Karl Leads Lion Quartet on GNAC All-Conference Team

Peter Karl Emerson College outfielder/pitcher Peter Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn., left) is one of four Lions honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference by being named to the All-Conference teams.

Karl, the league's leading hitter through most of the season, batted .447 and led Emerson in doubles (10), triples (2), and home runs (4). He was 15 for 16 in stolen base attempts and had 17 walks against only two strikeouts in 124 plate appearances. On the mound he tied for the league lead in wins with six. His mound record was 6-2 with four complete games pitched.

Brian Kitson (So., Londonderry, N.H.) was a second team choice. Kitson played both third base and first base for the Lions, batted .364, and was second on the team in that category. Kitson was also second on the team with 22 runs batted in, and made only six errors in 151 fielding opportunities for a .961 fielding percentage.

Named to the third team was Ryan Garber (Fr., Holmdel, N.J.). Garber was a selection at shortstop. In his freshman season he hit .340 while starting all of Emerson's 28 games. He had 33 hits with nine doubles and 13 RBI.

Nick Coit (So., Plymouth, Mass.) was Emerson's Selection to the GNAC Sportsmanship team.

Karl named GNAC player of the Week

Emerson College Baseball pitcher/outfielder Pete Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn., left) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic conference baseball player of the week for his play the week ending April 12. The GNAC's leading hitter at .520 for the season, Karl powered Emerson to two wins to keep[ the Lions above the .500 mark. Karl had a 1.714 slugging percentage and an .800 on base percentage with five hits in seven at bats including a double and two home runs. In addition to his hitting, Karl also fielded 10 chances without an error and pitched a nine-inning complete game win.

Lion TRIO NAMED TO GNAC HONOR ROLL

Three members of the Emerson College Baseball team have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Weekly Honor roll for the week ending March 29. Outfielder/pitcher Pete Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn.), shortstop Ryan Garber (Fr., Holmdel, N.J.), and pitcher Ben McNamara (Mass Art Jr., Londonderry, N.H.) were all selected.

Karl hit .600 in three games with nine hits in 15 at bats. He had a double and triple, scored five runs and drove in three. He was also 2-0 in pitching appearances. Karl is hitting .563 in Emerson's 12 games.

Garber was 5-10 with five runs scored and four RBI. His on base percentage was .643 and he was flawless in the field in 17 chances.

McNamara pitched six innings in his only start of the week, holding Norwich University to three hits and allowing only one earned run with six strikeouts.

Emerson Baseball featured on "Boston Baseball Heads Show"

BaseballHeadsShowPhotoCroppedFour members of the Emerson College baseball team and Coach Dave Hanley were recently guests on the "Boston Baseball Heads Show". The program is a public access show on the Comcast Cable system. The program will air on cable channel 12 on Comcast systems in the Boston metropolitan area, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6:00 and 8:00pm as a filler between other programing.

SPRING BREAK TRIP RECAP

HallBattingCroppedThe Lion's finished their Spring Trip with a 3-6 record. Being a very young team with 10 first year players, the offensive spark was provided by Peter Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn.) and Brian Kitson (So., Londonderry, N.H.) along with Peter Maltzan (Berklee So., Lexington, Mass.). Karl hit ,471 while leading the team in hits (16), runs (11) and home runs (2). Kitson hit .393, while knocking in a team leading eight RBI's. Kitson finished the trip with 11 hits, three walks and was hit by a pitch an incredible five times in nine games. Maltzan hit for a .407 batting average, also with 11 hits, drove in six runs and did not strike out in over 30 plate appearances.

Ben McNamara (Mass College of Art Jr., Londonderry, N.H.), proved to be the "Ace" of the staff. McNamara started game one and pitched into the 6th inning before giving way to the bullpen. The game was eventually won in extra innings with the win going to Adam Speakman (Fr., Barrington, R.I.), who made five appearances in relief. Team at DisneyLater in the week, McNamara had a complete game victory against Wisconsin Lutheran giving up five runs on four hits and striking out five.

Catcher Geoffrey Lopes (Fr., Falmouth, Mass.) enjoyed a great trip defensively, throwing out five base stealers and picking a runner off of first. Lopes caught eight of the nine games in Florida.

Lopes, along with shortstop, Ryan Garber (Fr., Holmdel, N.J.)added nine hits during the trip. Outfielder Austin Fontanella (Fr., Pelham, N.H.) chipped in with seven hits and second baseman, Speakman added 6 hits.

Pete Hall (Sr., North Canton, Ohio, above left) and Jeff Buege (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) made big contributions, each with a couple of clutch hits during the week, Hall also had five RBI's and Buege pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief allowing only one run.

Two impressive starts were turned in on the mound by Jeff Kolb (Fr., Barrington, R.I.). Kolb pitched 8 1/3 innings striking out seven.

