General Education Requirements

Liberal Arts courses are taught at the Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies and in every academic department on campus. Emerson's General Education requirements include course work from four areas:

  • Foundation courses
    • One course in oral communication
    • Two courses in written communication
    • One course in quantitative reasoning
  • Liberal Arts Perspective courses
    • Includes one course in each of these categories:
      • Aesthetic
      • Ethics and values
      • Historical
      • Interdisciplinary
      • Literary
      • Scientific
      • Social/psychological
  • Global and U.S. Diversity courses
    • Two courses of a single foreign language [waived if three years of study were taken in secondary school]
    • Two from a selection of U.S. and Global Diversity courses
  • Interdisciplinary Seminar course
    (fulfills the Interdisciplinary Perspective course requirement)
    • Emphasizes the interrelation between different fields of communication and connections between theory and practice
