Diversity Council

Emerson College has long been committed to creating an educational environment that both reflects and respects diversity in order to enhance the learning experience of our students. Both the current and previous strategic plans for the College establish increasing the diversity of our student body, curriculum, and overall learning environment as major institutional priorities.

In 2007, a strategic plan was developed that focused exclusively on diversity. Its mission was to identify specific steps that can and should be taken to increase racial and ethnic diversity throughout the institution.

In 2008, Emerson’s Diversity Council was set up to review the College’s progress in attaining diversity goals set forth in the plan. The council is made up of staff members appointed annually by the College’s president.

The purpose of the council is to:

  • Set annual goals and priorities based on Emerson's diversity plan;
  • Be informed by data from previous reports and surveys;
  • Monitor the collection of data to chart progress made on the meeting of diversity goals;
  • Foster collaboration and coordination between the various initiatives (e.g., PRISM, the Alumni Association, the Parents Leadership Council);
  • Be responsible for updating and keeping the Diversity Plan current;
  • Issue an annual report to the College community;
  • Sponsor an open campus forum each year to discuss progress and continuing issues.
