Rafael Jaen has been designing costumes for over 25 years. He is a member of the prestigious United Scenic Artist (USA) Chapter 829. His recent theatre works include Boston Lyric Stage's Nicholas Nickleby and Kiss me Kate and Beaujest Theatre's The Remarkable Rooming House of Madame LeMonde at the 2009 Tennessee Williams Provincetown Festival. Jaen has received Hubbie Awards for his costume work and additionally, he has been nominated for IRNE Awards and Elliot Norton Awards for Best Costume Design.
His recent film credits include costumes for the PBS American Experience series God in America, Fall, 2010. Jaen is Vice-Chair of Student Leadership Initiatives at the United States Institute for Theater Technology (USITT), and he is the National Design, Technologies, and Management vice-chair for the Kennedy Center American Theatre College (KCACTF), representing colleges in eight geographical regions in the USA. He is also a member of the National Association of Photoshop Practicioners (NAPP).
Jaen's work has been featured in full-page articles in The Boston Globe, Boston Herald, and such national publications as Theatre Design & Technology, LIVE DESIGN, and USITT's Sightlines.
Jaen is the recipient of an Outstanding Teacher Artist certificate for KCACTF, Region 1, and of a USITT grant for Modern Tailoring Techniques for Men's Period Costumes. Jaen is the author of two books: Developing and Maintaining a Design-Tech Portfolio (Focal Press, 2006) and SHOWCASE (Focal Press 2011).
