MLeague Summer Academy

Course Description

This 3 week course will focus on understanding the history, culture, and emerging business strategies of Chinese media and communication markets.  

Participants will attend lectures given by CUC professors and scholars in their field.  Emerson students will work in partnership with CUC students on a specific project geared towards the student's academic interests and goals.

Fulfills the General Education Global Diversity requirement
Prerequisite: Rising Junior standing

VMA majors may use this course to fulfill one of their two junior and senior level Liberal Arts requirements.

Examination of causes and consequences of globalization viewed from an interdisciplinary perspective. Assesses impact of globalization on economic, political, social, cultural and natural environments of nations, regions, and the world. Focuses on impact and uses of technology and media on cultural production, cultural diversity and multiculturalism, and disparities in power and control among nations and peoples. Investigates regional and cultural differences in human responses to globalization. Past topics include: Women and Global Studies, Global Cities, and Western Perceptions of Africa and Africans. May be repeated for credit if topics differ. 


Students will present their ideas for a project specifically designed to complement their academic goals/interests. The CUC Professor in charge of the course will approve the project.  Chinese professors and fellow CUC students will help guide the project, which can relate to film, music, marketing, communication, architecture, etc. 

Morning lectures will aim to help students understand the transformation of Chinese society from a media and communication perspective.  Afternoon activities will include "field investigation work", which may be related to individual projects.  Students will also visit  some of Beijing's major cultural and historic sites.
