Prof. Kolodzy brings more than two decades of professional journalism experience in print and broadcast news to her teaching of convergence-oriented and broadcast journalism courses at Emerson. She uses her study of innovative approaches to the practice of journalism to infuse her teaching with relevance and dynamism.
Before coming to Emerson in 1998, Prof. Kolodzy had been a reporter, writer, and producer, including serving as Senior Writer/Editor at CNN International, Senior Producer at CNN World Report, and Assistant State Editor at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She was a University of Michigan Journalism Fellow in 1990-91, concentrating her study on Eastern European history, politics, and culture. In 1999, she spent a summer working at CNN.com.
At Emerson, Kolodzy developed a specialized interest in the area of convergence and multimedia in the practice of 21st Century journalism. She is a regular presenter at the annual "Convergence and Society" conferences by the University of South Carolina and has spoken about convergence journalism on numerous panels at the Broadcast Education Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conventions.
Kolodzy is the author of two texts on convergence journalism. The latest, "Practicing Convergence Journalism," was published by Routledge in August. Her first book, "Convergence Journalism: Writing and Reporting across the News Media," was published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2006 and addressed the changing mindset and skill set needed in the news industry today.
She was one of two faculty members to accompany 33 Emerson students in the summer of 2008 to Beijing, China, where the students served as media volunteers for the Olympic Games. She has also worked to develop and initiate the Emerson College High School Institute for Journalism at Emerson.
