Registration for Continuing Students

Academic Advising for Registration

All undergraduate students are required to meet with their academic advisor to discuss course planning and educational goals prior to registration each semester. At this meeting, students are provided with an access code for online registration. Students are unable to access online registration without this access code.

Students advised by faculty members schedule appointments with their faculty advisor during Advising Week, which is the week prior to the start of registration each semester. Check the academic calendar for specific dates.

Students advised by a member of the Academic Advising Center meet with their advisor at either an individual or group (MAP - Meeting for Academic Planning) appointment. These meetings will take place over the course of 4-5 weeks prior to registration.

A friendly piece of advice -- arrange to meet with your academic advisor well in advance of registration. The faculty and professional advisors are responsible for seeing many students, not just you, and if you wait until Advising Week to call for an appointment you may find that your advisor has no free time left.

If you aren't sure who your academic advisor is, you may access their name and contact information through Interactive Services.

The Nuts and Bolts of Registration

When:

  • Fall semester registration takes place in early April.
  • Spring semester registration takes place in late November.
  • Exact dates can be found on the academic calendar.
  • Continuing students are assigned a date and time to register during the registration period based on the number of credits earned. This does not include current semester credits.

Where:

How:

  • Prior to registration, all students meet with their academic advisor to discuss course planning and academic goals. In order to log on to the Web registration system, students must enter their ID number, PIN number, and special registration access code. The registration access code (which changes each semester) is obtained from the student's academic advisor after meeting to discuss course planning and academic goals.
  • Course schedules for the upcoming semester are available 1-2 weeks prior to registration and accessed online at http://www.emerson.edu/courses
  • All Holds must be cleared prior to registration -- any outstanding holds will block a student from accessing the online registration system. Log on to Interactive Services to check for Holds.
  • A $50 late fee is charged to students who have not registered for at least one credit prior to the registration deadline, which is typically the day after the last day of the registration period. Check the academic calendar for the exact date each semester.
  • Students may be dropped from classes if payment has not been arranged prior to the deadline imposed by Student Accounts.

Note: Once registration begins, the Academic Advising Center typically holds walk-in hours from 9:30a.m.-4p.m. throughout the registration period to help any student requiring assistance on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Registration for New Students (Incoming First-Year Students and Transfer Students)

When:

  • New undergraduate students entering in the Fall semester are contacted by the Academic Advising Center over the Summer. We send each student a registration packet including instructions and a course selection form. First-year students register for the entire academic year (both the Fall and Spring semester); transfer students register for the Fall semester only.

Where:

  • Students receive the Registration Packet at their home address and fill out the course selection form based on the enclosed instructions and personal preferences.

How:

  • Once the course selection form is returned to the Academic Advising Center, students are placed in classes based on degree requirements, student preferences, and seat availability. A schedule is mailed to the student by the end of August. Changes can be made to the Fall schedule through the Academic Advising Center or the Registrar's office. See Adding/Dropping a Course for more information.

Note: New students in need of additional guidance when choosing classes may meet with an advisor to discuss the process and explore options. Individual appointments or phone appointments may be arranged by calling 617.824.7876.
