Paul Mandelbaum is the author of the novels Garrett in Wedlock (winner of the 2005 Baltimore Book Festival Award for Fiction) and its sequel Adriane on the Edge. Recipient of a James Michener/Copernicus Society Fellowship, his fiction has also appeared in many journals, including Barcelona Review, Glimmer Train, Harvard Review, Massahusetts Review, New England Review, Prairie Schooner, and Southern Review and has won state arts grants from Ohio and California. and The New York Times Magazine.
His journalism has appeared in Baltimore Magazine, Commonweal, Johns Hopkins Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine, as well as The Los Angeles Review of Books, where he serves as a contributing editor and recently published a critical overview of contemporary Romanian authors. His profile of filmmaker John Waters won a Penney-Missouri Reporting Award, his coverage of sexual abuse by priests won a National City and Regional Magazine Award for Investigative Reporting, and his exploration of South Asian dowry violence has been reprinted in anthropology and global studies textbooks.
Paul has also edited two literary anthologies—First Words: Earliest Writing from Favorite Contemporary Authors and 12 Short Stories and Their Making. Since 1997, he has taught Emerson L.A.'s course in the literature of Los Angeles. He is also an internship faculty member and recent co-creator of the Emerson Los Angeles Summer Workshop in Magazine Publishing.
