second team.  Fennessey, who started all 26 of the team's games, led the Lion regulars in batting average while hitting .333.  He was also number one on the team in home runs (3), RBI (13), slugging percentage (.526) and on base percentage (.430).  He fielded 176 chances while making only five errors all season for a fielding percentage of .972.  He also made two pitching appearances. 


Lions Grab Three Straight Wins

Bryan FennesseyAfter beating Albertus Magnus 7-6 in the first game of a Friday, April 13 doubleheader, Bryan Fennessey (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I., left) provided all the offense in the second game with a three-run home run to complete the sweep for the Lions.  Kent Anderson (Jr., Kensington, Md.) gave his team six strong innings on the mound before giving way to Pete Karl (Fr., Wallingford, Conn.) in the seventh with the tying run on second base and no outs.  Karl struck out the first hitter, got the second batter to bounce one back to the mound and ended the game on a pop up to center field.

Glenn Hyatt (Sr., Wallingford, Conn.) started and pitched into the seventh inning in the first game picking up the win before giving way to Fennessey who recorded his first save.

The Lions extended the winning streak to three by beating Newbury 16-6 Saturday, April 14.  Senior Chris Bilton (Berklee Sr., Vineland, ONTARIO) picked up his second win of the season, evening his record at 2-2.


Emerson wins first GNAC Contest
Zach WintrowOn Sunday, April 1, the Emerson College baseball team won its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference game of the year by beating Norwich University 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Chris Bilton (Berklee Sr.,  Vineland, ONTARIO) pitched into the 7th with a 4-3 lead.  After giving up a double with one out, Bilton gave way to Steve Sanda (Sr., Pembroke, Mass.), who struck out the first batter he faced but then gave up a game tying single before retiring the side without further damage.  In the last half of the 7th inning with the bases loaded Mike Cozy (Sr., Silver Spring, Md.) knocked in his team leading ninth RBI of the season to lock up the win.

On Saturday, March 31, the Lions got a complete game effort out of Drew Sumner (Sr., Colchester, Ver.), losing 6-0 against GNAC rival, Rivier.  In the second game of the doubleheader the Lions held a lead 3-2 into the 6th inning when starter, Peter Karl (Fr., Wallingford, CT) tired and the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.  The Lion’s lost 10-3 despite catcher Zach Wintrow’s (Jr., Killingly, CT, above left) first home run of the year.  Wintrow was named to the GNAC Honor Roll for his play in the two doubleheaders.


Lions Take Finale of Spring Break Trip

Mike CozyPete KarlThe Emerson College Lions baseball team finished its southern trip on a positive note by beating Lehman College 5-2 in the last game of the tour. Pitcher Chris Bilton (Berklee Sr., Vineland, ONTARIO) picked up the win evening his mound record for the trip at 1-1.  Peter Karl (Fr., Wallingford, Conn., left) picked up the save going the last 2 2/3 innings. 

Karl finished the trip with a team high 10 hits, while Pete Roessler (Berklee Sr., Fairfield, CT), led the team in batting average at .375.  Mike Cozy (Sr., Silver Spring, Md., right) had nine hits while leading the team in RBI’s with 6 and hitting .360.  Bryan Fennessey (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I.) had eight hits, including two home runs, and scored a team-high six runs.

Steve Sanda (Sr., Pembroke, Mass.) made 5 appearances on the mound, all in relief, without giving up a run.  The Lion’s defense was solid, finishing the trip with a .953 fielding percentage. 

The Lions finished 1-8 on the trip, and are scheduled to resume play in a non-conference doubleheader at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sunday, March 18.

2005-2006

All-Stars
Emerson College players Kent Anderson (Kensington, MD) and Bryan Fennessey (East Greenwich, RI) have been named to the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Team.  Both players were selected for their play on the infield, Anderson at third base and Fennessey at first base.  Anderson led the team in hitting during the Fall with a .419 average.  Fennessey was second on the team, batting .394.  Each had 13 hits and five doubles.  Fennessy also made only one error in 45 fielding attempts (.978 fielding percentage).

The Emerson Baseball Team finished the Spring with a record of 5-6 Freshman Bryan Fennessey was selected the team MVP. The East Greenwich, RI native led the Lions with 19 hits, seven doubles, 18 RBI and two home runs. Fennessey finished the season with a .463 batting average and added two wins on the mound to go along with 34 strike outs in 28 innings pitched. The Unsung Hero of the team was Lucas Einstein, a sophomore. Einstein had 17 hits, stole four bases, made five appearances on the mound and finished with a .362 batting average. The Lions also got major contributions from freshmen Zach Wintrow and Kent Anderson who finished with identical .432 batting averages.
