Housing & Dining
Housing Costs
Your housing costs cover the rent on your furnished apartment, including utilities and cable TV service. In most cases, you will have to pay extra for Internet and phone service.
On-Campus Housing Requirement in LA
On-campus housing is mandatory for undergraduate students and optional for graduate students. However, if your home is within Los Angeles County and you are interested in living at home with a parent or legal guardian, you can petition to live off campus by completing a Los Angeles Housing Petition Form. Please contact the External Programs Office for a petition form.
Information Sessions
Once students are accepted into the program, they will be required to attend an information session. Information sessions are held in mid-October for spring term attendees and mid-March for fall term participants. Program staff will brief students about what to expect and answer any questions or concerns regarding the program. A packet of important information will be handed out. After the information sessions are over, housing forms will be emailed to students so they can begin the process of room and roommate selection.
Housing Selection
On-campus housing is mandatory for undergraduate students and optional for graduate students. There are no co-ed apartments. You will have an opportunity to request which housing option you prefer when you complete the Los Angeles Housing Form. The forms will be distributed to students after the mandatory information session each term. Taking a proactive approach to finding a roommate may help to avoid roommate conflicts. If two/four of you want to live together, you should write each other’s names on the form.
Those participants who don’t request specific roommates will be assigned roommates. We will do everything possible to assign compatible roommates. However, the best roommates are those who are considerate of others and understand the challenges and benefits of community living.
There are a fixed number of singles (studio apartments), doubles (one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments) and quads (two-bedroom, two bathroom apartments). Bedrooms in doubles and quads are shared. All apartments will be assigned based on seniority (i.e., number of credits completed, then GPA), and housing requests and preferences are not guaranteed. Please follow the instructions below carefully when submitting room and roommate requests:
| Single, or studio apartment | Indicate your choice on the Los Angeles Housing Form. Singles will be assigned based on seniority. If no studios are available, you will be placed in a double or quad. |
|---|---|
| Double, or one-bedroom apartment | Indicate your choice on the Los Angeles Housing Form and supply your roommate’s name if possible. Doubles will be assigned based on seniority. Please be aware that if you request a double without submitting a roommate name, you will be placed in a quad or studio if no other person of the same gender requesting a double is available. If no space in a quad is available and you are placed in a studio, you will be financially responsible for the full studio price. |
| Quad, or two-bedroom apartment | Indicate your choice on the Los Angeles Housing Form along with any roommate requests. Quads will be assigned based on seniority. Please be aware that if no bed is available in a quad, you will be assigned to a double or single room for which you will be fully financially responsible. |
Violations of the Student Code of Conduct and/or any policies outlined in the Housing and Residence Life Handbook are strictly forbidden and will result in disciplinary action and possible dismissal from the Los Angeles Program.
We will not be able to supply you with the address of your student apartment until a few days prior to the check-in date. If addresses are available earlier, we will email this information to you.
Guest Policy
Guests may not stay longer than three days within a seven-day period. THIS POLICY IS STRICTLY ENFORCED.
Your roommate(s) must agree to accommodate guests. You will be held responsible for your guest’s behavior, both in the apartment and in the common areas.
Students who disregard the guest policy will be subject to dismissal from the program.
Pets
As is the case with all Emerson housing, no pets are allowed in any apartments.
Smoking
Smoking is not allowed in any of the Oakwood apartments.
Resident Assistants
The Emerson LA program has three student RAs on site in the spring and fall and two in the summer to help you with issues that do not involve Oakwood facilities management. During the first week to 10 days of the semester, your RA will make a visit to your apartment to say hello.
Fall/Spring On-Campus Housing
Juniors who will be in Boston during the fall or spring semester should participate in the Housing Selection Process. The Office of Housing and Residence Life will contact students who will be enrolled in an external program during that semester regarding fall or spring semester housing options and preferences. View information about on-campus residency requirements for your return semester to the Boston campus. For more information, contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life directly via email at reslife@emerson.edu or by phone at 617-824-8620.
Meals
Other than the complimentary breakfast served every Sunday in Oakwood‘s North Clubhouse, you are responsible for buying groceries and cooking your meals.
