Connecting to your Cabinet Folder

Cabinet is a networked storage space available to all Emerson faculty and staff members. It allows you to save your work documents on the network, protecting them in case of computer failure. If the Help Desk needs to wipe your computer, all your data is still accessible. You can also use it to share departmental files between coworkers.

  • Because Cabinet is a network drive, you can always get to your files in your Cabinet folder from another computer on campus if you experience difficulties with your computer.
  • Cabinet is backed up regularly, so even if Cabinet malfunctioned, your data would be recovered.
  • Cabinet is secure; only you can copy files to your Cabinet folder, and only members of your department can save data in your departmental Cabinet folders.
  • Cabinet is cross-platform, so you’ll be able to back up and access your files from either Macintosh or Windows computers.
  • Cabinet is easy to use. Drag and drop. It’s that simple.
  • Cabinet can be accessed from off campus through the College’s VPN connection. If your files are on Cabinet, you can access them from anywhere in the world.

Each department's Cabinet folder has several subdivisions, with various levels of access. Inside each department you will find the following folders:

  • Staff & Faculty, which contains each staff and/or faculty member's personal Cabinet folder. These folders are only available to those individuals.
  • Internal, which is for shared files for the department, and only accessible to members of that department.
  • Public, which is for files you want to share with other departments.

Connecting to Cabinet with Windows

If you're using your office computer, chances are you already have a shortcut to your Cabinet folder on your desktop. This happens automatically when you log in. If you don't have one, getting it is easy!

  1. Download the "helpdesk-windows-cabinet-setup.vbs" script
Right-click and "Save As" to download the file to your computer
  2. Double-click the downloaded helpdesk-windows-cabinet-setup.vbs to run it; you may see a security warning at this point. Click Open to continue; the file is safe.
  3. After a moment, a folder icon called "My Cabinet Folder" will appear on your desktop.

Accessing Departmental Files

Getting to your department's Internal folder is easy too.

  1. Open a "My Computer" window
  2. In the address bar, simply type \\cabinet
  3. Double-click on "Departments" and then double-click again on your department name
  4. From here, you can choose either the Internal or Public folder

Connecting to Cabinet with Windows

To create a shortcut, right-click on the folder you'd like a shortcut to, and choose "Create Shortcut." Windows will be unable to create the shortcut in that folder, and will offer to place it on your desktop instead.

Connecting to Cabinet with OS X

Your office Mac will not by default have shortcuts to your Cabinet folders, but it's easy enough to get them there!

  1. Download the helpdesk-mac-cabinet-setup.dmg disk image
Please note: The above script will not run if you're using 10.7 Lion. But you can easily create a manual shortcut.
  2. On newer computers, the downloaded disk image may mount automatically; if it does not, double-click the .dmg file to mount it
  3. Double-click the "My Cabinet Folder" script inside the disk image
  4. When prompted, enter your ECnet username
  5. After a moment, a folder icon called "My Cabinet Folder" will appear on your desktop
  6. Eject the disk image, and you can now delete the .dmg file as well

Accessing Departmental Files

Just like with Windows, we'll need to connect to the Cabinet server manually to reach folders other than our own.

  1. Open a Finder window, to make sure that the Finder application is selected
  2. Click on the Go menu at the top of the screen, and then click Connect to Server
  3. In the box, type smb://cabinet.emerson.edu; click on the plus sign to add this to your favorite servers for next time
  4. If you are prompted for your ECnet username and password, enter them
  5. You will then be prompted for which "Share" to mount; choose "Departments"
  6. Double-click on your department's name in the list
  7. From here, you can choose either the Internal or Public folder

Creating a shortcut to Cabinet with OS X

To create a shortcut, click and hold on the folder you'd like a shortcut to, and drag that folder to your left Places bar. Drop it between two existing items in that list.

Make sure not to drop it on top of another item, as you'll start copying the folder contents into that folder!

Another way to do this is: click and hold on the folder icon at the top of the window and drag it to your desktop. Before you let go, hold down both the Command and Option keys on your keyboard. This will create an alias to the folder on your desktop. Make sure to hold both those keys down to avoid copying the folder contents to your computer!