The Lions continue their season on Monday, March 23 against Gordon College.

JWU Baseball Knocks Off Emerson, 8-6 In GNAC Playoffs

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University baseball team defeated Emerson by a score of 8-6 in the opening round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference playoffs at Pierce Field on Thursday evening.

Emerson jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first when an RBI double by Ryan Garber (Fr. Holmdel, N.J.) put the Lions ahead 1-0. Garber later scored on a wild pitch to put Emerson up 2-0. Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Teddy Katz hit a two out single, stole third and scored on an Emerson error. JWU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth after senior Frank Nadjavestky led off with a walk and scored on a single to right by fellow senior Justin Maldonado knotting the game at 2-2. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Maldonado drew a bases loaded walk to put the team up 3-2. After a squeeze bunt by junior Michael Sarfati made the score 4-2, the Wildcats extended their lead to 6-2 on a two run double by junior Waldis Garcia.

The visiting Lions threatened in the top of the eighth, when Brian Kitson (So., Londonderry, N.H.) led off with a single and later scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Nick Vennochi (So., Melrose, Mass.), cutting the lead to 6-3. A two-run double by Adam Speakman (Fr., Barrington, R.I.) then made it a one-run game at 6-5. Emerson knotted the game at 6-6 when Zak Levine (Fr., Beverly, Mass.), who drew a walk earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch. JWU responded in the bottom of the inning as senior Eric Rapuano led off with a double. Rapuano then scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Bryan Sayers giving the team the 7-6 lead. Maldonado put the squad ahead 8-6 with an RBI single and the team held on for the 8-6 victory.

Maldonado was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for JWU while senior John Kuschman went 2-for-4 in the victory for the Wildcats. Junior Nick Marine went six and two third innings for the Wildcats, allowing two unearned runs on six hits. Junior Jeff Jordan picked up the win for JWU, pitching one and two third innings of scoreless relief. Peter Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn.) suffered the loss for Emerson, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings for the Lions. Gaber was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI for Emerson while Speakman went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 19-18 while Emerson falls to 13-15. Johnson & Wales advances to the final four of the GNAC Championship on Friday, April 24 when they travel to St. Joseph’s of Maine for a 4p.m. contest. The remainder of the tournament is a double-elimination format with the finals taking place on Sunday afternoon.

Lions Make Late Charge to Defeat AMCATS, 7-5

Ryan GarberPAXTON, MASS. -- The Emerson College baseball team scored four times in the final two innings to grab a 7-5 victory over Anna Maria College at Alumni Field on Tuesday night. The win evens the Lions' record at 8-8 overall, while they remain 2-2 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Brian Kitson (So., Londonderry, N.H.) went 3-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Ryan Garber (Fr., Holmdel, N.J., left) went 3-5 and scored twice to lead the Lions offensive attack. Pete Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn.) and Geoff Lopes (Fr., Falmouth, Mass.) chipped in two hits, a run and an RBI. Karl also tossed a complete-game for the Lions, surrendering four earned runs while scattering 12 hits to improve the season record to 4-1.

Emerson jumped out in front, 1-0, in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of two costly AMC errors.

The AMCATS would strike back in the bottom half of the inning, getting an RBI triple to deep center from Scafidi and an RBI double down the line from Jim McNamara to grab a 2-1 lead.

The Lions tied the score in the top of the third when Garber hit a lead-off double and came around to score on an RBI single to Kitson.

Anna Maria regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Judd Evarts delivered a sacrifice fly to score Labelle, who had a double to begin the inning.

Kodys gave the AMCATS a 5-3 advantage with a solo blast to left-center field in the seventh.

The Lions responded by rallying for three runs on four hits in the eighth. Pete Hall (Sr., North Canton, Ohio) delivered a clutch two-out pinch-hit RBI single up the middle to tie the game at five, and was followed by Karl, who smacked a double to right-center scoring the go ahead run.

After adding an insurance run in the top of the ninth of an RBI single by Lopes, Karl set the AMCATS down in the bottom of the inning, getting some help from his defense on a tremendous diving catch by second baseman Adam Speakman (Fr., Barrington, R.I.) to solidify the win.

Lions Strong Defense Downs Newbury

EASTON, MASS. -- The Emerson Lions ran their winning streak to four straight Wednesday afternoon defeating Newbury College by the score of 13-5. Emerson played their best defensive game of the season going the full nine innings without committing an error. The defense turned a 6-4-3 double play in the fourth inning to end a threat and picked a runner off first base after he made a wide turn to begin the ninth inning.

Zak Levine (Fr., Beverly, Mass.) was dominant on the mound. After striking out the side in the first inning on 10 pitches, Levine settled in, going seven strong innings, allowing only one run on two hits, while fanning eight and walking four.

