Robbie McCauley

Associate Professor of Performing Arts

Robbie McCauley’s impressive 35-year professional career has seen her in a multitude of artistic roles, including teacher, actor, writer, director, and performance artist. Renowned for her expertise in experimental and avant-garde theatre, Robbie has been honored with Audelco, Bessie, and OBIE awards, and brings a dazzling artistic resume and an unequivocal passion for the arts to her post at Emerson. Much of her work to date has dealt with social change—the idea that the power of art can be used to build a common language for a diverse audience.

During her undergraduate days at Howard University (where she studied under notable poet, director, and playwright Owen Dodson), and graduate-level work at New York University, Robbie also developed a keen interest in the organic process of theatrical performance—how the roles of the playwright, director, actors, and stage technicians meld into one harmonious and powerful product.

From artist to educator, Robbie’s career has spanned all facets of the profession, and taken her across the United States and throughout Europe. But these days, she’s glad to be in Boston. “Boston is a thriving center for the arts,” she says. “So much innovation occurs here. This city consistently proves that theatre does not have to be produced in New York to be great.”
