  • Working Class Hero: John Lennon
Emerson Journalist-in-Residence Tim Riley is a music critic and author who has written books on The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Madonna. In honor of the upcoming release of his biography of John Lennon, Riley will discuss the enduring myth of Lennon and his most misunderstood song. Participants will listen to the song and discuss such questions as: When did he write “Working Class Hero”? Why has it become shorthand for Lennon’s brand of rock star rebelliousness? Was Lennon raised in a working class home?
  • Is the Book a Killer App: e-Books, e-Readers, and the Digitization of Books
The cry of “Print Is Dead” has been echoed in the news and the academy for more than a decade, yet students are still buying print textbooks and people are buying and publishing paper books in record numbers. Emerson Electronic-Publisher-in-Residence John Rodzvilla will provide an overview of the digital landscape for books. Attendees will discuss reading on mobile phones; e-readers like the Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, and Apple’s iPad; e-textbooks and e-books on campus; and how to find and read thousands of free classics online.
  • Navigating Power and Privilege Through the Opportunity Walk
We have all been in a situation in which power and privilege have affected our lives in one way or another, both positive and negative. In this workshop, participants will explore how personal interactions and assumptions about others and ourselves can sometimes center around the big eight diversity dimensions (race, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, class, mental/physical ability, and religion). Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Gwendolyn Bates will lead an interactive exercise called the Opportunity Walk, which will challenge participants’ understanding of power and privilege, and the role they play in our culture.

12:00 pm
Reunion Luncheons

Share memories and laughs with your classmates at luncheons celebrating milestone reunion years (all graduating classes ending in 6 and 1). Archival displays will be on view, and be prepared for some surprise faculty appearances!

1:00 pm
Kasteel Well 25th Anniversary Celebration Luncheon

Celebrate 25 years of the College’s Kasteel Well program. The pioneering first class of 1986 will host this festive celebration, where alumni can wax nostalgic about their European adventures. Dutch treats will be served.

WERS invites the Emerson community to recognize and honor this year’s inductees to the WERS Hall of Fame: Al Jaffe ’68, Constance Lloyd ’79, and posthumously Gerry Kroeger, professor emeritus of Emerson College. A reception will follow the ceremony.
