Claudia Castañeda's teaching and research lie in the area of interdisciplinary studies, working at the intersection of feminist, queer, cultural, and science and technology studies, among other fields. She is committed to developing pedagogical approaches that inspire students to engage with new ideas and skills, and connect academic inquiry to the worlds they encounter.
Claudia did her graduate work in the History of Consciousness Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has held positions at universities in the UK and the US, including Lancaster University (UK), Boston University, Wellesley College, Harvard University, and Suffolk University.
Her publications include Figurations: Child, Bodies, Worlds (Duke University Press, 2002), which considers at the child-body in transnational circuits of exchange from nineteenth-century science to twentieth-century organ stealing rumors and international adoption; "The Future of Touch," in Thinking Through the Skin, (Routledge, 2001) a critical essay on sensory embodiment and robotics; and "The Child as a Feminist Figuration: Toward a Politics of Privilege" (Feminist Theory, 2001). Her current project focuses on the medical/psychological fashioning of transgender children as it relates to their own self-fashioning.
Research topics: queer embodiment, the body in trans-national circuits of exchange, technologies of the body, the materialization of power, privilege and inequality.