Offensively, Peter Karl (Jr., Wallingford. Conn.) kept up his torrid pace at the plate, going 3 for 6 with a single, double and triple, giving him 29 hits through the first 13 games. Pete Hall (Sr., North Canton, Ohio) had two hits and five RBI's. Brian Kitson (So., Londonderry, N.H.) and Adam Speakman (Fr., Barrington, R.I.) each added 2 hits.

The Emerson nine face the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime on Friday. First pitch is slated for 3p.m. in Buzzards Bay.

Lions Beat Gordon on Walk-Off Walk

Pete HallWENHAM, MASS. -- The Emerson Lions beat the Gordon Fighting Scots 8-7 on a walk off base-on-balls by Brian Kitson (So., Londonderry, N.H.). The Lions trailed early 3-0. After putting up a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Emerson nine broke out with five runs in the fifth. Pete Hall (Sr., North Canton, Ohio, pictured) had the big hit in the inning with a pinch hit, two out, three-run Homer.

Jeff Kolb (Fr., Barrington, R.I.) started the game on the hill and went five innings, departing with a 5-3 lead. Kolb allowed four hits, walked six, and hit a batter while striking out three, then gave way to Zak Levine (Fr., Beverly, Mass.) who worked into the ninth inning. With a 6-5 lead, Levine got the first two hitters in the 9th to fly out. Gordon then hit a single and a triple off the right field fence to tie the game. Peter Karl (Jr., Wallingford, Conn.) came in and proceeded to balk the go ahead run in before getting out of the inning.

In the last of the ninth shortstop, Ryan Garber (Fr., Holmdel, N.J.) singled, Levine followed with a single of his own. First baseman, Nick Vennochi (So., Melrose, Mass.) walked to load the bases. After a wild pitch scored Garber with the tying run the next two batters struck out, adding to the drama. Second baseman Adam Speakman (Fr., Barrington, R.I.) worked a walk to reload the bases and then Kitson worked the count full, fouled off a couple of pitches and got ball four to force in the game winner.

Karl not only recorded the win on the mound, his second of the young season, but also had four hits in the game.

Fennessey Named Academic All-District

Bryan Fennessey Bryan Fennessey (Sr., East Greenwich, R.I.) has been selected to the ESPN:  The Magazine College Division Academic All-District second team in a vote by the District 1 college sports Information directors.  Fennessey, a broadcast journalism major, carries a 3.54 grade point average.

Fennessey was the team's most valuable player in 2008 when he was a perfect 5-0 on the mound with a 2.42 earned run average and hit .300 as a first baseman.  He also starred in the field, making only three errors in 184 chances. Fennessey is a two time Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Star.  His selection to the Academic All-District team was as a pitcher.

Fennessey is one of 35 Emerson College students who will travel to Beijing this summer to work in press venues at the Olympic Games.  He has worked for both the college radio station and television station, and has also competed in varsity basketball.

To qualify for the Academic All-District program a player must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better.  District one comprises the New England states, New York State and the Canadian maritime provinces.

Fennessey Lone Lion on All-GNAC Team

Pitcher/first baseman Bryan Fennessey (Sr., East Greenwich R.I., left) has been selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference first-team All-Star team as a utility player. Fennessey, a left hander, was a perfect 5-0 on the mound with a 2.42 earned run average, and hit .300.  Among his 27 hits, he stroked three doubles, a triple, and a home run and drove in 15 runs.  His fielding percentage was .982, making only three errors on 184 chances.  Fennessey was a second-team selection in 2007.

Pirates Host Lions' Baseball Team

Pittsburgh ParrotDuring its 2008 Florida schedule the Emerson College Baseball team was the guest of Emerson alumnus Tevor Gooby, Vice President of Florida Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Gooby hosted the team for lunch at a game against the Cincinnati Reds.  The team was brought out onto the field and visited with pitcher Tom Gorzelanny, a 14 game winner for the Pirates in 2007. The team also visited with the Pirate Parrot.

Emerson Baseball Well Represented at Yawkey League All-Star Game
Yawkey League All-Stars '07The Emerson College Baseball team was well represented in the 2007 edition of the Yawkey Summer Baseball League All-Star game in Lynn, Massachusetts.  Players Zach Wintrow (upcoming senior, Killingly, Conn., second from left ) and Kent Anderson (upcoming senior, Kensington, Md., second from right) were each all-star selections based on their play with the South Boston Saints.  Representing the Medford Mad Dogs were Head Coach David Hanley (right), Assistant Coach Jim Taylor (left), and Assistant Coach Buddy Hanley (center).  Buddy Hanley is the shortstop for the Mad Dogs, While David Hanley and Jim Taylor coach the team.

