Maruta Vitols

Maruta Z. Vitols is a media historian, specializing in political documentary. Her present research interests center on cyberactivism, and the use of new media for political and social change.

Vitols has published articles on art and ideology, and her latest study of the relationships between Latvian documentaries and politics appears in A Companion to Eastern European Cinemas (ed. Anikó Imre, Wiley-Blackwell, 2012). Her essay on how filmmaker Laila Pakalnina's work The Bus negotiates identity construction in the liminal space of post-communist Europe will appear in the anthology Border Visions: Identity and Diaspora in Film (Scarecrow Press, 2013).

Dr. Vitols is also a Fulbright scholar, and is a Visiting Lecturer at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering during the 2012-2013 academic year.
