Maria Stenzel is a freelance multimedia journalist who covered the environment, science, and indigenous cultures for National Geographic Magazine for twenty years (1991 - 2011). Her photographic essays have received awards from World Press Photo, The National Magazine Award, the National Press Photographers Association, and Communication Arts.

From 2011-2012 she spent an academic year studying at MIT and Harvard as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow. At the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University she is filming oral histories with individuals who lived through school desegregation in the 1960s. She also teaches Environmental Photojournalism in the Journalism Program at the Harvard University Extension School.
