Online Networking Tips
Never participated in an online networking event before? Here are some tips to help get you started!
1. Introduce yourself before the event
Write a one or two sentence introduction before the event that you can copy and paste at the beginning of your chat. It will save time for questions and conversing.
2. Have your questions ready
Plan your questions ahead of time to make valuable use of the conversation. Open-ended questions tend to give more informative and interesting responses.
3. Dive right in
Each minute is an opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and the person on the other end, so don’t waste time and start the conversation right away.
4. Bring your positive attitude
Attitudes can be sensed regardless of the medium so be positive! Don’t complain about your job or your boss; instead, frame those negatives as something you are hoping to turn into positives.
5. Avoid "text" speak and abbreviations
Be professional and use language you would use during an in-person networking event. Abbreviations can be unclear and will take up time out of your conversation to explain.
6. Follow up after the event
Before the end of your conversation, ask to connect with each other on LinkedIn. That way you can learn more details about each other and easily get in touch down the road.
