Procedure for Evaluation of Academic Deans

The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) shall initiate a five-year review of each Academic Dean at the appropriate time. This review shall extend beyond the regular annual evaluation filed with the Human Resources Department. The VPAA shall establish an independent committee composed of one elected, tenured faculty member from each department that reports to the Academic Dean; one tenured faculty member from a department outside of the unit that the Academic Dean leads; and one administrator. The faculty members shall be elected by each represented department. The faculty member from a unit outside of the Dean’s report shall be appointed by the VPAA, as will the administrator on the committee. The Chair of the committee shall be appointed by the VPAA and shall be a tenured, full professor from a department reporting to the Dean.

The committee shall solicit input from the full time faculty of the various departments that report to the Academic Dean using a prescribed informational form which inquires about an individual faculty member’s perception of the work of the dean in the various categories of duties for which the dean is responsible. Upon receiving feedback from the faculty, the committee will prepare a narrative summarizing the feedback and shall present the written narrative to the Vice President for Academic Affairs within a time agreed upon by the VPAA and the committee.

All of the work of the committee shall remain confidential.

The VPAA shall also solicit input from administrators with whom the Dean works on behalf of his/her unit.

After the process is completed, the VPAA will issue a statement regarding the evaluation.

Online Course Evaluations

Each semester Emerson College requests that all students complete a course evaluation for each of their courses. This allows students to provide valuable feedback to the faculty and to the College.

Student participation in semester evaluations is very important: the faculty learn a great deal about themselves and the content and organization of their courses and the College uses the information to assist in making personnel and curricular decisions. The on-line evaluation is REQUIRED and completely CONFIDENTIAL so students can take the time to give the faculty and the administration thoughtful and constructive feedback.

To access the on-line course evaluation form:

  1. Log-on to: Interactive Services and click on the "Course and Teacher Evaluation Survey" option on the menu.
  2. Each student will see a list of his/her courses that need to be evaluated and the student must evaluate all listed courses in order to complete the process and be allowed to view grades.

Students will be able to access the evaluation system 24 hours a day once they are posted. Online course evaluation forms will be available for students to fill out upon notification near the end of the semester.
