Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders

CSD Resources & Facilities

Our undergraduate program in communication sciences and disorders takes on added depth, dimension, and vitality as a result of its close association with Emerson's master's degree program—one that U.S. News & World Report ranks among the top 25 in the country. Students have access to the department's state-of-the-art equipment for the acoustical analysis of speech signals, as well as for audio and video recording. In addition, our students benefit from observing or participating in the programs and services of our on-campus Robbins Speech, Language, and Hearing Center.

  • The Program for Acquired Communication Disorders addresses problems due to brain injury such as head trauma, stroke, and Parkinson's disease.
  • The Program for Developmental Communication Disorders is dedicated to the treatment of language delay, articulation problems, autism spectrum disorders, and more general developmental delays.
  • The Program for Speech Improvement focuses on issues related to voice, fluency (including stuttering), and foreign accent.
  • Thayer-Lindsley Family Centered Programs helps deaf and hard of hearing children and their parents establish healthy parent-child interaction and communication in a socially and emotionally positive context.
  • Affiliated Specialty Programs capitalize on the expertise of clinicians and educators from other Boston area institutions and the Emerson clinical facilities. These programs include a language therapy group for children, an Oral Sensory Motor Group for young language-impaired children with feeding and swallowing disorders, and The New England Fluency Program providing treatment for clients of all ages with fluency problems.
