SOWA First Friday Visit
Lujia Chen
November 20, 2012
Emerson College Integrated Marketing Communication graduate student Lujia Chen describes a recent trip to SOWA's First Friday event in Boston:
"Communication Studies Scholar-in-Residence Cathryn Edelstein invited us to join her on the rainy evening of November 2, 2012 at SOWA’s First Friday. This was an amazing art experience. SOWA First Friday is an open studio event held by the SOWA Artists Guild, a nonprofit association of professional studio artists. Almost 60 artists open their studio doors to the public on the first Friday of each month.
Entering the door of each studio is like entering a new world. Artists not only show their work, but also demonstrate their understanding of the world.

In one particular studio, Brian Murphy, an artist who uses iron wire to produce artwork, impressed me. Each piece of sculptured work had its own story. The art, exhibited with a white background and yellow lights shining upon them, created a dreamland. Also on display were a lot of pretty necklaces and earrings made of wire.
Many in our group were excited to purchase these creative accessories. "This artist does a good job relating his art to our lives,” said Rebecca Li, a graduate student in our group. I couldn’t have agreed more. Murphy was friendly and welcoming as he explained how he creates his art by hand."
