Emerson Excel: Program for Academic Success & Cultural Adjustment

August 19 – 25, 2014

Emerson Excel is a program designed specifically for international students for whom English in not their first language. The program includes English Language Learning workshops that will prepare you for the classroom, as well as excursions around Boston to help acclimate you to American culture and the city of Boston.

International students who have enrolled in pre-college preparation courses often experience a smoother transition to graduate studies and have a higher success rate in the classroom. The goal is that you begin your classes at Emerson and your experience in Boston with confidence and comfort.

Program Activities

The academic program will start each day at 8:15 AM and will conclude at 5:00 PM with dinner and an optional excursion each evening.

Classroom activities will include:

  • Academic Skills
    • Students will be provided with tools and methods to improve their reading comprehension, writing, speaking fluency, and listening comprehension.
  • Research Writing & Presentations
    • Research methodology topics will include research techniques, how to identify the credibility of sources, APA & MLA citation, and quotation/paraphrasing. Students will also learn the necessary skills for presentation preparation and execution; speech structure, delivery, rules and uses of visual aids, and the importance of peer critique.
  • American Culture
    • Students will be exposed to influential American artists whose materials affect social and consumer culture.

Evening excursions and activities will include:

The program will conclude with the presentation of class awards and certificates of completion.

Program Details

Dates: August 19 - 25, 2014

Option 1 - Cost: $2,500 (with housing)

  • The cost covers tuition, housing from August 18 through August 26, meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), subway passes, and all classroom materials.
  • Students will be responsible for personal excursion expenses such as shopping and entertainment.
  • Housing will be on campus in one of Emerson’s residence halls (double or triple occupancy).
  • Students must check out of the residence hall by 10:00 AM on August 26th.

Option 2 - Cost: $2,000 (without housing)



Enrollment Deadline: July 29, 2014

  • A $500 non-refundable deposit is required secure your space in the program.
  • Full payment of the balance is due August 1, 2014.
