Housing

The Washington Center is committed to providing Metro-accessible housing for students. All the properties are within a short walk to one or more Metro stops. The Washington Center’s housing facility opened in May 2010 and provides an academic and residential experience for its students.

You will share your apartment with other Washington Center interns, including international students. The locations, layouts, and amenities vary, but the residence where most Emerson students will live is located in the NOMA area of Washington, D.C. If a student is placed in an internship outside of the city, they may be housed in carefully selected apartments in northern Virginia or suburban Maryland near a station on Washington’s Metro subway system. Housing assignments are determined by the location of your internship site. All apartments are usually convenient to shops, restaurants, and stores.

Finding housing in the Washington, D.C., area can be difficult, but as long as you complete a housing reservation contract by the required deadline, you will be guaranteed apartment housing. You will live there independently with 24-hour support should you need it.

Most Emerson students will be housed in the new housing facility, exclusively for interns, located in a six-story building on the 140,000-square-foot campus in the NoMa district of Washington, D.C. (The NoMa district is named for its location—“North of Massachusetts Avenue”). Not only is the campus close to four metro and rail stations, but it is also within walking distance to Capitol Hill.

The TWC residence hall is a central hub for students, with a 500-seat auditorium, classroom space, a computer lab, student lounge, fitness center, and parking areas. Each student residence is fully furnished and outfitted with air-conditioning and heating units, fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, and secure access to the building. Utilities are covered by the housing fees. Housing and Residence Life staff is available 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency. There is a health clinic located 2 blocks away and a free shuttle bus service to transport you to the grocery store and metro stops. There is also a service students can call to be escorted back to the residence hall.

Each student will be housed in a "quad" (two-bedroom) apartment. There are two beds in each room, and four students per apartment. Each apartment has two bathrooms, a kitchen, and living room. TWC does not place more than two students from the same institution in the same apartment.

Housing Assignments

Once you are accepted to the program, you will receive information from TWC regarding housing options. TWC’s Office of Student Life does not distribute housing information through postal mail. You must submit a completed Housing Reservation Form at least six (6) weeks prior to your check-in date to reserve a space in TWC’s housing. This will be done online through TWC’s website.

Your mailing address is listed on your housing assignment letter, which is sent via email approximately 30 days prior to your check-in date. Housing assignments will only be sent to those students who have submitted a completed Housing Reservation Form. Your apartment number will not be released until check-in day as that information can often change before your arrival. No early arrivals are allowed.

Packages or mail sent to your building prior to check-in day will be turned away.

Housing Security Deposit

After your acceptance to the program, TWC will require you to submit a $300 housing security deposit online through its website. The housing security deposit secures your place in housing. The credit card information you provide will be held for any charges/damages, lost keys, etc. that you may incur within The Washington Center housing. If you cancel your housing reservation, or drop out of the program, you immediately forfeit your $300 housing security deposit.

A final charge amount will be determined after all charges are received from building management, which is at least 10 weeks after departure. Please note, any and all damages/charges to an apartment are divided among the occupants. Your credit card will not be charged unless damages/charges are assessed. Credit cards will be verified periodically for sufficient balance to cover the housing security deposit; grades will be withheld if there is an unpaid balance.

Parking

There are parking spaces available for students who need it. Parking fees vary from one building to another. Although parking fees are subject to change, the rates are currently set at a maximum of $150 per month. To request a space, you must submit a completed Parking Request Form online through TWC’s website. Parking is limited and is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis; approval is not guaranteed. If your parking is approved, you will be informed via email approximately one week after your housing assignment has been sent to you.
