Timothy Edgar's professional career has been devoted to conducting quantitative and qualitative health communication research on topics as diverse as HIV/AIDS, physical activity for adolescents, childhood and adult immunization, diabetes, epilepsy, peptic ulcers, and antibiotic resistance. Before joining the Emerson faculty, Edgar was a senior study director with Westat, a social science research firm in Rockville, Maryland, where he directed dozens of health communication evaluation studies for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While at Westat, Edgar was the lead evaluator for the VERB™ campaign, one of the largest social marketing campaigns ever conducted in the U.S.
Edgar also has taught health communication and research methods at the University of Maryland, the University of Wisconsin, and George Washington University. In his role as Emerson's graduate program director for Health Communication, Edgar also has an appointment as an associate adjunct clinical professor in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Having published widely in professional journals such as the Journal of Health Communication, Health Education Research, Health Communication, and the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Edgar also has contributed to edited volumes such as The Handbook of Health Communication. He co-edited the book AIDS: A Communication Perspective, and recently co-edited a second book about HIV issues, titled Communication Perspectives on HIV/AIDS for the 21st century. Currently, Edgar serves on the editorial boards of Health Communication, Journal of Health Communication¸ and Social Marketing Quarterly.