Fennessey Named to GNAC All-Conference Team
Bryan FennesseyEmerson College first baseman Bryan Fennessey (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I., left) has been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball all-conference second team.  Fennessey, who started all 26 of the team's games, led the Lion regulars in batting average while hitting .333.  He was also number one on the team in home runs (3), RBI (13), slugging percentage (.526) and on base percentage (.430).  He fielded 176 chances while making only five errors all season for a fielding percentage of .972.  He also made two pitching appearances. 


Lions Grab Three Straight Wins

Bryan FennesseyAfter beating Albertus Magnus 7-6 in the first game of a Friday, April 13 doubleheader, Bryan Fennessey (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I., left) provided all the offense in the second game with a three-run home run to complete the sweep for the Lions.  Kent Anderson (Jr., Kensington, Md.) gave his team six strong innings on the mound before giving way to Pete Karl (Fr., Wallingford, Conn.) in the seventh with the tying run on second base and no outs.  Karl struck out the first hitter, got the second batter to bounce one back to the mound and ended the game on a pop up to center field.

Glenn Hyatt (Sr., Wallingford, Conn.) started and pitched into the seventh inning in the first game picking up the win before giving way to Fennessey who recorded his first save.

The Lions extended the winning streak to three by beating Newbury 16-6 Saturday, April 14.  Senior Chris Bilton (Berklee Sr., Vineland, ONTARIO) picked up his second win of the season, evening his record at 2-2.


Emerson wins first GNAC Contest
Zach WintrowOn Sunday, April 1, the Emerson College baseball team won its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference game of the year by beating Norwich University 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Chris Bilton (Berklee Sr.,  Vineland, ONTARIO) pitched into the 7th with a 4-3 lead.  After giving up a double with one out, Bilton gave way to Steve Sanda (Sr., Pembroke, Mass.), who struck out the first batter he faced but then gave up a game tying single before retiring the side without further damage.  In the last half of the 7th inning with the bases loaded Mike Cozy (Sr., Silver Spring, Md.) knocked in his team leading ninth RBI of the season to lock up the win.

On Saturday, March 31, the Lions got a complete game effort out of Drew Sumner (Sr., Colchester, Ver.), losing 6-0 against GNAC rival, Rivier.  In the second game of the doubleheader the Lions held a lead 3-2 into the 6th inning when starter, Peter Karl (Fr., Wallingford, CT) tired and the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.  The Lion’s lost 10-3 despite catcher Zach Wintrow’s (Jr., Killingly, CT, above left) first home run of the year.  Wintrow was named to the GNAC Honor Roll for his play in the two doubleheaders.


Lions Take Finale of Spring Break Trip

Mike CozyPete KarlThe Emerson College Lions baseball team finished its southern trip on a positive note by beating Lehman College 5-2 in the last game of the tour. Pitcher Chris Bilton (Berklee Sr., Vineland, ONTARIO) picked up the win evening his mound record for the trip at 1-1.  Peter Karl (Fr., Wallingford, Conn., left) picked up the save going the last 2 2/3 innings. 

Karl finished the trip with a team high 10 hits, while Pete Roessler (Berklee Sr., Fairfield, CT), led the team in batting average at .375.  Mike Cozy (Sr., Silver Spring, Md., right) had nine hits while leading the team in RBI’s with 6 and hitting .360.  Bryan Fennessey (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I.) had eight hits, including two home runs, and scored a team-high six runs.

Steve Sanda (Sr., Pembroke, Mass.) made 5 appearances on the mound, all in relief, without giving up a run.  The Lion’s defense was solid, finishing the trip with a .953 fielding percentage. 

The Lions finished 1-8 on the trip, and are scheduled to resume play in a non-conference doubleheader at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sunday, March 18.

2005-2006

All-Stars
Emerson College players Kent Anderson (Kensington, MD) and Bryan Fennessey (East Greenwich, RI) have been named to the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Team.  Both players were selected for their play on the infield, Anderson at third base and Fennessey at first base.  Anderson led the team in hitting during the Fall with a .419 average.  Fennessey was second on the team, batting .394.  Each had 13 hits and five doubles.  Fennessy also made only one error in 45 fielding attempts (.978 fielding percentage).

Re-Cap
The Emerson Baseball Team finished the Spring with a record of 5-6 Freshman Bryan Fennessey was selected the team MVP. The East Greenwich, RI native led the Lions with 19 hits, seven doubles, 18 RBI and two home runs. Fennessey finished the season with a .463 batting average and added two wins on the mound to go along with 34 strike outs in 28 innings pitched. The Unsung Hero of the team was Lucas Einstein, a sophomore. Einstein had 17 hits, stole four bases, made five appearances on the mound and finished with a .362 batting average. The Lions also got major contributions from freshmen Zach Wintrow and Kent Anderson who finished with identical .432 batting averages.
