Los Angeles
Facilities & Services
Laundry
Laundry facilities are available on the ground floor of almost every Oakwood building. The machines use a prepaid card system. You will need $5.00 to get started. Washers are $1.75 and dryers are $1.50. You must supply your own detergent.
Most buildings at Oakwood have a mailbox area. If not, your mailbox is in the adjacent building. Larger packages will be dropped off at the concierge in the South Clubhouse.
Storage Facilities
Occasionally, participants may need to store some of their belongings off-site before, during, or after the term. There are many storage facilities in the area, but perhaps the most used is Public Storage. Public Storage has locations in Studio City and Burbank. In addition, you can visit the StorageFront website. A quick search shows that it has more than 329 facilities listed within 16 miles of campus.
Home Services
You can rent most items (for example: linens, iron & ironing board, TV, vacuum, cookware, etc.) for your apartment from Oakwood Home Services for the time you are staying at Oakwood. To rent items, please contact the Oakwood Front Desk, Phone: 1-323-851-3450. Contact Edgar Alvarez or Johnny Bravo if you wish to rent Home Services items. For a complete list of items and prices, you can ask the clubhouse desk or check the prices and items here. If you wish to rent any of the Home Services, contact Edgar or Johnny so you will receive the Emerson discount. Also, many items can be purchased very cheaply in such local stores as IKEA, K-Mart, Target, and other department stores. Rates shown are by month, semester, or package deal. You must pay for the length of your stay when ordering.
We want your stay in Los Angeles to be as stress free as possible. If you have any housing questions, please contact Emerson LA Residence Director Turi Daoust Phone: 818-840-9566
Phone Information
You are responsible for your local phone service. Most students rely on their cell phones for the semester, but service at Oakwood can sometimes be “spotty” because of the hills. If you need a guaranteed phone line that will always have service, landlines are recommended. You can call AT&T at 1-800-PAC-BELL to set up a landline or just a “life-line service” which runs about $10/month. Contact the LA Center once you receive your phone number so that you may be listed in the Student Directory.
Internet Access
For Internet access in your Oakwood apartment, you have four options: Time Warner High Speed Internet Service, Oakwood’s Wireless Hi-Speed Internet Service, AT&T DSL, and dial-up service offered by AT&T. There are pros and cons to all these options.
Time Warner Cable
Time Warner is new to the area and offers a special discount for Emerson students: $29.99 month for Road Runner High Speed Internet service. At present, there are no installation fees and no contract is required. Please contact the Time Warner Cable representative at 310-597-8123 for more information.
Oakwood’s Wireless Service
Each apartment comes with one free access code to the Hi-Speed Wireless Internet Service at Oakwood. This code allows for multiple users, but not at the same time. If more than one person in the apartment needs to connect to the service simultaneously, each must have a separate access code. You can purchase wireless Internet service by computer with a credit card after you move into your apartment, or you can purchase an access code at one of the Oakwood clubhouses. The cost is $30 per code.
If you plan to use wireless Internet service, make certain that any file sharing software on your computer is uninstalled before you sign up. AT&T’s wi-fi toll-free number is 877-929-7678.
DSL
Another high-speed Internet option is DSL through AT&T. DSL works through a regular landline. Setting up a landline will be expensive, and usually one must make a long-term commitment to the service. This is a more expensive option, but very reliable for high-speed service. Multiple users can use DSL simultaneously.
Dial-Up Service
The least expensive option is regular old dial-up service. Dial-up is slow, but it is low cost and reliable. All you need is a landline. View more information.
