Bright Lights: From Book to Screen and Back again with Semel Screenwriting Chair Rafael Yglesias

Award-winning author and screenwriter Rafael Yglesias confesses how he became a writer and survived working with great directors such as Peter Weir and Roman Polanski.
Rafael Yglesias finished his first novel on his 16th birthday. Doubleday published it the following year in 1972. In his 40-year career he has had nine novels published and five screenplays produced. In 1992, he adapted his seventh novel, Fearless, to the screen. Peter Weir directed, Jeff Bridges, and Rosie Perez starred in the film. Other adaptations to the screen were Death and the Maiden, Les Miserables, From Hell, and Dark Water. They were directed by Roman Polanski, Bille August, the Hughes Brothers and Walter Salles. Those films starred Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, Uma Thurman, Claire Danes, Johnny Depp, and Jennifer Connelly. His latest novel, A Happy Marriage, won the 2009 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction. His tenth novel, The Wisdom of Perversity, will be published next year.
